02:15 am Ten Tales by Berne (PG-13)
Fandom: PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN
Pairing: Jack Sparrow, Bootstrap Bill
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] berne
Author Website: her LJ memories
Why this must be read:

Berne has given her vivid imagination free rein and come up with a really wonderful series of fantastical stories that do much to illuminate Jack Sparrow's character, and Bill Turner's as well. These are, to quote the author, "ten Jack-and-Bill tales, beginning with their first meeting and ending with the mutiny," told from Bill's point of view. And, as backstories go, this one's a keeper.

Like the best fairy tales, this fic is chock full of magic and humor, with just the right touch of darkness to give it a memorable richness. A thoroughly enjoyable read.

08:49 am Emergence by Killa (NC-17)
Fandom:  Highlander
Pairing:  Duncan/Methos
Author on LJ:  [personal profile] killabeez
Author Website:  Killa's Adventures in Melodrama
Why this must be read:  Because sometimes it's about teh HOT!  Killa is one of the premier writers in Highlander (and whatever other fandoms she blesses with her multi-talented gifts), and it is my good fortune that this story, which was originally a zine story posted in Crossed Swords and Senses, was recently made available online.  It is a classic first-time story, set immediately after Richie's deadly encounter with the peace-loving false Methos.  It is lush and very, very sexy.

09:43 am Predator by Morgan (Mature or R)
Fandom: THE SENTINEL
Pairing: Blair/OMC. Jim is definitely a presence in this story, however.
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] morgan32
Author Website: Creative Imperative
Why this must be read:
This is a fascinating AU which plays merry hell with fanon ideas of what it might mean to be a sentinel. It's dark fic, not gratuitously so, but not for fragile flowers either. It stands alone but there’s a sequel, Perspectives, and another sequel, Protector, in the works.

11:33 pm Appendix B by Stella (R)
Fandom: HOUSE
Pairing: None

Why this must be read: There are a lot of stories in the fandom where one of the major characters contracts an illness of some kind, which, given the canon, is highly understandable. It's a valid storytelling device, but I feel it's unfairly used - most stories that take that idea end up on the unhappy end of the spectrum, which can get repetive. This one goes the opposite route and finds humor in what's normally a very serious situation. It does so by simply letting the characters be themselves. Which, given the canon, is also understandable.

"Let me tell you a little something about ethics in medicine."

"Oh, this is gonna be good. Give me a minute."

Cuddy chuckled, sitting behind her desk and mockingly rolling her eyes up at the man standing in front of her. She began to clear the clutter on her desk and reached for the phone. "Carol, hold my calls. And uh, check the forecast. I think hell is about to freeze over."

She hung up the phone with one final chuckle and rested one elbow on her desk, her chin on her hand, her eyes wide with interest. "Go ahead."

House looked at her, not quite as amused as she, his hand gripping his cane tightly. "I am a doctor. I took an oath."

"And knowing you, you probably had your fingers crossed behind your back," Cuddy replied, re-arranging the things on her desk.

11:52 pm 'After' Series by kuzibah
Fandom: ANGEL
Pairing: Angel/Spike mostly, mentions of others throughout the series
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] kuzibah
Author Website: The Muse's Oubliette
Why this must be read: This series is one of the best epics I've read in this fandom, especially in the Angel/Spike niche of it. It's also by far one of the best post-NFA epics I've read. Angel and Spike are in a relationship, and its sweet and functional and absolutely adorable while the two retain their characters. Their characterization is perhaps a little lighter than most are accustomed to, and I have a few nitpicks with it, but in general, I just love this series because it has the porn, and the fluff, and the PLOT. Woah. One of the best things about this series is how [livejournal.com profile] kuzibah manages to balance the plot and the relationship - neither of them ever overshadows the other, and I don't find myself being bored by the plot and skipping straight to the smut or vice versa.

She doesn't neglect the other NFA survivors either - Gunn and Illyria all get endings that are original, surprising and yet strangely fitting to their characters. Wesley and Connor also have their own important roles to play in this story, and the characters get a wonderful epilogue in the Christmas Cards 2004 series.
