Why this must be read:

I'm [livejournal.com profile] viggorlijah, and I'll be reccing Supernatural for November. Because SPN is so much wincest, I'm going to alternate between Dean/Sam, Gen and Het. I'll be looking for some of the odder stories, stylistically.

So to kick off November, the classic succubus-spell PWP with Sam, Dean and John but! Written well enough to work as a real story.

PWPs are tricky beasts. A really good one has to have the bones of a story suggested around the sex or it's just a ripped out sex scene. In Supernatural, John Wincester has a gruff warm paternal vibe with his sons unlike say, Lionel and Lex from Smallville with their smouldering hatred. John is portrayed as a decent but driven man, and stories involving the three of them need a lot of set-up to feel emotionally plausible.

El Camino Real is handled so deftly that you don't realise until the cold slap of the last lines that there was no set-up. She grabs you and throws you into a hotel room, catching all these small details in the way the three of them have sex and their markedly different physical movements. By writing from John's point of view at a rapid sense-driven rush, you turn around so many times, you're as dizzy and flushed as he is at the end.

This is a story to be read once for pure enjoyment, again to catch all the emotional interplay just under the surface and then once more to admire the skill of the writing hidden inside straight out smut.

The author warns dubious consent, given it's spell-induced. Not underage, but set pre-series.

Hopefully LJ is working for everyone? Good! On with the recs!

Fandom: DOCTOR WHO
Pairing: Harriet Jones/she who was once Blon Fel Fotch Slitheen
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] saganamidreams
Author Website: A Teaspoon and a Open Mind profile
Why this must be read: The Doctor makes a lot of choices - telling Harriet to let the Sycorax go at the end of The Christmas Invasion, sending Blon the Slitheen home, reborn, for a second chance at life. This story brilliantly uses these two elements - and the idea that the Doctor's choices aren't always right - to create a story that's incredibly moving, a reflection on fear, regret, fate, and hope, while also being utterly clever and perfectly woven (there's time travel with no visible seams, a remarkable feat, and it manages to fit right into the canon continuity and even explain it better). And as a bonus, it gives us two strong, wise, yet fallible and aware women, with a hint of a connection that goes deeper. A truly beautiful story.

06:59 pm Hawkmoon Christmas 1 & 2, by Occula and Melissa2u, (NC-17)
Fandom: U2
Pairing: Bono/Larry Mullen, Jr/The Edge/Adam Clayton
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] occula, [livejournal.com profile] melissa2u
Author Website:[livejournal.com profile] u2slash: and please note, to join you must be over eighteen years of age AND have your birth year on your profile page.
Why this must be read:

Hawkmoon, many U2 fangirls would argue, is a centrepiece of U2 slash. It's practically a fandom all by itself - when you find a U2 slashgirl with "hawkmoon" in her LJ interests, she probably isn't referring to the song. I don't know anyone in the fandom who doesn't follow this story, and I would have to hand in my U2 slashgirl card if I didn't rec it in the fandom's first ever [livejournal.com profile] crack_van outing.

I don't even know where to start. Trying to do this sprawling epic any sort of justice in a few paragraphs is mind-blowingly difficult. The basics: It's AU. It's multi-pairing. It's enormous, easily the longest fanfic I've ever read and ever expect to read.

I'm actually just reccing the pair of Hawkmoon Christmas stories, because they're all I *can* rec without breaking the no-WIP rule. Hawkmoon Christmas 1 and 2 are a perfectly self-contained pair of sidebars to the "real" story - you don't need to have read the main story and you don't need to read it afterwards (although if you'd like to...) These stories are even an AU of the AU. They're PWP (not that it's ever that simple in Hawkmoon) and just bursting with love and joy and caring and, oh yeah. Mind-blowingly incendiary sex. And, like in the main body of the story, there is plenty of fun to be had trainspotting - Occ and Mel are very clever about weaving U2 lyrics into the stories, and picking them out is a fun little exercise.

07:14 pm Syni Molniya by Tarshaan (PG)
Fandom: HIGHLANDER

Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] tarshaan
Author Website: tarsh's cave
Character: OMC; Matthew McCormick makes an appearance in the sequel.
Why this must be read: You get to see the terrifying mystery of Immortality from the perspective of a confused new Immortal.

My last rec gave us a glimpse of the young Duncan MacLeod immediately after discovering his Immortality. Eventually, his kinsman Connor MacLeod arrived to teach him how to live as an Immortal. But what about the unlucky Immortals who don't have a teacher to help them?

Syni Molniya is written from the POV of an original character who becomes Immortal in modern day America. He is guided by nothing more than a garbled old legend and his instinct to survive.

A taste )

Read Syni Molniya and the sequel, At the Root of the World Tree.
