That's just what KellyGirl does with this story. But what I think I like best is the way that while Tony believes that he's chasing Gibbs down, that he's doing the seducing, that he's in control, and that it's just another casual night, the reader can clearly see that the truth is just the opposite. It's really difficult for an author to have her POV character believe one thing and simultaneously have the readers believe something else, but KellyGirl pulls it off beautifully here. This lushy written "five things" fic loops from horror (blood on the ground) to light humor (McKay didn't trip) and then back. Each section, unrelated to the section before, describes a new kind of god, with oblique references to events that aren't fully explained but that have brought about an end. Behind each section is the implication that things have been happening, that events are out of human control. This fic stands out because of its sensuous wordplay: cold hands, the taste of juice, bright, hungry eyes, all of it about, as Sheppard says, mocking McKay, "the end of the world as we know it," and the gods, or chance, that make it so. Characters and events drawn from canon are alluded to and expanded on: the importance of Charin to Teyla, Halling's role among the Athosians, the occasion of Jinto's birth, all of which take on a new resonance when viewed through the prism of what is to come. The progress from a solemn Batman and playful Catwoman skirting around their feelings to them getting closer and closer makes this a fascinating read. Catwoman is just the person needed to slap some sense into Batman, and he keeps her grounded as well. All of Batman’s Rogues become so utterly human and sympathetic that, as time goes on, you feel like you should be rooting for them to win. And the situations everyone ends up getting into leave you breathless from laughter--one of many reasons why this is yet another of my favorite Batman/Catwoman stories. This fanfic is wonderfully written, and includes enough twists and turns to satisfy any fanfic reader--just don’t let the sheer size of this epic frighten you away.
