12:08 am Denial by Pun (R)
Fandom: HOUSE
Pairing: House/Wilson
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] pun
Author's website: Movies in my Head
Why this must be read:

In "Three Stories" - to my mind one of the most brilliantly constructed episodes of any tv-series, ever - House more or less in passing tells the students he's lecturing to about a standing bet he has with a buddy of his. Whenever said buddy gives a patient the news that they are dying, and the patient ends up *thanking* him for it, House pays him ten dollars. It isn't stated in so many words, but of course there's no doubt that this buddy is Wilson.

Pun has taken this standing bet as the starting point for her story Denial. On the surface, she does the rather obvious thing and uses the payment of the bet and the emotional vulnerability brought on by dying patients to get House and Wilson into bed with each other. But Pun is a smart lady, and her fic is far from that simple. It gives us a glimpse of the endless sensitivity and complete callousness of a man both willing to enter into such a bet and able to win it, and it points out to us, as well as to House, how very dangerous Wilson is, despite, or perhaps because of, his artless puppy-dog charm. This Wilson, for all his gentle warmth, is not someone it's safe to fall for. And still...how could House deny him anything?

01:23 pm The Other Last Duet by Loranova (R)
Me again, and off to a late start driving the Oz van here. While I'm waiting for a chance to rec some recent entries in an Oz fic challenge, though, there's no reason not to dig back a ways and pull out a golden oldie that shouldn't be forgotten...

Fandom: Oz
Pairing: B/K
Author on LJ: not that i know of
Author website: author's page at C5 archive
Why this must be read:

Because it hurts so good, and gives an insight into Keller that isn't commonplace. Loranova only wrote a handful of stories in the fandom, bringing a unique touch to them all. Several make you truly laugh out loud. This one, Chris reflecting on Toby and his life as he languishes in protective custody S5, will break your heart.

02:08 pm Sapphires set in Diamonds by Deborah (PG-13)
Fandom: LORD OF THE RINGS
Pairing: Legolas/Gimli
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] deborah_judge
Author Website: Deborah's Stories Page
Why this must be read: Gimli is a difficult character to write, as Tolkien made him somewhat comic relief, but also gave the sense that he ran deep. This lovely story by Deborah gives us another take on Gimli, showing us something of why Gimli is so often mysterious, and how the fellowship's idea of dwarves is based on a foundless assumption. "Sapphires set in Diamonds" also has one of the sweetest endings I've read in this pairing.

04:14 pm The Meaning of Marriage by Gigi Sinclair (PG)
Fandom: HOUSE
Pairing: House/Wilson
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] gigitrek
Author website: Gigi Sinclair's Slash Emporium
Why this must be read:

"It was hell being married to James Wilson."

That's how Gigi Sinclair's story The Meaning of Marriage starts. It ends with one of the most perfect last sentences I know, and one of the most ironically painful.

This is not, as you might think, a story about Wilson's actual marriage. Instead, it is about the marriage-like commitment between House and his best friend, brought into stark relief for House during a period when Wilson is staying at his apartment. In its portrayal of that quirky friendship, it's an often hilarious story. But on a deeper level, it is also about each and every one of Wilson's relationships, about the warmth of his tenderness and the impermanence of his attention, about the things that make him a wonderful husband and the things that make him a horrible one. And it is about unspoken, perhaps unrequited love. In short, it's one of my very favourite House fics.

07:57 pm Undertow by quigonejinn (R)
Fandom: HORATIO HORNBLOWER
Pairing: Horatio Hornblower/William Bush
Author on LJ:[livejournal.com profile] quigonejimm
Author Website:NA
Why this must be read:

Undertow is based entirely in the Hornblower bookverse but completely accessible to those without knowledge of the books. The language is sparse and beautiful and communicates the distance, duty and sheer loneliness that surrounds the lives of both of these men except for those fleeting moments throughout the long history of their service together when they briefly touch. The author deftly moves through the chronology of the novels using them as reference points for time and place. Each moment when they come together strongly marked and strongly remembered.

Highly recommended.

Hey.

Fandom: QUEER AS FOLK USA
Pairing: Brian/Justin
Author on LJ: Not Known
Author Website: Mercury Rising
Why this must be read: I am a sucker for post season 2 fics in which Brian makes the first move AND the guys are totally in character. I also really like Erin's alternating POV stories which aren't so introspective as to make the guys 12-year-old girls.

09:00 pm When Comes the Dawn by Medie (PG)
Oops! For some reason, I forgot that I was driving the Stargate SG-1 van this month. Hee! Anyway, I'm [Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com]. I try to rec a variety of fics. Although I'm almost completely a Daniel Jackson fan, I'm going to try, this time around, to rec other characters and some of my favorite stories that feature them. *g*

Fandom: STARGATE SG-1
Pairing: Jack/Janet
Author on LJ: [Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com]
Author Website: A Curious Mix
Why this must be read:

Okay, I admit that this story is one I call 'an old standby'. I am pretty much a closet Jack/Janet shipper. However, it's not something that I've always enjoyed. This story changed that. She presents Jack and Janet in a way that is so... well, believable. If you have never read [Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com]'s work, I have to say that she has, in my opinion, one of the best 'Jack voices' around. So when she came up with this fic, I could completely see Jack and Janet together. This story won second place in the Isis Awards last year in the Jack/Janet category, and I know it deserved it.

So anyway, here it is...
