But like anything within this former fab four, it's just not that easy. "You can't sleep," said Duncan, propping himself up on one elbow. This was true. Logan was sitting there against the headboard in his wide, luxurious bed, his bedside lamp still on, an arm crossed over his bare chest, staring off into space. Duncan knew he was probably even twisting his bottom lip pensively with the fingers of his right hand. He'd seen Logan's dad doing that once, too, and it was a far cry from how rugged and heroic Mr. Echolls looked in the movies. After a moment, Logan focused his dark eyes onto Duncan and laughed. It was that vacant laugh that he always did at the most inappropriate times - like the absent-minded cousin of Logan's typical forceful laugh.

This is warm and sweet and funny and sexy, and just a touch achy, all the things a good Mal/Kaylee story should be. In the interest of full disclosure, this story was written as a gift for me, and it really hits on all the reasons I ship Mal/Kaylee in the first place. She wobbles most of the way back to Serenity, and Mal has to pull her close to keep her from falling. Not that Kaylee seems to mind much. Not that Mal really does, either, if he’s honest. She’s warm and comforting against him, and, when she smiles up at him, all innocent and pretty looking, he thinks he’d probably quite like to kiss that smile, to take her laughter and share it between them for a while, to know what it would be like to feel her hope and her joy as part of him. And then he curses her silently for making him think of her in ways that he’s sure he really oughtn’t.

FANDOM: NCIS Pairing: None Author on LJ: N/A Author Website: 'Brothers in Arms'Why this must be read: It's case fic where the team has to travel to New Orleans and solve a mystery. The whole team is involved and Lila writes them in character so perfectly it's not hard to imagine this on the tv screen. Lila doesn't cut corners and the result is a great story that shows off Gibbs and his team. Waiting, Gibbs took a deep swallow of his coffee. "There is no such thing as vampires, Tony."
"Historically---," began Ducky, still lingering over the photos.
"Ducky? The plane…" reminded Gibbs.
"Oh, right." The ME gave a crooked smile and stooped down for his bags.
"Come on, Tony," Kate bumped the unmoving body with her purse. "If you get nervous I’ll loan you my crucifix."
Having managed to herd the ME into the elevator, Gibbs released the button holding the door open. "You two get a move on or you’re taking the stairs."
A suddenly motile Tony lunged for the rapidly closing doors and managed to squeeze in before they shut altogether. On the other side, Kate looked at her silver, distorted reflection and sighed. Story | | |

Fandom: BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER Pairing: Giles/Ethan Author on LJ: riani1Author Website: Two Ladies of QualityWhy this must be read:You'll want to start with "Reflections in a Turning Mirror" so that you know why Rupert and Ethan are working together during the fight against the First Evil. I like these stories because of the feeling of deep attachment and shared history between Giles and Ethan. (Those afraid of old-guy slash, fear not: there's nothing graphic. The R rating is for violence.) Besides, Giles/Ethan is practically canon in my eyes, and I like a story that makes me think they could have a future together even after all the strife between them. (Minor nitpick for "No Going Back": I have a complaint about Giles' use of "geisha" early in that story to refer to attendants in a "sleazy bath house," a mistake that a fluent speaker of Japanese wouldn't make.)
