02:00 am The River by Cunien (PG-13)
Fandom: BAND OF BROTHERS
Pairing: Gen, Roe and Luz
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] cunien
Author Website: Band of Brothers fic in Memories
Why this must be read: First off, Cunien has one of the most beautifully original writing voices in the fandom: imagistic, surrealistic, and always straining to move beyond physical description into something more. She's written a good deal of fic, all of which is worth reading, but I chose this story as representative of not only her style but of two of her favorite characters. It's a poetic and profound look at the experience of Bastogne--how Roe comes to be the medic that he is, how Luz learns about battlefield luck and faith, and what happens when their roles are reversed. And damn, but it's a compelling read.

Truth is all around now. Truth is flowing from him in sickly-sweet congealed lumps, spreading out through the snow like a halo. This is real. This is truth.

Fandom: BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN
Pairing: Jack Twist/Ennis del Mar

Why this must be read:

In honor of the holiday, I’d like to present this companion pair of ficlets which achieves something rare and wonderful: PWP that characterizes so well it doesn’t read like PWP. It’s sexy, fun, and rough-tumblin’ cowboy lovin’, which I think we all need more of in our lives, especially around the holidays. Do note that these are novella canon, so if you notice details that disagree with the film, that’s why.

Fandom: TWIN PEAKS

Warnings: Spoilers for season two
Why this must be read:

When David Lynch and Mark Frost pitched their show to ABC, they opened with the image of a body by a lake. Laura Palmer’s death was meant to be a MacGuffin, an excuse to draw Agent Cooper and the audience into the life of her hometown, but even after the murderer was revealed and the investigation closed, she never ceded her central place in the show (a reality reflected by the fact that in almost every episode the end credits ran over a close-up of Laura’s homecoming queen portrait). Charlie Quinn’s story vividly portrays Twin Peaks as a small community, tightly bound by memory and feeling, but threatening to splinter under the weight of the darkness from within and outside.
There's not a part of Twin Peaks that Laura doesn't scramble into. From the Double R Diner, to the Great Northern, she's more a part of the town now in death than she ever was alive, stronger and fixed in everyone's memories. Pete Martell thinks that maybe Laura's death took the last of Twin Peaks' innocence, shattering it like a cheap china ornament. Laura herself knew better — Twin Peaks was never innocent.

07:43 pm And/Or by Elizabeth Bear (PG-13)
Fandom: ANTHROPOMORFIC
Pairing: And/Or
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] matociquala
Author Website: Elizabeth Bear
Why this must be read: If you love language, as I surely do, this story will make you shiver. It's the story of two words, And and Or, and how they come together for the first time. Elizabeth Bear's writing in this is stunningly evocative and no matter how many times I re-read, I always end up thinking "wow".
