Fandom: THE DEAD ZONE Pairing: None Author on LJ: ruralstarAuthor Website: Ruralstar's ZoneWhy this must be read: With all the darkness that the future can bring, it's nice to focus on the human side of things. In this fic, Johnny tries to reconnect with life and the people in Cleaves Mills by finding a lost engagement ring. But nothing is ever that simple when his visions are involved. The Ring is a quiet story with a touching message. ( Excerpt ) The Ring

This is the last of the Dead Zone recs for this month. I hope everyone enjoyed them, and that they increased interest in the fandom. For more fic, check out deadzonefic, the DZ Fic & Vid Masterlist, and the Dead Zone Photo Challenge (challenge signups end today!). Thanks for reading! Fandom: THE DEAD ZONE Pairing: None Author on LJ: Unknown Author Website: Fanfiction.Net ProfileWhy this must be read: Johnny's house is serving as temporary storage for donations for the Faith Heritage Alliance, and one item in particular is having a strange effect on him. He's been having strange and haunting nightmares, and now horrific visions of betrayal and violence by his closest friends. The deeper he digs for the truth, the greater the danger becomes, but something inside him won't let go... ( Excerpt ) Dybbuk

Fandom: X-MEN COMICVERSE Pairing: Bobby/Jean-Paul (Iceman/Northstar of Alpha Flight) Author on LJ: khirsahAuthor Website: It was Nocturne (that doesn't seem to be working now) Why this must be read:This Uncanny X-Men/X-Men story is my Halloween-themed rec, and it's a fun take on how two lonely guys come together. I think this pairing is adorable, so I just wish more people would write it. (I didn't consider this a crossover rec because it takes place in the X-Men verse, and Jean-Paul's appearance is canon.) Fandom: DUE SOUTH Pairing: Fraser/Kowalski Author on LJ: glossingAuthor Website: glossingsWhy this must be read:Many a dS fan has wondered, "what if?" about the quest for the Hand of Franklin--and many a story has been written about their journey. I adore many of the fandom classics, but I wanted to point out this newer post-CotW story. This long story about how Ray and Fraser take their relationship to another level is leisurely, contemplative, and satisfying. Glossing's RayK voice is good, and Fraser is also present in all his mysterious, Fraserish glory (Fraser's declaration of love is perfectly weird, totally in character). Because everything was different and backwards and perfect up here. Ray had never been *opposed* to the idea of guys; it was just that, like the idea of other women, it was purely hypothetical during the Era of the Stella. Before her, he'd been more interested in Rock 'Em Sock 'Em Robots than touching, and after her, he'd given it a try a couple times, but *nothing* lasted very long in the Aftermath besides the turtle. Well, it’s been a trip, driving the van this past month, and I hope that I haven’t made too many faux pas. I’ve had fun and I certainly hope to do it again sometime. Now, on to the important stuff… Fandom: Farscape Pairing: not so much, as this fic is Noranti’s, but in a pinch, I’d say John/Aeryn Author on LJ: gigerisgodAuthor website: none known Why this must be read:One of the things I like best about the Farscape fandom is the willingness and the sheer ability of the writers involved to write intriguing, thought-provoking fic about the secondary characters, not just about John and Aeryn. This fic is a wonderful character introspection focusing on Noranti, and shows us John (and everyone else, to a lesser extent) through her eyes. Noranti is definitely a character about whom I would have loved to learn more within canon – her motivations and history, what makes her tick. Since we didn’t get much from canon, the author here has provided a good deal of insight into Grandma, and as far as I can tell it fits seamlessly with canon for the show. It gives me some of what I wanted and helps to understand her, especially in regard to John Crichton: Noranti relished the rare opportunities she had to offer her skills to Crichton as listener, advisor, and friend. There was something special about friendship with a man; something she found she’s missed over the cycles. Sadly, the men in her life that kindled her passions and won her heart are a thing of the past and there’s a distinct ache she feels in her bones when she thinks on it too long. Her Crichton is undoubtedly young and handsome, and it tickles her desire just to be near him, but she doesn’t entertain any illusions about the man. He’s fond of her for her uncomplicated presence in his life, but his love is reserved for one woman.Spoilers for Terra Firma and Twice Shy... Go. Read. And, as always, if you’re so moved, leave the author a little feedback. :) Supply and Demand- Mood: sad

Fandom: LOTR Pairing: n/a Author on LJ: nickeybAuthor Website: see her LJ memories, above Why this must be read:A wonderful fic that offers a fascinatingly creepy look at the undercurrents of placid life in the Shire, perfect for a Hallowe'en rec. Nickey draws on Bradbury's Something Wicked This Way Comes to excellent effect. Freak Show( Special Hallowe'en bonus rec! )And with that, I'm dropping off the keys for the next driver. ::waves:: Happy Hallowe'en, all!

Fandom: STARGATE SG-1 Pairing: Jack/Daniel Author on LJ: thegrrrl2002Author Website: hereWhy this must be read:Fabulously gratuitous smut. In which The Grrrl finds my drunk Daniel kink, and then fondles it a little. Happy Halloween. "Huh?" Not that Daniel makes sense all the time as it is, but I no idea what he was talking about. I wondered just how many teeny empty bottles of tequila were sitting on his night stand.

Fandom: STAR TREK: THE ORIGINAL SERIES Pairing: Sulu/Chekov Author on LJ: cimness Author Website: cimorene's sordid fancyWhy this must be read: Because it has teeny, tiny candy characters. And the words suicidal spearmint. And Uhura being her usual kick-ass self. It's a funny, sweet and lovely story and it has Chekov and Sulu as actual characters. Yay! Uhura has to watch over tiny, animated candy versions of the crew and discovers something about the life-sized versions of the crew. Fandom: BLAKE'S 7 Pairing: none Author on LJ: sallymn Author Website: none, but many of Sally's stories are on the Hermit Library Why this must be read:
I really want to rec Sally's beautiful and haunting (in both senses) A Christmas Canto but it's no on line yet. So I decided to go for something light and fun for my last rec of the month.
This is an AU branching off at the very beginning of season 3 in Power Play, and I do wish it had happened this way. Vila didn't understand anything that had happened since Star One. He'd crashed on this godforsaken hole, he'd called for help, he'd called and called and -
Well, the two girls who'd found him and brought him here to the safety of this ship were prettier than Avon, so he supposed that they were all right. The man however - the man they called the Captain, dressed in black, with the curls and bright eyes and blinding number of teeth when he smiled - he wasn't at all sure of. No, it's not who you think. Go and enjoy a bit of fun with an sharp edge. Power Glitch

Fandom: ONCE UPON A TIME IN MEXICO Pairing: none Author on LJ: vanillafluffyAuthor Website: fanfiction.net profileWhy this must be read: Vanillafluffy continues her love of expanding on minor characters in this suspenseful ghost story. Campa is one of El Mariachi's mariachi friends from Desperado. Unfortunately he doesn't survive that movie, and in this story he finds himself a ghost just following his final shootout. What is your purpose in "life" if you're a ghost? Campa finds himself attached to a diminutive thief, a young girl, who needs his help and may be able to help him. All without knowing he exists. Happy Hallowe'en! The Road From Santa CeceliaThis is Mojave Dragonfly signing off of driving the van for a small fandom. Thanks, y'all! P.S. Email me if you'd like recs of some great WIPs in this fandom. Mojavedragonfly at cox dot net.

Fandom: FIREFLY Pairing: none Author on LJ: unknown Author Website: KMSpider's LairWhy this must be read:This is a soothing and amusing pick-me-up fic about the quieter times on Serenity. There is Simon, sewing and nice family-like crew moments. In Stitches

Fandom: OZ Pairing: Beecher/Keller Author on LJ: N/A Author Website: Author Page on Cellblock 5Why this must be read:Simply because this is the funniest alternate universe ever created for the Oz boys. The writing is witty, sharp and quick, and the image of Toby as a camp queen is to die for. This was just the first in a hilarious series (there's also Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's fics), but it can be read as a stand alone. O'Reily also makes an appearance, and it's worth the read just for his Halloween costume, which made me snicker like mad the first time I read this. Happy HalloweenAnd with that, I sign off as the Oz Crack Van recc'er. Happy Halloween, guys! :)

Dear loyal crack_van readers: I am so, so sorry for my general absence this month. Real life came up and bit me on the butt. Saturdays in the lab, etc. But I figure there's a couple of hours til midnight, so I can get a few stories in. Fandom: STARGATE: ATLANTIS/STAR TREK TOS Pairing: McKay/Sheppard Author on LJ: amirealAuthor Website: http://www.amireal.comWhy this must be read:This is the story I would totally have posted for Crossover Wednesday if I'd been on top of things (and it had been posted *cough*). amireal has been teasing me with bits of this for weeks, and it's hilarious. Sheppard and McKay find themselves in another universe. Which they recognize. From TV. But wait, there's more! In addition to the crack (competitive geekiness, borrowed uniforms, clashing physical laws...), there's also emotional depth. McKay and Sheppard bring along all their baggage from the season one finale/season two premiere, and the Enterprise crew supplies the Saurian brandy. Fandom: STARGATE: ATLANTIS Pairing: McKay/Sheppard, Beckett/McKay/Sheppard Author on LJ: zortifiedAuthor Website: http://gila.fakingsanity.net/Why this must be read:The city of Atlantis becomes a character in its own right in many stories in this fandom, but most writers make Sheppard her favorite. This story remembers that Beckett has the ATA gene, too. Atlantis co-opts him as its caretaker, and in growing into that role, he becomes more and more isolated from the rest of the Terran crew--until McKay and Sheppard refuse to let him remain alone.
