Why this must be read: This is a long, plotty, mytharc story that goes AU after the episode "En Ami." It's a clever examination of the mytharc and shows, in a very satisfactory way, not only what may have been happening "off screen" during all those mytharc-y episodes, but one possible way the story might have ended. Plus it's got one of the coolest explanations *ever* for one particular mytharc element. It's also darkly funny and full of partner snark -- and not just between M&S.

06:01 pm Conversations with Lady Lazarus by Lilacsigil (PG)
Fandom: X-MEN MOVIEVERSE
Pairing: Gen
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] lilacsigil
Author Website: None known
Why this must be read:

Whatever you think of X3, it raises several intriguing questions: exacaly how did Jean Grey developed the Phoenix personality, and why did Charles Xavier ultimately attempt to suppress it? These questions are glossed over fairly quickly, in canon, but, happily, a lot of fanfic is emerging on to deal with that very subject. "Conversations with Lady Lazarus," tells Jean's story, largely through Charles's point of view. The story touches on Charles's relationship with Erik, and Jean's relationship with both of them, as well as her X-teammates. [livejournal.com profile] lilacsigil's highly versatile gifts as a writer are on display here, in a story that ranges from poetic evocation of Sylvia Plath, to witty dialogue, to snappy and well-crafted action scenes. Also, because I'm a sucker for such, I have to mention that it involves Cyclops making "elaborate battle plans, which took longer to explain than perform."

Quoting from the beginning, because sometimes that's the best place to start:

Jean's knee-socks had stayed up for the entire trip to Westchester, and showed no signs of becoming grubby or wrinkled. Her tartan skirt was crisply pleated, and her hair didn't stray from its Alice band. She sat opposite Charles, her posture neat and her expression grim, and Charles, for the first time, wondered why on earth he had persuaded Erik that this was a good idea.

07:58 pm The Legend of Mission Creek by MacNair (PG-13)
Fandom:  Highlander
Pairing:  N/A
Author on LJ:  unknown
Author website:  Fic at Daire's Fanfic Refuge
Why this must be read:  I wanted to rec something that showcases one of the great appeals of the Highlander fandom -  the infinite span of history that our characters encompass.   You can go forward or backward in time, evoking places and events and societies and when that is done well, and includes our beloved characters, it can be a real joy.  Most stories that capitalize on this use flashbacks, and there are a number of great ones that have already been rec'd.  But this story is set entirely in the past, in the Olde West and features Duncan and Connor MacLeod working together, learning together and fighting together, complete with spurs and chaps and branding irons, all lovingly described.  Their foe is a product of the time and the place and of nature, but it is a very scary threat, nonetheless.  I have a quibble or two about some Connor characterization, but this story is a terrific example of how the Highlander fandom is so much more than attractive characters who take a lickin' and keep on tickin'.

08:35 pm Doctor Who and the Board Game of Death by nostalgia (G)
Fandom: DOCTOR WHO
Pairing: None
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] nostalgia_lj
Author Website: nostalgia for an age yet to come
Why this must be read:

Let me just first admit: I know pretty much nothing about two thirds of these characters. I'd heard of Fitz in passing, Anji never, but to my credit I watched the entire Eighth Doctor movie without having to bleach my brain. Twice! I've never read any of the novels (or listened to the Big Finish audios, for that matter), but while I read this fic, I could not stop laughing. You can see bits of every Doctor in Nos's Eight (including the one who got a laughable TV movie and no character development), and from reading one fic, I know pretty much everything I need to know about Anji and Fitz.

And I have to admit, the image of the Doctor playing Monopoly and trying to make it communist is perfect.

10:43 pm Eight Simple Rules for Dating Greg House by ijemanja (PG-13)
Fandom: HOUSE
Pairing: House/Cuddy
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] ijemanja
Author Website: Author's memories
Why this must be read: House/Cuddy is getting easier to find, but still is reasonably uncommon. This is one of the best takes on it I've seen. I admit to having a weakness for stories that pull off unusual situations, and House on a date - of his own free will - definitely is one of those.

There was a moment's silence and then:

"Just one more," he said. "Then you can go back to planning that labour-intensive beauty regimen of yours."

"Fine," she agreed shortly, if only because he would go ahead and ask no matter what she said.

There was another pause as he fidgeted with his cane. "What are you doing tonight?" he said finally, through a wince.

"Oh," she replied, as she continued to type away, "I'll probably just heat something up for dinner, catch up on some reading... What about you?"

"Well right now I'm trying to ask you out. Since you're not cooperating, later on isn't looking too promising, either."

"Get your feet off the furniture," she suggested with a small smile down at her keyboard, "Then we'll talk."

11:31 pm The Enticement by Scattered Logic (NC-17)
Fandom: LABYRINTH
Pairing: Jareth/Sarah
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] scatteredlogic
Author Website: http://www.digital-quill.org/ and http://www.scatteredlogic.net/

Why this must be read:

In a few of my other fandoms, it's a time-honored cliche to isolate two characters in a Canadian shack to turn up the heat between them. The cabin here isn't in Canada, and Jareth and Sarah aren't precisely alone, but this story works for me in all of the ways that Canadian shack fics work for me, with some extra added bonuses. The labyrinth itself has a sentience, and power, and this story just yanked me in and didn't let me go. Jareth's vulnerability to the city of this modern world totally worked for me, as did the explanation of Sarah's art. Yay for misunderstandings and bickering!

"We remain incomplete," the Labyrinth reproached.

Jareth immediately reached out with his mind. The link to the Underground was almost within his grasp, but remained frustratingly elusive.

"Return my magic," Jareth demanded.

"You must fulfill our bargain," the Labyrinth replied.
