After my infamous stint back in December reccing Anthropomorfic on the Van, you're probably looking at the fandom title "Women's Business" and imagining... I don't even know what. Something zany; some bizarre, little-known fandom with the good crack.

But whatever you're thinking you are wong, wrong, wrong, so very wrong! See, I just wanted to even the balance a little here, because as much as I love the RPF boys, I love the RPF girls too; I'd even go so far as to say that the RPF girls are pretty bloody fantastic. Hence this set, which, as my crazily inventive title suggests, is all about the secret women's business of RPF. Don't screw your noses up at me! I know just how appealing the boy secks is, goodness knows, but some of these stories about the girls are brain-meltingly good too.

So buckle your seatbelts, kids. You're in for one hell of a ride!

Fandom: WOMEN'S BUSINESS
Pairing: Kylie/Madonna, Britney/Madonna
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] faithtasticfics
Author Website: Pulp [Fiction]
Why this must be read: This was the first really good femmeslash story I ever read, and it's become a re-reading favourite. It's got a hard edge to it that I love, because I can well imagine that these women are driven and obsessive, about their work as well as their loves, and that they sometimes pay the price for that.

01:21 pm King For A Day, by Russet McMillan (PG-13)
Fandom: HIGHLANDER: THE SERIES
Pairing: None
Author Website: Russet J. McMillan’s Fanfic.
Why this must be read:

This is sort of a Freaky Friday type of story. Instead of switching bodies, however, Joe and Duncan Macleod switch mortality/Immortality after a freak lightning storm. The author does a great job of showing the results of that, and the problems that Joe would have if he were Immortal, and the reasons Duncan wouldn’t want to be Immortal again.

Fandom: STARGATE SG-1
Pairing: Daniel/Vala
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] 6beforelunch
Author Website: Nomadic Spirit
Why this must be read:

Daniel and Vala is one of my favorite pairings that never seems to get the treatment it deserves in fandom. But, fortunately for me, [livejournal.com profile] 6beforelunch is around to save the day with this lovely piece of work.

A season 10 fic, we get a peek at Daniel and Vala's dynamic through Jack O'Neill's eyes. It takes the 'outsider pov' and gives it a twist by making that outsider someone who should be an insider which means we get a deliciously introspective look because, really? Jack's the only one in the room who *REALLY* gets what's going on.

It's a GREAT Jack characterization, a fantastic Daniel characterization and the prime example of why Vala with all her battering ram charm is PERFECT.

Fandom: POPSLASH
Pairing: Chris/Lance

Why this must be read: Because the Larry King interview is one of my absolute favourite pieces of footage and this puts the sparkliest and best spin possible on what happened before it.

"There'd been a rumor. Their PR office had gotten a phone call, a heads-up from some sympathetic or meddling insider, which Catherine said "was nothing to worry about, really", but she'd looked worried anyway. She was new, new enough that these kinds of phone calls still unnerved her, made her want to fix it, somehow, to take care of it, to make sure every question that might be asked them was under her careful control. Lance could have told her there was nothing to fix. Lance could have reassured her, Larry King isn't going to out me on national television. Probably."

07:25 pm The Dividing Factor by Niralle (PG)
Fandom: STAR WARS: EXTENDED UNIVERSE
Pairing: Luke/Mara
Author on LJ: unknown
Author Website: unknown
Why this must be read: This story could pass for profic, and is in fact higher quality than most of the post-RotJ EU that I've read. There's an interesting and involved plot, the original characters are realistic and compelling, and the canon characters are true to their canon personalities.

"The Dividing Factor" takes place six months after Tim Zahn's Hand of Thrawn duology, with Niralle writing of a threat to the human race, Luke Skywalker and his new wife Mara being tossed into the middle of the crisis, and everyone learning a few things as they work their way through the situation. I like this story so much because Luke is written as the calm, confident, and compassionate Jedi we see in Return of the Jedi, Mara is still tough and capable without being cold, the love between the two of them is eloquently shown without taking over the plot of the fic, the actual plot is both well-thought out and well-written, and the situation fits extremely well into the galaxy far, far away at that point in time. It's just an all-around good fic.

Hey, I'm [livejournal.com profile] entrenous88, and I'm taking the wheel once again this month to bring you a range of recs in the Buffy fandom. So let's get this baby moving!

Fandom: BUFFY
Pairing: Oz/Xander
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] dolores
Author Website: Dolores' Domain
Why this must be read:

[livejournal.com profile] dolores takes a familiar scenario and twists it in dark and haunting ways. Oz guesses that Xander probably has a crush on him, and Xander shows him how he really feels. But the encounter that confirms Oz's suspicion ends up being a world away from the more comic possibilities of two boys exploring a friendship turning into something more.

No, this Oz and Xander are in the Wishverse, a canon-established alternate world in which Buffy Summers never came to Sunnydale, and the Master rose to power unopposed. The characters face one another in conflicts normally -- Oz fights against vampires and Xander was one of the first students at Sunnydale High to disappear and then reappear in a new, sinister form. But no matter what other allies Oz finds, Xander wants to make sure that Oz knows who it is that he's going to belong to in the end.

Oz's thoughts are perfectly paced here, and the simple central event is persuasively textured by keen observations, melding memories and moments of Sunndydale past and present through a lens of suffering. Lovely, lyrical, and despairing all at once.

10:48 pm Casey McCall Alongside Dan Rydell by leiascully (R)
Fandom: SPORTS NIGHT
Pairing: Casey McCall, Dan Rydell; Dan/other
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] leiascully
Author Website: No Parenthesis

Why this must be read: [livejournal.com profile] leiascully's first foray into Sports Night fanfic (And We Are All Together, which I recced here back in November) became an instant classic, and quite rightly so. The question was, would – could – the second fic be as good? Would there, since she more usually writes House fanfic, even be a second fic? The answers, in reverse order, are yes, there would; and yes. It is. What makes it even better? [livejournal.com profile] leiascully, who turns out to be as dear a person as she is good a writer, wrote it for me, and I treasure it more than I can say. Gifts only grow with the sharing: enjoy it, as I did.

"I'm not gonna judge you, I just thought I knew you. I thought...I thought I knew you."

Danny's smile was bitter, more of a grimace, and looking at it was like touching broken glass. "Guess not." His face was like a steel vault door, an unbroachable blankness slammed down over something precious.
