It's an "episode in a box", but Kassidy has edited it so effectively, flashing back and forward along the timeline, that you don't actually have to be familiar with the series to understand perfectly well what's going on. The song fits beautifully, as well. (And hey, it's just one of my favorite songs anyway, so it never hurts to hear it again!) Go! Watch! We see Travis through Hoshi's eyes but it's the *how* we see him that's the incredible part. Kylie does an incredible job of tying Hoshi's profession into her view of the world and the people in. It sounds like Hoshi in a way I don't usually hear and I was absolutely caught up when I was reading it and I honestly say if I didn't love the characters in this story before I read it I would've loved them that much more afterward. Granted, there are more than a few stories that make things...interesting, shall we say. But taking James and Remus from their usual pairings can be something of a challenge--because really, who can imagine James without Lily Potter? That, I think, is why I enjoy this story. Not only is it witty with a convincing plot, but it takes two characters that normally never get action with each other and puts them together. The result is charming, interesting, and hot. James was anxious about the House Cup game, sixth year. It was against Ravenclaw, and they'd been showing a distressing tendency towards strategy lately. James was no good at strategy, really. He was good at flying fast and seeing small golden balls and catching them. Strategy had never really entered into it. Now he was studying things like feints and dodges and generally feeling a bit intimidated. So he'd made a bet with Remus, because Remus wouldn't let it slip like Sirius or Peter would (he thought), and betting on a game one was in wasn't really considered...well, a Gryffindor thing to do. Even if he was betting on winning.
"If I win, you've got to buy me Chinese next time we're in London. I keep smelling it whenever I go to Diagon Alley and you know, I've never tried it," James had said, one day, in the dormitories. Title: AfterburnFandom: Star Trek: The Next Generation Pairing: Odan/Beverly, Riker/Troi, Riker/Crusher (of sorts) Author On LJ: n/a Author Website: n/a Why this must be read:This is another story I found through leyenn and as she said in her rec of it, one thing TNG didn't do a lot of was good follow up to the events of episodes and given how much went on in TNG's "The Host" (the introduction of the Trill) this *needed* to be done and, of course, never was. This story provides an incredibly solid and very in depth post-episode for "The Host". It hits all the marks by dealing with the complications of Beverly's involvement with Odan whilst the symbiont was being hosted in Riker, with Deanna's view of the whole thing, with Will's view of the whole thing and gets in some great character moments with everyone along the way. This was originally printed in an Orion Press fanzine and is being hosted on the Beta Ori Publications website along with a lot more equally fantastic work so please check out the fic and explore the the others as well. The choice of song fits so well with the video. There's just the right balance of literality with the lyrics and the feel of the music. The swift cuts do a good job of 'introducing' the characters before moving on. Particularly the use of flashback scenes and repeating of similar clips with lyrics hold it together. Why this must be read: Hello, Deadpool’s in it. Deadpool should be in everything. Dangerous Liaisons is goofy and funny and crass and offensive and everything that makes Deadpool awesome. Also, this is an early story of Ascian, aka Marjorie Liu. She just published X-Men: Dark Mirror, which is probably the best comic-based novel I’ve ever read. And while that’s not saying a whole lot since comic-based novels generally blow chunks, it really is a good book and it’s fun to see where she started and to point and laugh and say, “SEE! Fanfic writers CAN turn into for reals writers who get paid and everything.”
