10:44 am Downtime by Cryptile (PG-13)
Fandom: DOCTOR WHO
Pairing: Slight Rose/Mickey, very slight Doctor/Rose
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] cryptile
Author Website: Cryptile's profile on A Teaspoon and an Open Mind
Why this must be read:

"The Tenth Doctor and Rose get used to one another" is one of those fic concepts that has been seen over and over again. Some of them were quite good, some were... not. And it was really quite impressive how from the limited amount we saw on screen, such diverse takes on the one relationship (whether one saw it as platonic or otherwise) really was.

Written only a short time into the second series, this fic not only does what it sets out to do (explain why there seems such a long time period between deciding to travel in The Christmas Invasion, and actually leaving in New Earth), it also does a fabulous job in setting up not only the changed relationship between Rose and the "new" Doctor. And is startling good at foreshadowing some of the themes of the series (which is impressive considering when this was written). As well, it has some wonderfully fun dialogue and characterisation, and is a great look at the Tenth Doctor, coming to terms with himself.

Oh, and watch out for the blue face!

11:11 am Twofish by grindylowe (R)
Fandom: GOOD OMENS
Pairing: Crowley/Aziraphale
Author (not) on LJ: grindylowe
Author Website: The Lab
Why this must be read:

We know from the novel that Crowley and Aziraphale...let's say they enjoy the occasional drink, and so the plot device of having the demon and angel sharing a glass or three of alcohol finds its way into many works of fanfic, but rarely with such welcome results. In "Twofish" we learn something that John Milton's Adam never quite understands about the nature of angels...and maybe something that Crowley and Aziraphale didn't quite understand about themselves.

click here for the relevant text from Milton's Paradise Lost, but be warned that reading it might constitute a spoiler. )

Funny and tender and passionate, by turns, "Twofish" is a lovely story.

01:38 pm You Each Time by Zee and Brown Betty (NC-17)
Fandom: DC COMICS
Pairing: Kon (Superboy)/Tim Drake (Robin)
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] ficbyzee and [livejournal.com profile] brown_betty
Author Website: Pardon Our Nerds and Stories by Brown Betty
Why this must be read:

You Each Time is actually the sequel to a shorter story, The Long Way Around (also NC-17, Superboy/Robin), but I wanted to rec You Each Time because it has everything that I love in the Kon/Tim pairing. The story showcases their intense bond of friendship, the underlying rivalry and tension of their working relationship, and the confusing attraction of two opposite personalities on the cusp of adulthood. Kon's voice is absolutely perfect-- sometimes clueless, occasionally more perceptive than he realizes, and hilariously funny even as he's wallowing in teenaged superhero angst.

02:59 pm Getting It by Etben (NC-17)
Fandom: Due South
Pairing: Fraser/Kowalski/Vecchio
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] etben
Author Website: LJ Tags
Why this story must be read:

Fraser is neurotic. We all know this and love him for it. But sometimes he just gets these wacky ideas into his head. This is Ray and Ray's attempt to disabuse him of the highly stupid notion that they only stick around in their 3-way relationship for him. It is wonderfully in character, highly sweet, and delightfully porny. Just read it!

Fandom: STARGATE SG1
Pairing: Jack/Daniel

Why this must be read:

Absolute Power gave fic writers another Stargate-verse to play in, but the focus in stories is usually on post-'blowing up Moscow'. This one, however, takes place much earlier in the episode's timeline and shows the fracturing of the relationship between Jack and Daniel. Both Jack and Daniel are very much themselves - both Jack from his point-of-view and Daniel's voice - and his perceptions - which are just the right degree of off-normal that fits in with the episode.

And there's are neat cameo appearance by Shifu - along with appropriately cryptic remark.

10:44 pm Harnessed in Slums by tailwind (pg13 or so)
Fandom: BOONDOCK SAINTS
Pairing: Gen: Mrs MacManus, Connor and Murphy MacManus
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] tailwind
Author Website: her journal
Why this must be read: This story explores the twins when they were younger, and also gives a look into why - how - they could become what they are, and do what they do, despite that murder, sanctioned by God or not, is still a social evil. It gives a glimpse into the reason for the twins complete noncholance at the deaths that they cause, and reason for them to be so driven by "truth" and "justice".

Connor and Murphy are, in fact, just about shorter than all their cousins.
