Why this must be read:
What WOULD it have been like if they'd had PCs and email accounts? This retelling of the first two Hornblower series through the use of emails that the characters send to each other is hilarious! Characterization is spot on, especially in a medium where it might seem difficult to manage this feat.

Somehow it is managed admirably and absolute madness is the result. This is the fic that's made me snort beverages onto my screen, that makes me laugh hysterically and that I HAVE to share with my online Hornblower buddies, it just works so WELL

Why this must be read:

One of the beautiful things about the characters Sorkin created for TWW is the fact that we know most of them only in broad strokes, with the occasional details filled in. For the many characters who float on the periphery of the action, there's a multitude of stories and conflicts we can only dream about knowing. This is another of those stories that tries to shade in the gaps, to build up on what we've already seen in order to give us the character we think we know.

I can only speak for myself here, but Nancy McNally was one of the characters who always left me wanting more. How did she end up in her position? How did she justify her decisions -- to herself and to the world at large? Unlike the uniformed men in the Sit Room, she made decisions to end lives without the comfort of a military background and a wall of men and women to support her. Written for Jae Gecko's Defining Moments challenge, What It Means... gives us a glimpse of how Nancy came to reconcile herself to the things she did. It's heartbreaking and so very realistic and, like the show, leaves me breathless for more.

Fandom: DOCTOR WHO
Pairing: Doctor/Rose, Doctor/Others
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] regala_electra
Author Website: Doctor Who fic in memories
Why this must be read:

Despite the fact that certain elements of the Doctor Who fandom still hold tight to the "Doctor as asexual" concept, it's becoming more and more a minority view these days, especially considering the current production team's more overtly sexual take on the Doctor. The rest of us... well, the Doctor is someone who is fascinated by everything and everyone. Why should sex be anything different?

This fic gives us a little glimpse into the Doctor's thoughts about sex, in a simultaneously detached and personal manner. Even as he is there, with Rose, his mind is always racing a million miles an hour. And, like the very best Doctor/Rose fics, it acknowledges the problems of a relationship between the two - the inherent power imbalance of the relationship - and the way what the two of them want is never quite on the same level. The slightly dark take on the Doctor is utterly fascinating, and oh-so believable. Also? It's very, very hot.
