Fandom: STARGATE ATLANTIS
Pairing: McKay/Sheppard

Author Website: Intimations
Why this must be read:

Shalott has a way of taking stuff that SHOULD be crackfic of the worst degree and making it warm and real and sexy and really, really good. This particular piece is wildly AU, except that when it comes to our two main characters? It isn't. She has a deft hand with humour, and a keen understanding of that fact that true humour lies in the realest of every day absurdities, rather than overplayed gags and hijinks.

This story made me happy, and it made me snort English Breakfast tea out of my nose at least once.

10:32 am Dreaming of You by Carene (NC-17)
Fandom: HIGHLANDER
Pairing: Duncan/Methos
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] carenejeans
Author Website: The Garret: The Sky Parlour

Why this must be read:
Beautiful descriptions and characterisations make this story a delight to read. Almost overshadowed by the hot sex you'll find surprisingly apt insights into their psyches. Carene takes you inside the head of the characters so you feel their emotions, their love, and their little insecurities.

04:47 pm The Key and Dead Bolt by Crowswork (PG)
Fandom: THE SENTINEL
Pairing: none (gen)
Author on LJ: unknown
Author Website: Wolfpup's Den
Why this must be read:

Crowswork is a storyteller in all the best traditions of Sentinel fiction - a mystery to be solved, Blair bashing, Jim bashing, gruff buddy-buddy tenderness, a plot twist or two, bad dates, a dash of mysticism, lots of witty banter, near deaths, narrow escapes, psycho baddies, courage, and guilt told in a brisk and breezy style. What more could a fangirl want? Whenever Crowswork turns up on the New Arrivals page at the Cascade Library I print off the story and settle in for a satisfying bedtime read.

It was hard to pick a story to rec. I considered Lost in which the bad guys try to convince Jim that Blair is a figment of his imagination but decided on The Key and its companion piece, Deadbolt.

Women are being strangled. No one can find the connection between the victims until the case is kicked up to Major Crimes and they discover that Blair knew them all. No one wants to believe it but the forensic evidence is pointing right at Sandburg.

Excerpt from Dead Bolt

"Simon told me you were about half-dead when you insisted on looking for me." Jim was rolling back and forth on the ornate grill work that made up the floor.

"Nah." Blair grinned as he walked toward the kitchen. "I was only one-quarter dead. Found your soggy ass anyway."

"Did I ever thank you for that? You know -- get all gushy and tell you how much it meant and all?"

"Nah."

"Consider it said."

04:59 pm The Masquerade Series #2, "RentBoys," by catlover2x and fred_bear (NC17)
Fandom: CSI
Pairing: Nick/Greg
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] catlover2x and [livejournal.com profile] fred_bear
Author Website: unknown
Why this must be read: Let's talk about porn. Sometimes, you just gotta have it. 'nuff said.

The Masquerade Series is a massive collection of PWPs by catlover and fred_bear. It's something like nineteen parts now, but they can all be read as stand-alones. Each is a Role Play Fantasy with two parts, one for Nick and one for Greg. RentBoys is the second story in the series and one of my favorite, being both well written and incredibly hot. There's a bit of a tongue-in-cheek "like an AU but not" concept; in the first part Greg acts out Nick's fantasy and in the second Nick fulfills Greg's. Warnings for gratuitous use of eyeliner and cowboy jokes.

06:37 pm Beautiful by Audrarose (NC-17)
Fandom: SUPERNATURAL
Pairing: Sam/Dean
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] audrarose
Author Website: Audra's Slash Garden
Why this must be read: Dean goes goth to try to fly under the radar at a gritty LA club while they look for vampires, but Sam's the one who understands that what you can't see can hurt you. Sam does what he has to do to protect his brother, and it stirs desires in them both that may well leave some damage. This story has wonderful atmosphere, the danger all the creepier for being unseen. There's a great use of Sam's psychic powers, and the sex is hot and gritty and very real in the way it hints at lasting consequences. Check out the sequel too, Broken.

11:20 pm The Year of Hell Logs by Sabine (R)
Fandom: STAR TREK: VOYAGER
Pairing: gen
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] iamsab
Author Website: You guys are just fucked
Why this must be read:

This fic is set during the episode Year of Hell (before that pesky deus ex machina erased the year) and looks at the senior staff, Janeway and Torres in particular, as they struggle to survive on a ship that's crumbling around them, with no crew and very little in the way of hope. The Janeway characterisation in particular is great.

Janeway stared at him. "Lieutenant, we are six people and a
hologram, 65 thousand light-years from home, trapped in the middle
of a nebula in the middle of a war with an enemy that would like
nothing better than to erase us from history. This ship is the only
thing that's keeping us alive, and the bridge is her nerve center. We
owe it to Voyager to keep her alive as well."
