She's a remarkably clean, evocative writer who brings out the grain of her characters with deceptively effortless skill. Retreat is one of three short stories that form a chain: Push, Retreat, and An Easy Trajectory. It takes place after "Angel Dark, Demon Bright," when the crew is dealing with guilt and survival, allegience and betrayal, fate and free will. The story focuses on Harper and his reactions, with Tyr taking a less central role. Tyr's involvement, however, is both pivotal and poignant, against the background of "Angel"'s events. Fandom: CSI: Crime Scene Investigation Pairing: Nick/Greg, minor Grissom/Sara. Author on LJ: clarrisaniAuthor Website: Jedi RoyalsWhy this must be read: This is one of the better break-up/every one leaves stories out there, because the characters are well written and how the team broke up was extremely believable, for some reason. It's got several points from all the current seasons, and a big one from this last one, season six's episode Gum Drops. It's slightly depressing, and can make you cry if you're very emotional at the time and it's 1 in the morning and you've had no sleep. Not that I'm speaking from experience. “I’ll find a loophole, G. There’s gotta be one and I’ll find it, I swear.”

Fandom: Stargate Atlantis Pairing: Ford-centric mostly gen (with non explicit Mckay/Sheppard and maybe kind of sort of Ford/OMC... ish) Author on LJ: hth_the_firstAuthor's Website: Fierce FLawlessWhy this story must be read: I have a huge thing for Ford and an even huger thing for fic in which Ford is done justice. In Handsome Johnny, Hth fills out Ford and makes him a person beyond the Marine. The insights into how he decided to join the Atlantis mission, the guilt over not being sent into 'actual' combat, all collide to make Ford much more nuanced than most people give him credit for. Mostly I like the way Ford is clearly deciding to 'grow up', putting childish things aside and following these people he's come to trust and like into a different kind of wilderness. The look at the rest of the Atlantis crew from Ford's point of view is also not to be missed. The intimacy of the Antarctic base, the comraderie... In this ATF series, Chris is starting to deal with the overwhelming grief of losing his family. When he realizes he is ready to move on he finds love in the last place he had expected - right in front of him. This series has it all - friendship, love, lust, plus a dash of angst to spice things up. "It's hard, Buck," Chris broke in, not knowing if he could stand to hear that song, not knowing if he could stand not to, "I can hardly hear her voice anymore. I have to work at it, to be able to remember what she sounded like. What she smelled like."
A laugh came across the line, and Chris wondered what the hell he'd said that was remotely funny.
"Turn to page fifteen, Chris. Now tell me you can't hear her in the second picture on the right."

Fandom: THE WEST WING Pairing: CJ/Sam friendship. Indirectly about Toby. Author on LJ: darklAuthor Website: None. Why this must be read: It's set during The Al Smith Dinner (7x06) after Toby leaves, and it gives a kind of closure with how CJ is dealing with his departure. It reclaims Toby as the character we've known and loved. The author captures both CJ and Sam very well. “Bingo! And then Toby was there and I fell in the pool and the next thing I knew, I was handing out press passes in Manchester.”
“Wait—you fell into a pool?!”
“Yes.” CJ said, curtly.
“I don’t…like, a swimming pool? How in the world—”

Fandom: X-FILES Pairing: Mulder/Skinner Author on LJ: unknown Author Website: Lyrica's LabrynthWhy this must be read: Lyrica is an amazing writer. She writes sex scenes that absolutely scorch your face off, and they're in-character, and the lead-in is so well-written that there's no hurry to get to the action. He squinted, trying to see Skinner’s expression against the bright backlight of the afternoon sun, frowning when he realized that Skinner had maneuvered until his back was to the window. Without even realizing it, Mulder had completed almost an 180-degree turn in response to Skinner’s movement, the two of them shifting like dancers without music. Like light on water.
Was it something Skinner did unconsciously…always putting himself so that his face was in shadow and the person he was confronting was blinded by the bright light? When Skinner was bearing down on him, wings spread until he was taking up the room, light glowing off the spotless white shirts, Mulder was always reminded of the pictures of angels he’d seen as a child, terrible and beautiful creatures limned in golden light. But was this angel swooping down to save him or condemn him? Closet Faith | | |
