I'm going to be your tour guide/driver through the Andromeda fandom for October. We're a small fandom, and most of us either know or have heard of each other (at least in LJ-space, or those affiliated with maryavatar's Andromeda Uncovered website and mailing list.) Sadly, the fandom fizzled out toward the end of the third season, with only a few diehards continuing to write and/or rec stories. Hopefully I can do my part to drum up interest in this fandom.
Speaking of Maryavatar, I decided that the first story/series I was going to rec would be her "Pouncing on People."
Fandom: ANDROMEDA
Pairing: Harper/Tyr
Author on LJ: maryavatar
Author Website: Amused and Abused
Why this must be read:
The most common portrayal of Tyr in fanfic is as a odd cross between Klingon and Vulcan. Tyr is shown as dominant, aggressive, and only interested in procreative sex, even in the slash fics (where it's explained as either "practice" or a "dominance" thing.)
Maryavatar takes a slightly different tack with "Pouncing on People." In the story, (a short series of linked PWP ficlets) Nietszcheans have a genetic predisposition to being attracted to certain useful survival traits such as intelligence, regardless of the sex of the individual they're attracted to--and Harper is a genius.
What results is a game of cat and mouse with Tyr pouncing on Harper, and Harper not minding very much. This story manages to be cute and funny, with a few brief bouts of seriousness, because even a light PWP needs to deal with Harper's backstory, IMO.

Fandom: Starsky and Hutch Pairing: Starsky/Hutch Author: Callisto Author on LJ:
Why this MUST be read:
Callisto has a deceptively easy breezy style that knocks you out. And there aren't enough stories about Nicky. And she weaves in a little Butch and Sundance. What else do you need?

Hey. I'm Hope, and I'll be taking over NCIS for this month. NCIS is a show that owns my soul in nearly every way possible, a fact that is quite well reflected in my fic tastes. I'll start reading most anything I come across, and will stick with it no matter the pairing or plot as long as it does well to capture the light-hearted but serious tone of the show. that said, I'm planning on using my month to show off the more girl (and girlslash) friendly parts of the fandom. the boys are all good and fine, but they tend to get more than their fair share of attention. which is a true shame, as there are more than a few strong & hot as hell women to be had on screen and in fic. to ease us in, though, I'm going to start off with a lovely teamfic that was written for me as a part of apocalyptothon. Fandom: NCIS Pairing: none (teamfic) Author on LJ: suaineAuthor Website: Abandoned StarlightWhy this must be read: short answer? ZOMBIES. long answer? suaine expertly uses short sentences and quick punchlines to pull you into the comfortable rhythm of the show. she makes a b-movie plot device come off as something to be taken seriously, creating a story that is at once both sad and funny. the characters are perfectly in voice, and the team chemistry is just as well put together as it should be. also, there are zombies. Fandom: MEN'S PROFESSIONAL TENNIS RPS Pairing: Andy Roddick/Roger Federer Author on LJ: astonishAuthor Website: Play Suspended - AstonishWhy this must be read:I thought I'd start with something of a cracker. It's set after the Wimbledon semi-finals of 2003 when Roger beat Andy. Andy's on the prowl and Roger's the prey, though he doesn't know that yet. astonish writes beautifully, her descriptions are amazing and characterisation is equally gorgeous, not to mention spot-on. Her Andy has me doing cartwheels round the room because he's just that great. It's also very hot. Read everything else of her's too. The press of the pen was cool against his skin, ink standing out stark against flesh. Andy put the tip of his tongue to the corner of his mouth as he scribbled down his number and Roger found himself thinking the strangest thoughts, thoughts that weren't his, things that he had never ever thought before.By Heart

Fandom: due South Pairing: Kowalski/Vecchio Author on LJ: capella_fic Author Website: Capella's Fiction Why this story must be read:Wrong was written for me as part of the out_of_con_txt fic/icon exchange, and is seriously one of the best things I have ever read. This story and its continuation Crazy exactly encapsulate what I love about Ray/Ray - skating on the edge of disaster, snarky, and just so painfully, beautifully flawed. (And really hot. But that is just icing on the cake) They are assigned to investigate the murders of local drag queens, and Ray K must pose as drag queen for the case. It is wacky, funny, and painful. It is an interesting case, reads exactly like one of the episoes, and it just hits so many emotional buttons from the high highs to the low lows. Seriously, just go and read it now! (Because Ray K in drag - not to be missed! And Vecchio agrees with me ...)

Hey, I'm drakyndra, and I'll be reccing Doctor Who fics for you this month. Since it's such a diverse fandom, I thought I'd try and get a mix of good fics, so we'll have both Old School and New School fics, as well as het, gen and slash. Also, those in the US currently watching S2 Friday nights, Sci-Fi channel! may want to be careful of spoilers in some fics. Fandom: DOCTOR WHO Pairing: None (slight Doctor/Rose undertones) Author on LJ: Unknown Author Website: Rain's profile on A Teaspoon and an Open MindWhy this must be read:As people on my flist are aware, I tend to put up lists of recommended fanfics on a semi-regular basis for over a year now. This particular fic just happens to be the very first Doctor Who fic I ever recced, and for quite a while was my favourite in the fandom. It's also the fic that turned me from a New School fangirl, with only vague memories of the old series, into someone who who avidly researched Old School characters, just so I pick up all the references in this. (That said, Classic Series knowledge isn't necessary for this. It just makes it more fun) In any case: Something odd happens to the console, and Rose ends up uncontrollably jumping through time. Not only does she have to work out how to get back to her own place in time, but also who on Earth all these strange men hanging around in the TARDIS calling themselves "Doctor" are. With cameos from many old and new characters, some wonderfully complex ways of playing around with time travel, and great set up for the end of S1. And it's fabulous fun, too! Fandom: THE WEST WING Pairing: Charlie Young/Zoey Bartlet Author on LJ: winemaAuthor Website: http://fwf.healthyinterest.net/index.htmlWhy this must be read:If you're looking for some of the very best TWW fic out there, you can't go wrong with Ryo Sen. She seems to inhabit every aspect of the characters -- their inner lives as well as their outward actions. Chiaroscuro is a beautifully rendered portrait of Charlie as he takes stock of his life and the repercussions he can expect from daring to follow his heart. It's the heroic in miniature and the mundane; we should all be so lucky to find this kind of love in our lives. (I dare you to keep from wibbling at the last lines!) Chiaroscuro
