Fandom: HARD CORE LOGO Pairing: Joe/Billy, m/f Author on LJ: Unknown Author Website: The Multifandom Merry-Go RoundWhy this must be read:Joe Dick is a force of nature, a punk-rock hurricane of a man, and his raging personality rocks everyone in Hard Core Logo. This story takes a revealing look at the reasons why Joe has such a deep well of anger. The relationship between Joe and Billy is well-handled. I can believe this view of Joe as way more obsessed with Billy than Billy is with Joe, even though Billy does share that obsession. Billy's elusiveness only fuels Joe's need to take, and this is even truer later in their lives. Seeing it play out in the early days makes sense. Fandom: Pirates of the Caribbean Pairing: Jack Sparrow/James Norrington Author on LJ: homme_sauvageAuthor Website: none Why this must be read:Twenty-four hours in Tortuga with a fallen Commodore. I really like this take on Norrington. He's broken, jagged and razor-edged, but it's not irreparable; he's bitter and caustic but never maudlin. It's a tough line to walk, but homme_sauvage pulls it off fabulously, with this short, but densely packed story. Five Ways to Keep From Drowning

Fandom: Pirates of the Caribbean Pairing: none Author on LJ: linaelynAuthor Website: Cultural InfidelitiesWhy this must be read:Set between the first two movies, this is a truly novel take on the relationship between Jack and Anamaria. Theirs is an interesting relationship, adversarial but with an undercurrent of affection, and of course there's Jack's debt to Anamaria, the ship she won't let him forget he owes her. Linaelyn has a particular gift for writing the pirate minor characters, bringing the denizens of the Pearl to life in vibrant detail. Although this story is all about Jack and Anamaria, Linaelyn's fleshes out their world with a vivid depiction of life aboard the Pearl and a slowly revealed backstory that is surprising and yet strangely perfect. Fandom: Popslash Pairing: JC/Justin Author on LJ: tsammAuthor Website: unawareWhy this must be read: I enjoy any and all pairings in popslash, but JuC is my hardcore favorite, and Fretful is a mini-encapsulation of what I love best about the pairing. There's a history, solid and unspoken, of knowing the other person, good and bad and appreciating them nonetheless. There's the edge of two people who do the same thing but approach the process in different ways, in everything from music to sex. There's genuine affection, aggravation, hot sex, and an underlying love. Plus, Beth writes an awesome pissy JC and that's something not to be missed. Fretful

Fandom: HARD CORE LOGO Pairing: None (but it's always about Joe/Billy in this fandom, isn't it?) Author on LJ: katallisonAuthor Website: Kat AllisonWhy this must be read:This story's a short Joe POV piece set during the movie road trip, and the thoughts, biases and attitudes are pure Joe Dick. The reflective tone suits Joe, who might seem like a creature of the id, but he's a political animal who's self-aware, albeit not self-controlled or well-adjusted. Moonlight Mile

Fandom: HARD CORE LOGO Pairing: Joe/Billy Author on LJ: 2am_optimismAuthor Website: LJ MemoriesWhy this must be read:A series of snapshots of Joe and Billy through the years, ending with the night of drunken sex referred to in the film. I like this version; it seems as likely as any scenario, and it's more appealing than Billy as the victim of a brutal rape by Joe. Virgin Pacific Rim JobAlso posted here in the Yuletide archive

Fandom: HARD CORE LOGO Pairing: Joe/Billy/Mary Author on LJ: sagenessAuthor Website: Fiction by SageWhy this must be read:Joe/Billy OTPers shouldn't be put off by the threesome pairing, because the Joe/Bily pairing is there in every moment. I found this story erotic, and Sage did a great job of making the threesome say a lot about Joe and Billy's tangled relationship. Once

Fandom: DC COMICS Pairing: Kon/Bart Allen Author on LJ: derryderrydownAuthor Website: Gildy ClobberWhy this must be read:"Growing Up Too Fast" is unusual in that it feels like an issue in a comic book that simply doesn't exist yet. The story is set several years in the future, after Bart and Kon have become partners, both romantically and in mentoring the new (New) Teen Titans. The Bart/Kon romance feels very real-- two people who are friends just as much as they are lovers-- but never overwhelms the plot of the story. The world and the characters within it feel organically grown from current canon, and there are tantalizing hints of what has happened in the interim. And I absolutely adore her Bart and Kon-- a little bit older and wiser, but definitely still themselves. Growing Up Too Fast

Fandom: HARD CORE LOGO Pairing: Joe/Billy Author on LJ: catmoranAuthor Website: CatMoran's Fan FictionWhy this must be read:Sorry about the numerous posts, but this fandom has generated a number of stories appropriate for the Halloween season, so I've been saving some stories for the end of the month. I have so many that I have to get started on the 30th. I don't think this could really have happened, but it makes a creepy horror story nonetheless. Making a Legend

Fandom: DC COMICS Pairing: Jason Todd (Batman)/Tim Drake (Robin) Author on LJ: groatyAuthor Website: groaty's memoriesWhy this must be read:Once upon a time, there was a Robin named Jason Todd, who started out as a street kid who impressed Batman by stealing the tires off the Batmobile. Jason was scrappy, tough, and occasionally a little too headstrong and violent for Batman's tastes. Then the Joker beat Robin to death with a crowbar. The end. (But not really, because then a huge Jason Todd fanboy named Judd Winick became the writer for Batman and got to bring back his favorite character... but that's a different story.)"Circles and Semi-Circles" is a fascinating, painful riff on the question of what exactly would have happened, had Bruce died at the end of A Death in the Family and Jason survived. Just as dark and violent as a post-DitF Jason-as-Batman should be. And a Tim who has made himself the perfect Robin for Jason is a scary, scary thing. Circles and Semi-Circles

Fandom: THE X-FILES Pairing: Mulder/Scully Author on LJ: Unknown Author Website: Unknown Why this must be read:The author's warning - This is sad, sad, sad, kids. Bring tissues. - is apt. This post-This Is Not Happening vignette makes profound use of Funeral Blues by WH Auden. I cried when they did it in Four Weddings and a Funeral and I cried when I read it here. My heart breaks easily. There is such honest hurt in this sad and beautiful tale of loss and love. The Stars Are Not Wanted Now.

Fandom: DC COMICS Pairing: Robins. Author on LJ: monkeycrackmaryAuthor Website: evenrobins.netWhy this must be read:"Robins In a Room" (aka Mary's Roomful O'Robins) is an interactive story-telling experiment: a collection of loosely related ficlets written in response to prompts provided by her audience. monkeycrackmary wrote a short framing sequence by which any Robin in the multiverse could be brought together to interact, and then challenged her audience to provide her with Robins to write. There are fifty-two ficlets in Mary's Roomful O'Robins, with Robins ranging from Toon Titans Robin to Red Hood Jason to Robin 3000, and beyond. Way beyond. All of the ficlets are linked off of the main post: Robins In a Room
