03:01 pm "Into the Fold" by Neoinean (PG)
Fandom: HIGHLANDER
Author on LJ: None known
Author Website: None known, but her stories are archived at Fanfiction.net
Character: Duncan MacLeod, Richie Ryan, Tessa Noel
Why this must be read: In the first episode of Highlander, Richie Ryan is a punk kid who gets caught breaking into MacLeod's antique store. By the second episode, Richie is living and working at the store. Wouldn't you like to know how that happened?

This is the first in a series of stories by Neoinean focused on the relationships between Richie, Tessa, and Duncan in the first and second seasons of Highlander. Duncan finds Richie running scared and wounded from a gang of teenagers. He brings him to the hospital and begins to take more of an interest in the pre-Immortal boy he promised Connor he'd keep an eye on. Overlook the occasional typos. Read this story for the slow building of trust and the realistic details, like the pain of riding a bus with stitches and eating peanut butter sandwiches when you can't afford anything else.

Read Into the Fold and (IMHO) Neoinean's finest work, the heart-breakingly real WIP Christmas story Seeking Shelter.

Fandom: U2
Pairing: Adam Clayton/The Edge

Why this must be read:

This is a lovely example of a baby!U2 story, centred around the band's high school days, and it exhibits the endearing tentativeness and confusion often found in this genre. This is told from Edge's POV, and shows how awareness of Adam gradually insinuates itself into Edge's consciousness. Something happens which makes both boys realise the interest is mutual, but, in true teenagerly fashion, even after the event, neither has the guts to make a move and the second-guessing begins. It's not an angst-fest, though, it's just very believable behaviour from two emotionally and sexually inexperienced young men. It also touches on the moral problems these guys might have had, being both young, from a Christian background and from a not-terribly-sexually liberated society like '70s and early '80s Dublin. I confess to a weakness for this genre, and if I wasn't trying to spread out my recs as much as possible I could probably do a dozen baby!fic recs alone.
