08:47 am How the Question Stole Christmas by Kerianne (PG)
Fandom: JUSTICE LEAGUE
Pairing: Huntress/Question
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] kerikeri
Author Website: JLA Unlimited profile
Why this must be read:

Hands-down, the quirkiest 'ship in JLU canon has to be Huntress/Question. She's a barely-clad vigilante with a crossbow and a chip on her shoulder. He's a paranoid conspiracy-nut without a face. Together, they fight crime. The 'ship is like the little black dress of the fandom: I've talked to die-hard anti-canon people who squee whenever H/Q is mentioned even in passing.

As you might guess by the title, "How the Question Stole Christmas" is a comedic piece, which works very well for this pairing. Helena is at her snarky best, trying hard not to kill the man she loves, while Vic brings his ... special ... view of reality to one of the biggest mysteries of the holiday season: where does that man in the red suit get all his wonderful toys?

Why this must be read:

Simon is this story is way more naive than the Simon we know by the end of the series and movie, but I keep in mind this story was written back when Firefly the series was still being aired and incomplete. I think it’s a fun piece. Somewhat of a PWP, but who cares? It’s hot. And I applaud anyone who dives into Simon’s past, trying to explain his character more so.

Why this must be read:

Toby Ziegler is one of the most complicated characters on The West Wing, and from the first appearance of his ex-wife, Congresswoman Andrea (Andi) Wyatt, it's clear that they still have chemistry and a very real connection. However, their relationship remains a complex and ambiguous one, through the end of the show's run. This fic does a fabulous job of illuminating their individual characters and the choices each of them has made, as well as their relationship with their children and their much more tenuous relationship with each other, all through the lens of a seemingly simple holiday celebration. This author also has a wonderful grasp on the characters of Huck and Molly--s/he has a gift for capturing the way young children perceive the world, what they love and what they fear. Also, the command of tone and language is beautifully evident throughout this fic--I could quote almost any line, I think:

Fandom: ANGEL
Pairing: Wes/Buffy
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] sallyanne
Author Website: Let It Burn
Why this must be read:

Like I said, I'm a complete sucker for alternate universe fics. This particular one from hold_that_thought is a Wishverse AU that looks into what could have made Buffy into the person that she was in that episode. And as an added squeal-worthy bonus, it also includes Wesley as her watcher instead of Giles. The fic spans a few years, starting right after the movie and ending with the episode (and for everyone who know what happens there and refuses to acknowledge it, there's also an alternate ending).

What I like the most about this fic is how utterly believable it is. Buffy in Wishverse always struck me as a little off kilter, like she could have never turned out to be like that. But away from Giles, Willow, and Xander as influences in her life and with Wesley as her watcher, this transformation becomes logical and almost inevitable. It's fascinating to see all the little things that made Buffy into her wishverse character.

Happy reading and don't forget to send feedback!
