Why this must be read:
This is one of the most beautifully written and affecting fics I’ve ever read. In Jim’s voice, the story tells the tale of the slow unravelling of a perfect relationship in such a way, you think your heart will break.

“He squeezed my hand tight and for a second I was transported back to that night on the balcony when I told him the stars above our heads belonged to us. Back to the night I gave him the closest thing to a declaration of love I'd dared. Back to the night I secretly dreamed was one in an unending string of nights we'd be together.

Blair coughed softly and I was snapped back into the horrible present.

"Besides, man, this, this thing between us," his voice was so kind and gentle it hurt my ears, "just isn't working out. Don't get me wrong, Jim, you've been great. You've been more than I could have ever asked for."

"But?" I prompted. The cool, silvery knife-like pain he was piercing my heart with wasn't enough. I wanted him to splay and gut me.

"I'll always be your friend, Jim. Hell, you're the best friend I've ever had. You've always been there for me, man, and I'll never forget that."

I couldn't stop myself. I had to know everything. He was trying to spare my feelings when what I needed was him to cut me just a little deeper so I could die.

"But?" I said again.

"We want totally different things out of this. We're both looking for something we're never going to find with one another." I thought he might cry but instead he smiled. "Staying together like this is wrong and you know it. It's holding us back from finding what we really need. We both deserve more"

- And the greatest tragedy of this sad story is that nothing is resolved. There is no happy ending – for that, you have to read the equally excellent sequel, Near Misses.

Dark, angsty and thoroughly delicious.

Why this must be read:

First of all because it's beautifully written. I am a sucker for words and this author certainly knows how to string them together. Her prose is gorgeous and her style pretty much flawless.

Other than that, because it's a beautiful take on Sam's leaving for Stanford, the things that built up before he did, and the way he lets go and moves on, from John, from Dean and from hunting. It's a fantastic story, really wonderfully written and I just don't know what else to say except... go read it because you won't regret it. :-)

Why this must be read:

Every now and then, I consider the character of Chloe Sullivan and the HUGE smack in the romantic face she's got coming. She thought the matter of Lana was harsh? All she has to do is wait. It's inevitable.

In this story you'll find the aftermath and it hits that tiny, uncharitable feeling every Chloe fan probably has somewhere in her. The "how the hell can they *DO* it to her" and when it hits that feeling, you double it because, yes, Richard's in for more of the same. This story just *NAILS* that feeling. The little irrational flare of pissed off that's as inevitable as the cause. Most days I'm happy to ignore that inevitability and play in AU or with other pairings or what have you...

Other days I want this. This story, that anger, that bitterness. Because yeah.

It's for that reason that I LOVE this story. It hits a visceral place and it's one I needed.
