Fandom: HARRY POTTER Pairing: Cedric Diggory/Hermione Granger Author on LJ: florahartAuthor Website: In MemoriesWhy this must be read: Written for this year's hp_springsmut story exchange, this is a long, plotty alternate universe with a fantastic and novel confluence of magic, memory, and mathematics. In this AU, Harry Potter is having weird dreams where Cedric died during the Tri-Wizard Tournament, and it is up to Hermione and Cedric to discover the truth and stop it from becoming this reality too. I love alternate realities and this is a brilliant example of it. Cedric is simply a delightful POV character, although it is bittersweet getting to see him as a grown up. He is capable and persistent, but isn't a Hufflepuff caricature of plodding along. He approaches everything with a droll sense of humor and can-do attitude that keeps the reader engaged and on the edge of their seat throughout. ( Yeah, in a minute. I want to tell you the rest of it. So I jumped back in, scar be damned, and we were there, staring at each other and trying to think of what to do--well, I figure you were thinking that, too--and then a horrible high-pitched voice, nothing like the one that Voldemort had, once he reformed, said Kill the spare! And Pettigrew did. It was green and bright and never there before, and I couldn’t do a fucking thing but watch you die. Avada Kedavra works fast.. )For Our Allotted Time Is the Passing of a Shadow by Florahart

Fandom: Starsky/Hutch Pairing: Starsky/Hutch Why this must be read: This is from the zine Dangerous Lives, Dangerous Visions 2 and is my favorite story from that zine. It brings back an old adversary in the form of Matt Coyle (from the episode Iron Mike). When they met Coyle, back when they were younger, he gave them a warning. "You'll come to me. When you're older and more tired . . . when the streets have worn you down. Just like Iron Mike did." Neither of them thought that would ever be true, but time has a way of changing things. But the question is, when an act is done purely out of love, is it wrong? How can you condemn a man's actions when they were done in order to protect you? That's the question the boys have to face. "Starsky, no, I never tried to make you look like a fool. I did it for you. To get us off the streets and keep you safe."
The anger came back like a door slamming. "No, don't you tell me that. I don't want to know that . . . to hear that you did it for me. You're a liar . . . hell, I'm a liar. You even made Dobey a liar. I don't deserve this position. It's all based on a lie." Starsky ran both hands through his hair. "I'll have to resign. Shit, I don't know if I'll even have a job when they get a load of this, and neither will you. How could you do this? Did you flip out and I never noticed?"The choices we make, the battles we fight, the world is not black and white. It's all about living in the gray areas. Serve and Protect

Fandom: Starsky/Hutch Pairing: Starsky/Hutch Why this must be read: Hey, look, another Matt Coyle story. What can I say? I like him. This picks up from the tag, where they're playing chess together. Coyle's final warning is haunting Hutch alot. Starsky forgoes the rest of the chess match to get Hutch out of the house, trying to help him work through all the issues that the situation has brought up. They walked in silence until the cigarettes were gone. Starsky lit more before asking. "You're remembering Coyle's words, aren't you."
Hutch nodded, the blond hair reflecting the filtered moonlight. "We will be older and more weary and I'm scared to death we'll call him because we can't fight the battle any other way."They don't know what the future will hold for them, but they do know that they'll have to face it together. No matter what happens, it's better together. Starsky's Law

Fandom: HARRY POTTER Pairing: none Author on LJ: josanpqAuthor Website: tales_of_josan or older website: Josan's WebsiteWhy this must be read: Written after Order of the Phoenix but before Half-Blood Prince, here is a Snape who was vindicated in his spying for the Order, yet is still a pariah among the populace and his coworkers. He retreats to a muggle house since no wizard would sell one to him. As he settles in, his peace is disturbed by other pariahs looking for refuge, namely the Malfoy house elves. The exploration of house elf social dynamics and family structure is great, but it is their relationships with Snape that are illuminating. Snape is as rescued by the house elves as they are rescued by him. I like Snape's weary, just getting through the day attitude and it is showcased wonderfully by the lackadaisical pace of the storytelling. And just when you think you've had enough, then Dobby and the other house elves enter like a breath of fresh air. ( Severus Snape carefully walked over the property whose purchase he was considering. He needed a place to live, now that he had officially left Hogwarts. And thanks to Albus Dumbledore's uneasy conscience, he had more than enough gold in his Gringotts vault to live the rest of his life, such as it would be, in a certain ease and comfort. )A Man of Property by Josan

Fandom: HEROES Pairing: Mohinder/Sylar Author on LJ: hackthisAuthor Website dysfunctionalWhy this must be read: Recently, there's been a spate of Mohinder/Sylar fics; it seems to be gaining in popularity in the fandom and why not? You have your Gentle Idealist in Mohinder and your Charismatic Villain in Sylar and either way, you've got plenty of Pretty. Like most villains, Sylar is an enigma; very little is known about him, his past or his motivations. In this story, hackthis looks out through Sylar's skewed viewpoint and, in doing so, gives us an interesting look in. I really enjoy her take on Sylar; the overlap of thoughts and motivation, the almost claustrophobic density of his overwhelming personality. It's one of those characterizations that feels like canon and if it isn't? It should be. (contains general spoilers for ep 1.18 "Parasite") Laugh? I Nearly Died

Fandom: PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN Pairing: Jack Sparrow/James Norrington Author on LJ: penknifeAuthor Website: Penknife to PaperWhy this must be read: Whatever horrors the afterlife might hold for other men, James felt his own personal definition of hell was being trapped in an open boat with Jack Sparrow. It’s funny, because it’s true. Whereas Sparrington was easily made credible post-CotBP (heck, it was three-quarters of the way to being canon), it’s much more difficult to pull off post-DMC. penknife, though, has the talent to make it plausible, with just the right balance of snark and seething hatred, as Jack and James are forced to work together for survival. I was giggling throughout this story, and it left me with big, silly grin on my face. Adrift

Fandom: WOMEN'S BUSINESS Pairing: None (except for a nonexplicit AU husband) Author on LJ: samhendersonAuthor Website: Samantha HendersonWhy this must be read: What isn't to love about this story? It's a clever series of AUs, riffing on Austen's biographical details and her fiction, as well as adding in dashes of science fiction, fantasy and intrigue. This is an enjoyable and thought-provoking story, especially if you've read Austen's novels, although it's still a good read even if you haven't. Five Ways Jane Austen Never Died

Fandom: HIGHLANDER: THE SERIES Pairing: Methos/Kronos, pre-slash Author on LJ: ciceqiAuthor Website: Blood, Love, And Rhetoric. Why this must be read:This is a very dark and graphic story that shows how an insane Methos met Kronos. Actually, insane is probably an understatement for just how far gone Methos was at this point in time. In the aftermath of a gruesome battle, Kronos arrives, and meets Death. Sleeps With Coyotes perfectly captures the sheer horror of the scene. ( An excerpt ) That Which Suits A Part Infects The Whole.

Fandom: DOCTOR WHO Pairing: the Doctor/Rose (9&10), Jackie, Mickey Author on LJ: castrovalva9Author website: n/a Why this must be read: Rose Tyler doesn't even have her A-levels, but she has her wiles. Bold as brass, she is, what I call a real piece of work. And I should know; I've lived next door to the Tyler flat for seven years, and what I've learned would chill your blood. A beautiful original narrator, wry humor, and discussion of Rose Tyler's virtues for the win. Misconceptions

Fandom: due South Pairing: Fraser/RayK Author on LJ: kristiinthedarkAuthor's Website: unknown Why this must be read:This story takes what (in my opinion) is a fairly tame kink, and turns it into something not quite so tame at all, by giving way to an absolutely scorching interlude. This story offers a Fraser a bit quicker on the innuendo/possibility train than Ray, and a Ray more than happy to reap the benefits!
