12:11 am Four Stories Jack Harkness Doesn't Tell in Bed (and One He Does) by E.E. Beck (R)
Fandom: TORCHWOOD
Pairing: Jack/Ianto with a side of Jack/Doctor/Rose
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] lightgetsin
Author Website: But There's a Devil In The Lookingglass
Why this must be read:

For the great look at Jack and Ianto and how it might look, for the peek inside Jack's head, and for him trying to explain the Doctor and Rose (and the battle of Canary Wharf) without actually telling Ianto about the Doctor and Rose.

02:42 am General, dein Tank ist ein starker Wagen by Sabine (NC-17)
Fandom: BAND OF BROTHERS
Pairing: Winters/Nixon
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] iamsab
Author Website: You Guys Are Just Fucked
Why this must be read: This is one of the more explicit fics in the fandom (which doesn't have that many to begin with), but if there's anyone I'd trust to make it work, it's Sabine. And she does. This is a story about Winters and Nixon, sure, and it's hot enough to melt all the snow in Bastogne--you could read it for that alone. But as short as it is, it's also about a whole lot more. Most of all, it's a story about how Winters is forced to look at the war, in hierarchies and figures, in cold calculations; and it's about the ways he finds, in Nixon, to stay warm and human.

Captain Lewis Nixon’s melting snow for coffee. Two officers in one tent, gotta be worth at least a platoon on the line. You warm your hands over the Sterno and wonder which platoon’s gonna go down for you. Buck Compton’s men are top of the line; they’d make a reasonable sacrifice. Lieutenant Peacock’s platoon would be a steal.

You hate this war.

12:58 pm 'All Hearts, Which I By Lacking' by Ellen Fremedon (R)
Fandom: SANDMAN
Pairing: Hob Gadling/Dream
Author on lj: [livejournal.com profile] ellen_fremedon
Author Website: Ellen Fremedon's Fanfic
Why the fic must be read:

This story is a bit quiet, a bit understated, but deceptively so: everything from Hob's insistance that he is Dream's friend, to his attempts to reassure Dream that, yes, Dream has changed are wonderfully and subtlely done, until, at the end, you are suprised that it was only a conversation you read, and not something more. I love the details of this peice, the way that Hob and Dream play off each other and how Hob so obviously cares for Dream. The writing is lovely, the characters are spot on, and the whole thing is dream-like and very wonderful.

All Hearts, Which I By Lacking

P.S. In case you've been living under a fandom rock these past few weeks, you should know that this year's [livejournal.com profile] yuletide stories are up for reading. There are several really wonderful Sandman stories (including one written for me!) there that you should check out. I won't be reccing any because the authors are revealed on January first (aka, once I'm done with my stint here), but if you're looking for some new fic in this fandom head over there now!

03:18 pm The Secret Tapes of D.C./Private Letters of A.R., by Dorothy Marley (PG-13)
Fandom: TWIN PEAKS
Pairing: Cooper/Rosenfield
Author on lj: [livejournal.com profile] dmarley
Author Website: http://dmarley.mattachine.com
Why the fic must be read:

The Autobiography has only passing mentions of Dale Cooper’s pre-Twin Peaks encounters with Albert Rosenfield, which gives fanfic writers a lot of leeway. Dorothy Marley gives each man’s account of how their professional relationship moved into new territory, and she does a fantastic job of capturing both character’s voices.

04:16 pm Cut and Run by Arlene (PG-13)
Fandom: NEWSIES
Pairing: Gen, Spot and Racetrack
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] sleeping_fish
Author Website: Arlene2
Why this must be read:

Through a series of card games, the history of Spot's and Racetrack's friendship and rivalry is revealed. This fic gives a fascinatingly probable backstory for two of the movie's most charismatic newsies.

“You ain’t welcome here no more,” Spot announced.

Race looked up at him sharply. That was new. He’d never been banished before. In truth, he would’ve rather been soaked. He made a lot of money in Brooklyn, not to mention he sold there a fair amount of the time. Of course, Spot knew all that and probably figured it would hurt more than a few punches.

“You made me do that,” Spot said a moment later, dropping his voice so only Racetrack could hear. It wasn’t an apology, it was a simple statement of fact. Race had never seen Spot regret anything.

“I know,” Race conceded. He had backed Spot into a corner, insulted him repeatedly and had done it in front of his boys. He deserved what he got, but it was worth it. He would have smiled if didn’t hurt so much.

10:14 pm since feeling is first by dollsome (PG)
Fandom: THE OFFICE
Pairing: Jim/Pam, Pam/Roy, Pam&Karen, Pam/Toby
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] dollsome
Author Website: fanfiction.net profile
Why this must be read:

Pairing one character with a lot of different people is one of those things that's a neat fanfic trick but usually deviates a little from plausibility. Which makes it all the more impressive how perfectly, believably Pam this is. The range of tones is perfect, sweet and awkward and longing and funny and this is one of the best fics to come out of season three so far. Such a delightful read. I can't do it justice.

Pam bites her lip. “He’s kinda cute, isn’t he?”

“Definitely,” Karen agrees, pulling the top off her lipstick. “He’s got that whole sweet mopey puppy thing going on that just makes you want to—”

“Hug him, right?” Pam finishes.

Karen smiles wickedly. “Sure. Okay.”

10:38 pm How the 42 Sheep Really Died by marysuebasher (NC-17)
Fandom: BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN
Pairing: Jack Twist/Ennis del Mar/Mexican Whore
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] marysuebasher
Author Website: None
Why this must be read: This is just fun and silly and really (and yes, it's all on purpose), with a movie this depressing, you have to find something to laugh about every one in awhile. Plus, it sends a really strong message about God and global warming--what more can you ask from a fic?

10:57 pm The Language of Drought, by Maya (PG)
Fandom: GETBACKERS
Pairing: Kazuki/Toshiki
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] incandescens
Author's Website: fanfic page; note also the drabble page
Why this must be read:

I would really like to red everything GB that Maya has ever written, but it's not quite practical, so I'm settling for this. It has eir trademark of stunningly beautiful, floaty prose - Maya is good, very very good, at conjurng up a precise mood. In this case, it's about Toshiki's path after Kazuki left, and his accompanying desperation.

Kazuki is more than Toshiki is. Toshiki knows this. He doesn't dispute it. He wouldn't admire and respect Kazuki otherwise. Kazuki is like incense in church, like music in silence, like water in the desert to a thirsty man. Kazuki is richness to Toshiki's soul, food for Toshiki's need to be able to respect something outside himself, a pleasure for Toshiki to watch.

Kazuki is. And Toshiki doesn't know what he wants to ask him for, except that he wants something that Kazuki isn't giving him, and he can feel himself dying inside without it.
