01:26 am Speak Like A Child by Carondelet11 (PG)
Fandom: THE WEST WING
Pairing: Toby, gen.
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] carondelet11
Author Website: N/A
Why this must be read:

This story is ... different. In a good way. It's written in the second person, addressing Toby, and quite unlike anything I've ever read in fanfiction. It is, I suppose, Toby ruminating on himself, on what makes him happy, or more pertinently, what does not. (After, possibly, a certain conversation in 4.22 'Commencement'.) I've read it three times now and it is still powerful enough that I find myself wanting to read it again, because I don't yet feel as though I've taken its full measure. Highly recommended.

You didn’t lose it; you were what was lost.

01:41 am Five Times Your Wished You Were That Other Guy by Oro (PG13)
Fandom: THE WEST WING
Pairing: Josh, gen (mostly)
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] warlordkittens
Author Website: Winged Words
Why this must be read:

I'm not usually much of a Josh-person, but this story is so beautifully realised, so poignant and so perfectly Josh that none of my character prejudices matter at all. These are five things that never did happen to Josh, but your heart aches for him just the same.

Gabe passes him the joint and it feels like an Ave Maria.

01:49 am A Whole New World by Jamjar (R)
Fandom: DC COMICS
Pairing: Wally West/Kyle Rayner (Flash III/Green Lantern V), Wally West/Linda Park
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] jamjar
Author Website: Author's LJ memories
Why this must be read:

I don't usually read Everyone is Gay! stories; they tend to stretch my personal plausibility boundaries that bit too far. However, this particular variation on the theme is not only plausible, but almost likely – the setup here makes as much sense as anything else in the DCU (and quite possibly more sense than most of it).

It's certainly a new and entertaining twist on an old cliché, and there's plenty of bitching and snark thrown into the bargain. The story also provides some welcome relief to those of us fixing for that which is all too rare: comicsverse Wally fic.

Keep an eye out for the cameo appearances by Piper and Linda – they're a lot of fun, and it's always nice to see several rarely-written characters getting some love.

01:52 am Twisted Reality... by Kaye (PG)
Fandom: STARSKY & HUTCH
Pairings: Starsky & Hutch & Paul Michael Glaser & David Soul (gen)
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] peg22
Author Website: Me & Thee Archive
Why this must be read:

Genre shows, like Star Trek or Xena, are no stranger to fics that employ this particular convention, but programs with a comparatively more...mundane focus, like Starsky & Hutch, *are*, which is why when someone finally does take this approach, it turns out to be surprisingly fun. In this story, Kaye dares to imagine just what might happen if Starsky & Hutch were ever to meet The Actors Who Play Them on Television. The curious dynamics amongst the newly-created pairings are a treat to watch play out, and the author includes numerous subtle nods to fans who know even the slightest bit about the actors' lives (which, in this fandom, is difficult *not* to do). It's fun, it's funny, and it sometimes makes you wonder just what the hell is going on, which, I think, is well within the rights of an RPF-AU story ;) Really, it's a tribute to four very special men who were and continue to be the impetus to so much imagining for the past 30 years and counting. All in all, a read that simply makes me smile.

08:36 am A Hacker's Tale by Madeleine Partous (R - for language)
Fandom: X-FILES
Pairing: Mulder/Scully (eventually)
Author on LJ: none
Author Website: none
Why this must be read: Madeleine is a bit of a legend for those of us who started pretty early in the X-Files fandom. An absolutely fabulous writer, and funny and lovely to boot. That aside, she also wrote some of the great observational pieces about the Mulder and Scully relationship. In this case, Frohike is caught in the middle of something he fails to understand until it is much, much too late.

02:10 pm Blow the Candles Out by Syal (R)
Fandom: HOUSE
Pairing: House/Wilson
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] bethfrish
Author Website: Thirty Silver
Why this must be read: This is a story about the end of a marriage, and that should be, you would think, nothing but bitterness and despair. There is a fair bit of that, but there's also House being Wilson's best friend, and that is a lovely, lovely thing.

02:39 pm Sand by Vera (NC-17)
Fandom: The Sentinel
Pairing: Jim/Blair
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] copracat
Author Website: Vera's Page

Why this must be read:
I love AUs, and there are some wonderful examples of it in this fandom. "Sand" is one of my all-time favorites. Blair is a businessman facing a difficult decision who drives out to the beach to get away from his problems for an afternoon. Jim is the surfer he meets there, something of mystery man. This piece is wonderfully atmospheric. You'll feel like you're at the beach. There's hot, hot stranger sex, but still that sense of connection between Jim and Blair that you want in a Sentinel story, that makes it a Sentinel story.

Go read and leave the author some love:

03:47 pm Five Fraks That May or May Not Have Happened to Helo by sabaceanbabe (R)
Fandom: BATTLESTAR GALACTICA 2003
Pairing: Helo/various
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] sabaceanbabe
Author Website: http://www.livejournal.com/users/sabaceanbabe/
Why this must be read: The "Five Things" formula can make for some great fanfic and here's another example. It's the way in which [livejournal.com profile] sabaceanbabe pulls together and makes you believe in some rather unexpected match-ups for Helo that make this story stand out. She also uses these events to build up more of a backstory for Helo, a secondary character in the series who's risen to prominence over the two seasons to date.

04:39 pm First Do No Harm trilogy by Nostalgia (PG to PG-13)
Fandom: STAR TREK: DEEP SPACE NINE
Pairing: Bashir/Ezri, Garak/Bashir
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] nostalgia_lj
Author Website: Nostalgia for an age yet to come
Why this must be read:

Three short pieces which outline a possible path for Julian Bashir after What You Leave Behind. Like much of Nostalgia's writing, the prose is spare, even terse, and Nostalgia cleverly leads the reader to construct their own version of the story which lies between the lines. I particularly enjoyed the spot-on voice for Garak in 'An Apple A Day', probably the strongest of the three. Biologists amongst us might have to close our eyes once a twice, but that's an endearing trait of much Trek canon.

10:02 pm terra firma by Sin (R?)
Fandom: STARGATE ATLANTIS
Pairing: McKay/Sheppard
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] sinden
Author Website: The Dreaming
Why this must be read: There have been many stories set between the season 2 episodes The Siege III and Intruder, but I've got mad love for this one. I love the characterization and the interaction between John and Rodney, snark and lots of loving :-).
