Why this must be read: There's a fair amount of "a contemplative Duncan worships Methos" fic out there, but sometimes it's just done right and feels right.  This author is new to the HL fandom (Yay, new authors!), writing mostly in the HP fanverse, but she demonstrates a real feel not just for Methos' complex character, but she has a lovely gift for language and structure.

Fandom: THE X-FILES
Pairing: Mulder/Scully
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] synaesthete7
Author Website: Mystic Wild Parabola

Why this must be read: This is a case file much like those episodes that were fan favorites during the show's run: Mulder and Scully are part of the X-File, not just investigating it. When Mulder loses the memory of who and what he is, he and Scully must solve the crime as well as deal with the fall out in both their professional and personal relationships. The story is well-written, the suspect is creepy, the narrative is tension-filled and takes some unexpected turns. A few XF fic clichés are brought up and dealt with in an interesting way, as well. Possessions was recommended to me by a friend years ago, and I've always been puzzled as to why it's never been more frequently recommended.

'You know,' he murmured, 'I could be wrong, but I was kind of expecting more from the afterlife than this.' )

Fandom: X-MEN MOVIEVERSE
Pairing: Jean/Scott, with Charles/Erik in the background
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] penknife
Author Website: Penknife to Paper
Why this must be read:

This short piece by [livejournal.com profile] penknife, which isn't erotica in the conventional sense, is nonetheless one of the sexiest fics I've ever read. The story asks "how close is too close?," exploring the irony that Jean and Scott's famous psychic bond can actually get in the way of intimacy. This is the story that made me fall in love with Scott and Jean as a pairing. Jean's interaction with Charles is equally striking, as it shows the sense of more-than-friendship but not-exactly-family that runs through so many relationships among the X-team.

I can't pull a quote from this story, or I'd be quoting the whole thing, so here's the opening:

Jean wishes sometimes that she could just have sex with Scott without having him in her head. )
