10:04 am Faking It by onewayfreak (NC-17)
Fandom: HOUSE M.D.
Pairing: Foreman/Chase and House/Wilson
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] onewayfreak
Author Website: [livejournal.com profile] sexdrugsand

What isn't normal about this night is the fact that Foreman and Chase aren't alone in Chase's bedroom, and while being watched will almost always, understandably, make a person a little more conscious of their performance, there's something notably different when it's not just anyone watching, but your boss, and your boss' best friend.

Why this must be read: Porn, people. Hot, hot porn. With consensual voyeurism. And an unusual pairing as depicted by one of its masters. Writing from Chase’s perspective, [livejournal.com profile] onewayfreak shines the spotlight on Foreman/Chase while House/Wilson takes a backseat to the action (though there are some very hot and in-character H/W moments as well). This focus works marvellously, both within the context of the story—what Foreman and Chase originally meant to be an exaggerated performance slips into real passion as the sex intensifies, and Chase forgets that they have an audience—and in a meta sort of way—giving a rare pair more attention than the fandom’s most popular slash relationship, whose dynamic most of us already know well enough to be able to guess what’s going on behind the tidbits [livejournal.com profile] onewayfreak provides. And did I mention, hot?

Faking It

Oh, and if established relationships for a rare pair isn't your thing, you can always fill in some background at [livejournal.com profile] sexdrugsand and [livejournal.com profile] simmyschtuff, the writing journals of [livejournal.com profile] onewayfreak and his/her Chase/Foreman partner-in-crime [livejournal.com profile] simmysim, respectively.

11:07 am Journeymen by hyperfocused (PG-13/R)
Fandom: SPORTS NIGHT
Pairing: Casey McCall/Dan Rydell
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] hyperfocused
Author Website: Hyperfocused: Poetry, Fics and Random Obsessions

Why this must be read: [livejournal.com profile] hyperfocused is, to my mind, and I hope she won't mind my saying so, typical of a certain breed of SN fan writers – I don't know whether the same sort of thing applies across other fandoms: she consistently turns out good, tight, enjoyable stories which somehow seem to pass slightly under the fannish radar and never quite receive the praise they deserve. In fact, I was all set to rec something more recent when, checking the [livejournal.com profile] crack_van memories, I discovered to my surprise that this, which is my favourite of hers (to date!), hadn't previously been listed. And so I'm making haste to rectify that omission. As for why I like it: I love the imagery of the boys, adrift in the uncertainties of a new, changed relationship, aimlessly riding a night train to nowhere; the changing points of view, the glimpses of the two of them through one another's eyes; the deft, lyrical touches scattered throughout; and, um, the boys having veryhotsex in an alleyway …

He was a work of art, like they hadn't seen at the MOMA, and Dan was having a Casey McCall renaissance.

04:28 pm Upon Me Proved, by Heather Phillips (PG13)
Fandom: DC Comics
Pairing: the Brain/M. Mallah
Author on lj: [livejournal.com profile] snake_easing
Author Website: none, but all fanfiction can be found here.
Why this must be read: Either you're the sort of person who instantly understands why someone would want to read the tender love story between a brain in a jar and a surgically enhanced gorilla, or you're not. If you are: Upon Me Proved. If you're not, I'd urge you to give this a try anyway: it's a bizarre yet tasteful story of unlovable ...people, who find love unexpectedly in impossible places.

04:46 pm Kindred Spirits, by Lillian Wolfe (R)
Fandom: HIGHLANDER: THE SERIES
Pairing: Amanda/Methos, Methos/Miles (an OC) and also hints of Methos/Kronos in the past.
Author on LJ: No idea whether or not she has one--if anyone knows, tell me.
Author Website: Lillian Wolfe’s Index.
Why this must be read:

Methos takes a bad Quickening and seems a bit different to everyone. Shortly after that, (and before things can be straightened out) Methos takes a Quickening on Holy Ground, and is forced to go through every Quickening he has ever taken. Including a particular Horseman. There are quite a few troubles along the way back to sanity, but I refuse to spoil anything. I will say that each Immortal Quickening he’s taken manages to pop up at different times. Also, this story takes place after the author’s other series called The Demons Trilogy. That can also be found on her page, linked above--however, you can read this story without having read the previous.

I think this was probably one of the first Highlander fanfics I read when I entered the fandom. (Shortly after I read Archangel Redeemed.) This is a compelling story that is nearly impossible to stop reading once it gets going.

04:57 pm Rainbow Connection by Giglet (G)
Fandom: POPSLASH
Pairing: Gen (hints of Chris/JC)
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] giglet
Author Website: Giglet's LJ
Why this must be read: Because it's one of the best crossovers EVER and I've never seen it recc'd before anywhere. It's candy-apple sweet and peach-blossom adorable.

"JC didn't talk much about his time in LA. Chris figured that JC had headed out there with high hopes but been worn down and tapped out without making headway into the Industry before finally coming home to his parents. JC didn't like talking about assholes or bad times, and he didn't like losing at anything. So that, Chris thought, was probably why JC didn't talk about the LA years.

It never occured to Chris that maybe JC couldn't talk about it."

07:30 pm Lights Out by Penknife (R)
Fandom: BUFFY
Pairing: none (Giles gen)
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] penknife
Author Website: Penknife to Paper
Why this must be read:

Alone in the dark of night, Giles lets his mind turn to how he could best hurt Angel. His thoughts seem an understandable reaction to a combination of burdens: the shock of Angel's return from hell at the start of season three; the loss of Jenny Calendar, who had been brutally killed by Angelus; and to Giles's frustrating memories of his helplessness under the torture Angelus inflicted on him at the close of season two.

Yet as Giles continues to consider, the associations and connections engendered by his vengeful thoughts drive him to an even darker conclusion of how he might cause Angel the greatest amount of pain.

A rich, dark character piece, one that exposes the troubled intersections of Giles's past and present.

07:30 pm In the Mood by chicafrom3 (PG)
Fandom: TORCHWOOD/DOCTOR WHO
Pairing: Jack Harkness/Toshiko Sato with some allusions to Jack/Doctor, Jack/Estelle, Tosh/Mary, Tosh/Owen
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] chicafrom3
Author Website: I believe all her fic is at [livejournal.com profile] fandomfrom3
Why this must be read:

Because, as the author says, this is the "Captain Jack Harkness" AU that every Jack/Tosh shipper had to write :) No, seriously, because it's a well done version of a cliche from this fandom. The reactions of Jack and Tosh to being stuck in the 1940s are believable and interesting and style is quite lovely.

09:26 pm A Scoundrel's Wisdom by WendyNat (G)
Fandom: STAR WARS: ORIGINAL TRILOGY
Pairing: Gen
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] wendynat
Author Website: SW fanfic tag
Why this must be read: Because there is not enough fic about Lando! Here we have a missing scene from Empire Strikes Back, in the time between recovering Luke from Cloud City, and Lando and Chewie leaving in the Falcon. Luke begins to come to terms with what Vader told him while preparing to find Han and being suspicious of the smooth-talking Lando. Luke gets another lesson about things not always being what they seem, and a tentative new friendship is born. Characterization is perfect, the story is extremely well-written, and anyone who is a fan of both Luke and Lando absolutely must read this fic.
