Fandom: HOUSE Pairing: House/Wilson Author on LJ: wickedwordsAuthor's website: Rachael Sabotini's House O'FanficWhy this must be read:House's garbage disposal has broken down, and Wilson offers to fix it. While doing so, he proceeds to break all the little rules that allow his relationship with House to stay safe. The result is amusing, fascinating and wickedly hot. My favourite thing about this story is its deep physicality, the straightforward discriptions of Wilson's beautiful body and what even the sight of it can do to House. Just the image of Wilson sprawled under House's sink would be enough for me to recommend this fic, but of course there's much more to it than that. Go find out for yourself - as always, regardless of fandom, Rachael Sabotini's work is worth every minute of your time. The Manly Art of Home Repair

Fandom: FIREFLY Pairing: Jayne/River Author on LJ: neroliAuthor Website: homepageWhy this must be read: This is a nicely plotted long fic that details the bond that develops between Jayne and River. After Jayne's ma's death, the crew heads to his home to visit his brother on the way to a job. And on the way, they discover a lot about each other--not just River and Jayne. If you want River knitting, and Jayne rescuing, and a prettily little woven tale, this one's it. Delta Rain

Our last stop this month will be at the McGarry Memorial Gardens to pay our respects. Thanks to everyone who rode along! I'd hoped to get in a lot more recommendations, but Real Life didn't want to cooperate. With any luck, one of these recs will lead you to an author or an archive worth exploring.Fandom: WEST WING Pairing: None, Leo gen Author on LJ: nomadicwriterAuthor Website: http://www.cybamall.com/nomadsrealm/index.htmWhy this must be read:As I was looking through the previously recommendeds, I noticed that Nomad has been absent since the very first few posts for this fandom. Such an oversight must certainly be corrected, no? Especially since Nomad has a wonderful grasp of the characters and a undeniable talent for bringing out the unspoken moments that rest between the dramas that play out on our screens. Going through my bookmarks in search of a suitable re-introduction of this author, I noticed that she'd updated recently with a new WW one-shot. I had planned to read it after I'd posted this rec, but couldn't resist the temptation. Why must this be read? Because when I first read it, I couldn't read the last few lines for all the crying. Because I finished reading Pax a month ago and I haven't stopped thinking about it since then. Because it's a beautiful tribute to John Spencer and the character he so ably portrayed. And because the love and respect that Nomad has for both the actor and the character shines through in every word. Pax in Bellobut don't stop there! everything by nomad is worth the time you'll spend.

Fandom: HARRY POTTER Pairing: Remus/Sirius, Remus/Tonks Author on LJ: penknifeAuthor Website: Penknife to PaperWhy this must be read:This is a huge amount of fun to read! It includes some great meta-commentary on both canon and fanon, summing up nearly everything I love and everything that annoys me about MWPP and MWPP fanfiction. It's witty and hilarious, but overall the "25 stories" are also quite touching and realistic. ( excerpt! )25 stories Penknife never wrote about the Marauders

Fandom: HORATIO HORNBLOWER Pairing: William Bush/Archie Kennedy Author on LJ: rach74Author Website:NA Why this must be read: Among the major characters that populate the A&E movieverse adaptations of the C.S. Forester novels, the pairing of Archie Kennedy & William Bush is rarely written. Thankfully rach74 has adopted them, bridging the events and characterizations of the books and the movies and blending them together in her Kingston Days Universe. And this pairing works. "Affirmation" is set in the Sheerness era of the book canon and after the episode "Duty" in the movieverse adaptations. Archie Kennedy is a strong and capable character providing a strut of support for William Bush as he deals with the direct and collateral issues of losing a limb, and the very real prospect of never again having a posting at sea. These issues are revealed and explored through the relationship between these 2 men, and not always in an idyllic fashion. But at the core there are the ties that bind through all adversity. Fandom: HIGHLANDER Pairing: (Duncan/Methos) Author on LJ: unknown Author Website: unknown Why this must be read:One of those angsty D/M emotional rollercoaster stories that I found impossible to put down, until I finished reading it. The last section had me anxiously on the edge of my seat. This is my last story rec - I had a lovely time this month remembering these stories and reccing them here. The Shadow Of The Sword

Fandom: FIREFLY Pairing: None Author on LJ: trisana_mcgrawAuthor Website: Fanfic.net profileWhy this must be read: You can't talk about the series without mentioning the ship. This short fic delves into the relationship that Mal has with Serenity, and why, from Zoe's point of view, any woman would always be another woman, and how much Mal needs someone like Serenity to love. Love at First Sight

Fandom: SPORTS NIGHT Pairing: Dan/Casey Author on LJ: janissa11Author Website: EmlandWhy this must be read: This one carries a death fic warning, which may not be everyone's cup of tea, but it is so well written that it has to be recced no matter what. Casey, many years on from Sports Night, looks back on love and loss and the person who meant most to him. Featuring a delightful original character in the form of Casey's grandson Brian, this beautiful little fic hurts in all the right places, and I dare you not to shed a tear after reading it. Post a comment below to take a turn pimping your (non- Bandom, non- One Direction) RPF fandom! A week in advance of your assigned month you will be notified with a reply to your comment. During that time, you agree to post a minimum of 1 fic per week in the following format: Subject: Title by Author (Rating) Fandom: YOUR FANDOM Pairing: (no abbreviations, please) Author on LJ: (if applicable) Author Website: (author's fics, if available) Why this must be read: Emphasis should be on fics that you feel are especially outstanding and accessible examples of your fandom, e.g. it plays on a repeated theme in the fandom, it's a fandom or a personal favourite, it was a controversial fic, it's good smut. Whatever. Warnings are not required beyond what the author has posted on their own stories. Note: The only restriction on RPS is for college atheletics. Whether actor, musician or sports figure, they must be professionals to be featured here. Thanks for playing and remember, kids! Without you, the crack_van will run out of gas!! (snerk)

Fandom: ANGEL Pairing: Cordelia/Doyle Author on LJ: none Author Website: none Why this must be read:Summary: With the birth of Darla's baby fast approaching, Cordelia interferes with an attempt on Angel's life, but the consequences of her actions send her back to 1999... mere days before Doyle is to die on the Quintessa. Keeping the Cordelia-theme of this month, I give you another gem: take Cordelia, circa 1999. Take Cordelia, circa 2001. Interchange. Sit back and enjoy the ride. This story has everything that makes up a true story: wonderful characters, amazing storyline, mysterious demons, Cordelia, Doyle and time travel. Honestly, if you only ever read one Angel story, let it be this one. And then weep that it was never made into a real episode. ( Read more... )Impact

Fandom: Due South Pairing: None Author on LJ: shayheyredAuthor Website: Chez ShayWhy this must be read:Lt. Harding Welsh watches out for his men. He always has. Framed around Ray Vecchio's phonecall to Fraser in Burning Down the House, this is a fabulous look at Harding Welsh and his leadership style. Each scene is concise and information rich, revealing another layer of Welsh's character and the events that have shaped him. Keeping Watch

Fandom: HORATIO HORNBLOWER Pairing: Archie Kennedy/Jack Simpson Author on LJ: randomalia Author Website:NA Why this must be read:
This is a compact ficlet, written with an economy of phrase but still deeply layered with meaning. It is a richly painted image of Kennedy's life as a boy in Scotland and a chilling picture of what his life became behind the wooden walls of the Royal Navy. Broken fragments of the past mixing with the present in a mosaic of smell and sound and light.
Beautifully crafted.

Fandom: Due South Pairing: Benton Fraser/Ray Kowalski, in a way Author on LJ: damned_colonialAuthor Website: The ScriptoriumWhy this story must be read:A while back ds_flashfiction had the Genderfuck Challenge and lo, it was a beautiful, beautiful thing. In Chasing Fraser, Skud turns the classic slash story on it's head by turning Stanley Raymond Kowalski not just into a woman, but into a lesbian, Raelene "Ray" Kowalski. In a series of sharp bold strokes she creates an alternate Ray who is both the character we love and someone else entirely, a complicated and compelling woman, whose whole identity is being turned upside down by one Benton Fraser. Fandom: MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E. Pairing: Napoleon/Illya Author on LJ: leethetAuthor Website: Unknown Why this must be read:Now, come back to slash before I got slashed myself! (I mean flogged with a "cat o'nine tails" by irrated and frustrated LJ users). Though, actually, this story is not slash, in the common (fanfictional) sense of the word, not even noticeably slashy or pre-slash, but the accent put on the sentimental relationship of the partners is so strong that I really cannot think about it as gen. It's fine with me since I always favored ambiguity and mixed genres. Lee the T has already so many (well deserved) recommendations in crack_van that I first intended to choose a less popular story and a less known author (since my aim was always to propose a choice as wide as possible) but, eventually, I considered I couldn't leave this one outside. It was one of the first ten stories I read in MFU fanfiction and I kept a fond and vivid memory of it, because of his emotional impact and angsty suspense. I am also a sucker of "partner disparition" story, if such a category does exist. I am not going to give more light about the plot; it wouldn't be wise. Just think: What are you still able to remember when you have forgotten everything...almost? Oubliette

I've just done some cleaning house on volunteer posts, and want to remind you guys of a few things: The Monthly Featured Fandom sign up sheet for small and miscellaneous (or previously full-time, now retired) fandoms is still very long.
You can cut to the front of the line if you complete your fandom overview early. DO NOT sign up on this sheet until you have COMPLETED your fandom overview. That seriously chaps my ass, mmkay?
You can also cut to the front of the line if your fandom's overview has already been posted here, and you simply want to make another month of recs. If you sign up for a currently full-time fandom in this thread I will delete your comment. Check this post if you're confused about the process.
If you think your fandom is big enough to go full time, you must be able to produce a) at least 8 additional volunteers, and b) a fandom overview. There are several fandoms that people have indicated are large enough, but have not taken the ball to get them full-time. If you meet the requirements, comment here.

Fandom: BUFFY Pairing: Buffy/Spike Author on LJ: missmurchisonAuthor Website: ChiaroscuroWhy this must be read:
For my last rec - Buffy/Spike is the pairing that dragged me into fanfiction. While I have since moved over to the dark side (slash!), I still have fond memories of the hours spent reading every Buffy/Spike story I could find. This is one of the best. It's an epic story full of romance and adventure. Strange dreams abound as Spike and Buffy find themselves undertaking a journey of self-discovery. As the pair's relationship grows deeper, the rest of the Scoobies must decide where they stand. Old friends and enemies must be dealt with, and a mysterious prophecy appears that will change everything. Chiaroscuro
