Why this must be read: I love stories that capture the creepy vibe of the show, and this story has a great gothic sensibility, set in a small Southern town with witches, vengeful spirits, missing children, and good ol' boys who don't cotton much to outsiders. It's told from Sam's POV and has great insight into his character. The relationship between the brothers feels very organic, both when they're arguing over what to listen to on the radio and when they're holding on to each other in the middle of the night.

Go read and give the author some love:

Why this must be read:

We see Anakin Skywalker through the eyes of his mother in this fic. She sees and understands him more clearly than anyone. She sees his virtues and strengths and his flaws and weaknesses, and loves him in her gentle way. When he lived with her, her life revolved around him. When he left, she coped, but something was always missing. When he came back and she saw him as a man, her joy was full and her life was complete.

This quiet, contemplative fic is a delight to read. It is not necessarily slow, but it does not have the action often associated with the Galaxy Far, Far Away. The reader empathizes with Shmi and begins to see Anakin as she does. And though the fic ends on a somewhat bittersweet note, there is a sense of satisfaction, of completeness, for both Shmi and the reader. Anakin parts from his mother and goes on to his fate, but the reader gets the sense she will be waiting for him when the time comes.

The story has few characters, but those that it does have -- Shmi, Anakin, and Qui-Gon -- are always in character. Their voices ring completely true, and this fic is as canon compliant as it is possible to be. Highly recommended.

Fandom: THE WEST WING
Characters: Jed Bartlet, Josh Lyman
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] khohen1
Author Website: kHo's Fanfiction
Why this must be read:
This is the third KHo fic I've rec'd this month. Whenever I feel the need of a good, Josh-centric story which isn't necessarily a Josh/Donna fic, I have a look through KHo's stuff and can invariably find something to read! She writes Josh really, really well, and as she shows here (and elsewhere) is no slouch when it comes to the other characters either! This fic is a "missing scene" type thing, set after the S6 episode Drought Conditions (you know the one... where Josh and Toby have the fight!), wherein Jed and Josh talk about the women in their lives. It's beautifully written, the dialogue is spot on, and Jed's little revelation about his first love is absolutely priceless - and quite believable.
Read, enjoy...

Why this must be read: Virgin Erestor! *g* No really.
Actually, I love how naughty the twins are in this one, as well as how moody Glorfindel can be when having to wait. All in all, it's just a long pwp with some plot and general hotness :)

The story comes in three parts

Part 1: The Prize

Part 2: Mine

Part 3: Doubt not

Why this story must be read:
Well, it's the prequel (although it is safe to say that you can read these stories on their own) to another story I recced earlier this month called "Hallowed Fate" and if that story stirred some feelings and the pairing was lovely, this is something more. I just love a good , sensitive but opinionated Legolas , but I think most of all I love the idea that a bond can be formed between 2 people or 2 elves early in their life and that at some point will come to be something deeper.

I think that the journey Eresse takes the reader through this is a lot more compelling than the actual end of the story, a journey through Middle Earth and the life of her characters. Dammit I'm a sucker for her Elrohir/Legolas. Oh did I mention the sex? *g* I think that one of these days I might read or rec a story that is not NC-17 and the world will come to an end :)

Fandom: Man From U.N.C.L.E.
Characters: Napoleon/Illya
Author on LJ: [info]st_crispins
Author Website: St. Crispin's Day Society

Why this must be read:

During The Gurnius Affair Illya impersonates one of the bad guys. While the agents wait for their rescue, Illya is forced to torture Napoleon in order to maintain his cover. Unfortunately for Napoleon, the pain gets very bad, but it is better than the alternative: if Illya doesn't do this, Napoleon will be summarily killed.

How did Napoleon survive the pain? What mind tricks did he use? And, how far does he trust his partner?

A fascinating look into Napoleon's mind as he tries to ride out the agony ripping through his body as well as not blow Illya's cover.

So now the guards are stripping off his suit jacket and yanking the knot in his tie and slamming him against a tall, black slant board that reminds him of the bottom of a coffin without the sides. And now they are buckling his wrists and crisscrossing his chest with unforgiving leather straps that press his rib cage and nip the sides of his throat.

And now they are sticking three pads trailing wires to his forehead, one at each temple and one right between the eyes.

Oh, this is bad, he thinks. Very, very bad.
