09:44 am Helter Skelter by cryptile (PG-13)

Fandom: DOCTOR WHO
Pairing: None
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] cryptile
Author Website: Cryptile on Teaspoon
Why this must be read:

The girl in the lift wants to know everything.

The Doctor meets Rose Tyler, the girl who wants to know. This is a really excellent take on how the Doctor's view of Rose expanded as the first episode went on, focusing on how Rose just won't leave him alone. It's a wonderful portrayal of just what will make Rose such a good companion for the Doctor -- her persistence, curiosity and bravery is all very clearly shown here, through the Doctor's eyes -- as well as being a very interesting view on the Doctor in the wake of his great tragedy.

Fandom: BATTLESTAR GALACTICA (2003)
Pairing: Kara/Lee
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] voleuse
Author's Website: [livejournal.com profile] moodfic
Why this must be read:

Well, every month of recs needs a good smutfic, in my humble opinion, and this is a good smutfic. In fact, as a bonus, it is the first in a trio of connected smutfics written by an author who gets lots of action on the [livejournal.com profile] crack_van because she's just that good at putting words together. Set in S1 around the time of "Colonial Day", this fic features Kara and Lee bantering, being illicit, and sexing in very nice ways. Relatively angst-free while still maintaining believable characterization-- and really, what else can I say?

Why this must be read:

because it's funny and it's going to give you warm, fuzzy feelings for Richie. There is also disturbing imagery of Santa - what more could you want?

02:38 pm Caper by ALC Punk! (PG)
Fandom: STARGATE SG1
Pairing: Sam/Jack
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] lyssie
Author Website: Lyss' Insanity Lair
Why this must be read: Written in the hardboiled crime fiction style of the 1920's-1940's, [livejournal.com profile] lyssie takes well known characters from Stargate SG1 (along with some lesser known ones, and a couple from Stargate Atlantis) and throws them into an AU crime thriller that works surprisingly well. The writing is fresh and engaging, and the characterisations ring true.

05:19 pm Swim by Rhoddlet (G)
Fandom: STAR WARS
Pairing: None
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] rhoddlet
Author Website: http://shadow.andvapor.org/
Why this must be read:

Rhoddlet is the mistress of the stream of consciousness narrative that ties itself neatly together in the end. This story is no exception. The central story of Anakin learning to swim mixes itself with insights into Obi-Wan, Anakin, and Qui-Gon, all in a quiet, disjointed way.

Fandom: ANGEL
Pairing: Wesley/Spike
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] rayne_y_daze
Author Website Daze of Rayne
Why this must be read: The wonderful thing about this fic is the clarity of the voices; the author captures both Wes and Spike spot on in all their dry, snarky glory. It's just a short, funny breath of fresh air. Check it out and let the author know you enjoyed it.

I have a sort of matched pair of recs today.

Fandom: SENTINEL
Pairing: Jim/Blair
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] gardendoor
Author Website: http://www.geocities.com/gardendoor/
Why this must be read: I really love Blair-gets-amnesia-and-regresses-to-his-childhood stories (and why aren't there any stories where that happens to Jim, I wonder?). I really like this one because it doesn't leave the toys in mint condition, neatly back in their proper places at the end, but there's still a happy ending. And I adore the way Blair keeps all the fragments coordinated--it's so perfectly Blair.

ETA: [livejournal.com profile] embroiderama found a Jim-gets-amnesia story; link in comments.

10:44 pm Three Hires by Sam the Storyteller (PG)
Fandom: HOUSE
Pairing: None
Atuhor on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] sam_storyteller
Author Website: Memories here.
Why this must be read:

Because it’s a funny, realistic look at how Chase, Cameron and Foreman might have been hired. The story is from Chase’s POV, but all the major characters have a least a couple choice lines. I especially like the story of Cameron's hiring. Sam’s been recced before (for his excellent Synchronicity) and with good reason.

Excerpt )"She's stunning," House observed, but Robert saw that look, the one he was already learning to recognise, which meant in about ten minutes either someone would be healed or something would explode. It was his I have an epiphany look. "If I were that stunning, I definitely wouldn't have an MD."

"If you were that stunning I'd have married you instead of Julie," Wilson said.

"So what's wrong with Allison Cameron?" House asked himself.

"Nothing," Wilson said firmly. A muscle flickered in House's jaw. He was still thinking hard about something.

"Fine," he said. "Chase, go find something to do. I'm going to go pretend to interview her before I hire her."

As he walked away, Wilson made a very small yes! gesture, then looked deeply ashamed of himself.

11:49 pm The Healer by alyjude (R)
Fandom: SENTINEL
Pairing: Jim/Blair
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] alyburns
Author Website: http://k9kennel.skeeter63.org/Alyjude.htm
Why this must be read: Five-year-old Blair. Really, need I say more?

Well, I'm gonna, anyway. *G* Alyjude takes the nearly universal fannish amnesia plot and makes it dance with the joy of being five, and though there are many poignant moments, and a few angsty places, the overall tone of the story is quietly happy and loving. She draws a wonderful picture of one kind of love flowing (almost) seamlessly into another, and how sometimes the worst things can bring you some of the best things. She shows us what a wonderful father Jim might have been. And all without an excess of schmaltz.
