02:08 am Another Dawn Patrol by Jat Sapphire (NC-17)
Fandom: STARSKY & HUTCH
Pairing: Starsky/Hutch
Author on LJ: Unknown
Author Website: Jat_Sapphire's Story Pages
Why this must be read:

In our show, Starsky wonders "what if" they'd had different names?
Well, how 'bout we ask another "what if" question? A BIG one?

Stop.

No, listen. Come back.

I know, I know. It's an AU. And, I know, AUs can be scary sometimes. Lord knows I'm not their biggest fan. But, seriously? This one's a gem. Jat's a brilliant enough writer that she could probably make me invest my time and emotion into Starsky and Hutch as a pair of gay trout (although I'd really rather she not try), so believably setting them up as a couple of WWI fighter pilots is a cakewalk. She describes the story (first published in the all-AU SH zine Timeless) as a remix of the old Errol Flynn film The Dawn Patrol, but you don't have to know anything about that movie to fall in love with the story she tells. It's grand, and epic, and makes you viscerally ache for the boys, for them being them, for being what they are, for being in love and stuck in the middle of a war. It made me laugh, and it made me cry, and when it was over I didn't *want* it to be over - which is enough for me to add it to my own personal favorites list. I think it could do the same for you.

Maps to the Stars' Homes by Liz Barr
Fandom: HARRY POTTER
Pairing: None (This is gen, but the 'ships established in HBP are implied.)
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] lizbee
Author Website: mirrorDance

Why this must be read:
This is an interesting post-war story that lets events unfold in a nonlinear way. Harry goes awandering, while he deals with his past, which would be a cliche in less deft hands. There's also the well-worn plot device of the Trio taking matters into their own hands, but that makes complete sense to me knowing what we do of their personalities, and Liz adds details that make this a fresh tale. I like the appearances by Luna, Neville, and Mrs. Longbottom especially.

07:36 am Casting Shadows by Northlight (R)
Fandom: HARRY POTTER
Pairing: Tom Riddle's Parents
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] anenko
Author Website: Northlight's Fics

Why this must be read:
This dark story gives a credible background as to the origins of Tom Riddle's personality. (Although I don't believe genetics are inescapable, I do think the origins of personality are in one's genes, and it's one's life experiences that twist those traits this way or that.) Northlight made me believe that this was the story of Riddle's parents, so for me this is canon. There's just enough detail that the character of Tom's (nameless) mother feels so real, and the society she comes from makes sense, too.

Why this must be read:

Two for Leo, and for John, and all those who loved them.

If I think it's going to start to rain I'll turn my collar up, which my wife used to say made me look like a gangster from the thirties.

08:45 am A Cup of Joe and Leo by Abigale (PG)
Fandom: THE WEST WING
Pairing: Leo and Sam, friendship.
Author on LJ: Not known
Author Website: Subtractions
Why this must be read:

A second rec for Leo and John. We'll miss you both so much.

"I'm saying, you don't put a Starbucks across the street from an elementary school," Sam continued arguing. "We don't let dealers sell drugs within one thousand yards of one -- "

05:25 pm Her God Normal by Summers (PG)
Fandom: BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER
Pairing: Buffy/Angel, Buffy/Riley, Buffy/Xander
Author on LJ: unknown
Author Website: unknown
Why this must be read:

This ficlet is set in around early Season 5, about Buffy's struggle to be normal and how the people in her life could, should, and don't play into that search. There are several pairings discussed in this fic, but I think this is more a Buffy character piece than about the pairings.

Excerpt: She knows all about Normal. After all, she was Normal once, long ago, when it wasn’t a capitalized deity.

05:38 pm Mirror by uberaeryn (NC-17)
Fandom: LOST
Pairing: Jack/Sawyer and Sun/Jin
Author on LJ: [profile] uberaeryn
Author Website: unknown
Why this must be read:[profile] uberaeryn is known in this fandom and for good reason. She is able to bring forth the unique voice of each character and is skilled at both comedy and drama. Mirror is the latter. It is a lovely fic in which we see Jack and Sawyer, through Sun's eyes, as they reflect her own relationship with Jin. This wonderfully well written. The kind of fic that makes you think the author might know these characters better than the people who created them. Enjoy. Mirror

06:59 pm Asclepius' Daughter by widget285 (G)
Fandom: BATTLESTAR GALACTICA 2003
Pairing: Lee/Ishay (very mildly)
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] widget285
Author Website: The Widgeteria
Why this must be read: I can't recommend this story highly enough: a character you see for just minutes in a few episodes becomes the emotional anchor in this short story that pulls no punches in what is already a dark universe. Ishay's the medic who tends Adama Sr. after the events at the end of season one: through her weary eyes we see the life of sickbay and the hope of a son for his father. Despite the dark elements, it's a profoundly hopeful, human story. Go, go: read now!

07:30 pm Martyr by Georgina (NC17)
Fandom: POPSLASH
Pairing: AJ/Nick, AJ/Brian, other pairings
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] eponymous
Author Website: juppy.org
Why this must be read: I love the way Georgina writes the Boys in this story. Their relationships are real and messy, and the way they interact to each other is well-done. Brian discovers what AJ is doing for the group. Things are complicated but ultimately sweet.

"Holy fuck," Kevin says one day, backing out of the bathroom on the bus. Brian looks up from his book in time to see Nick stumbling out after him, catching desperately at Kevin's clothes.
"Kevin, Kevin, wait."
"What're you," Kevin growls, pushing him away. "The fuck?"
Brian notices the flush on Nick's cheeks then, the glaze in his eyes, and figures Kevin walked in on Nick masturbating. Five horny guys, small bus, no big deal. Well, four horny guys and Brian, who never does that on the bus and only in the privacy of his carefully-locked hotel room, but, yeah. He's about to come to Nick's defence when AJ swings into view, pulling his shirt down over an erection that even his oldest pair of jeans can't hide.
Brian chokes on his words.

11:37 pm Sacred Space by Justine (NC-17)
Fandom: The Sentinel
Pairing: Jim/Blair
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] sanj
Author Website: N/A

Why this must be read:
This story is set after Dead Drop, and is a wonderfully poignant look at how Sentinel and Guide reconnect after the threat is over. It has a spot-on Blair voice, with a real sense of him as an anthropologist. As I've mentioned before, I love stories where the path from straight man to being in a committed homosexual relationship isn't automatic, and "Sacred Space" does a great job of exploring the redefinition of identity. I think what I love most is how believably vulnerable Jim is in this. A beautiful and touching story.

Go read and give the author some love:
