01:54 am Joy Ride by rayne_y_daze (PG)
Fandom: ANGEL
Pairing: Spike/Wes
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] rayne_y_daze
Author Website: Look in the memories
Why this must be read:

I'm being sidetracked into Wes and Spike land again. This time with a ficlet from rayne_y_daze that's set in S5 and features Spike and Wesley escaping the rigours of the office for a little while. There's a cute set of drabbles on the same page before the fic starts, explaining exactly why they're so eager to get away. It's a fun fic and makes me giggle like crazy when I read it.

For anyone reluctant to read because of the slash, don't worry, because it's practically non-existant (there's just enough to make me sappy happy and wish for a sequel). So enjoy and please don't forget to send feedback.

07:33 am Requital by J S Cavalcante (NC-17)
Fandom: STAR TREK: THE ORIGINAL SERIES
Pairing: Kirk/Spock, Spock/Chapel
Author on LJ: j_s_cavalcante
Author Website: None
Why this must be read:

Some of the most powerful slash stories are those set from the perspective of a person outside the relationship. “Requital” is from the POV of Christine Chapel and is set immediately after the episode “Return to Tomorrow”. In that episode, Chapel and Spock ‘shared consciousness together’. And during that sharing, they learn certain truths about each other.

The story opens with Spock visiting Chapel. He intends to find some way to make amends for what he learned in her mind: that Henoch raped her while that entity was in possession of Spock’s body. Chapel, in turn, has learned that she and Spock have something in common: unrequited love. As much as she loves Spock, he loves Kirk. But he has never found the ability to tell Kirk what he feels.

Their meeting is a catalyst for change for both of them.

J S Cavalcante’s writing is powerful, lyrical, beautiful. Go here...

04:41 pm Things They Didn’t Need To Know by Arlene (PG-13)
Fandom: DC COMICS
Pairing: Alfred Pennyworth/Leslie Thompkins
Author on LJ: N/A
Author Website: Fanfiction.net Profile
Why this must be read:

This story is very funny just for the reactions of the Bat Clan to the idea of a romance between Alfred and Leslie. It was about time for me to recommend a story that wasn’t an epic. This story is not very long, but it is good. Allof Arlene’s stories are worth reading, as well.

06:20 pm Little Boy Lost by Dannell Lites (PG)
Fandom: DC COMICS
Pairing: None
Author on LJ: N/A
Author Website: The archive of the late Dannell Lites.
Why this must be read:

Dannell Lites wrote many wonderful stories in her time as an author. In this one, for example, we learn of the first meeting between Bruce Wayne and Clark Kent, many years before either of them will become heroes. At this point, Bruce has run away from Gotham, and is using the alias of Alfred (Clark calls him Al)--he ends up living with Clark for a little while in Smallville.

The story is told from Clark’s point of view as he gradually learns more and more about his mysterious guest. If anyone is confused, this is not set during the show of Smallville at all. It just takes place in the town of Smallville.

08:50 pm Chains by Viviana (PG)
Fandom: MAN FROM UNCLE
Pairing: Napoleon/Illya (pre-slash)
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] viviana7
Author Website: None. Stories archived on her LJ and at Chrome and Gunmetal Madhouse
Why this must be read:

This story is an epilogue to the first-season episode, "Terbuf". In that episode we learn a lot about Napoleon, especially his vulnerabilities and sense of honor. Viviana then turns the experience around to show us how those revelations affect Illya, as he spends the journey to safety pondering the nature of love and commitment, and the reasons for both.

An unashamedly romantic glimpse into both men's hearts, this is my favorite of Viviana's stories. Their characterizations ring true, especially in the way they hear what remains unsaid.

You won't regret reading this one.

09:02 pm The One Who Holds The Seven Stars by Marginalia (PG)
Fandom: MASTER AND COMMANDER
Pairing: Aubrey/Maturin, because there's a kiss, but really, it's nothing that would be out of place in the canon.
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] marginalia
Author Website: marginalia
Why this must be read:

This is apocalypse fic, but despite being quite properly serious and not funny at all, it somehow manages to be the most uplifting and inspiring apocalypse fic I've ever read. (And I've read way too much apocalypse fic.) It's nicely written, but the thing that really stands out for me is Jack and Stephen's responses to said apocalypse. Seriously, I just melted. It's so them, and such a great illustration of everything I love about their relationship: they have bad things, sometimes really bad things, but they still love each other.

Plus, did I mention the dialogue? I am complete and total sucker for good dialogue. I find being able to hear the characters speak is the biggest hurdle to believable fanfic, and this clears it easily. I would kind of flail a bit longer, but really, this is worth reading, so get to it already.

09:29 pm Might Still Shine Bright by June (R)
Fandom: JUSTICE LEAGUE
Pairing: Diana / Audrey
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] thecryingwillow
Author Website: FF.net profile
Why this must be read:

Once upon a time, there was an episode called "Maid of Honor," in which Princess Diana met Princess Audrey and they bonded immediately. They went shopping. They went dancing. They parted at sunrise on the top of the Eiffel Tower. Then Audrey married someone else and Diana threw a tank through the church wall at the "Does anyone here object" part. The subtext? Not very subtle.

As I've mentioned before, there exists a canonical AU in Justice League canon, dubbed the Lorderverse. In this story, June examines the alternate universe Diana and the alternate universe Audrey, and what they have together in a world where Diana and her friends control everything. Heartbreaking and brittle, this is a short (2000 words) look at what might have been.
