Title: Carousel by Mary
Pairing: None
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] monkeycrackmary
Author Website: http://muse.inkstigmata.net/potc/
Why this must be read: I know what you’re thinking: these are three fandoms that really *shouldn’t* go together. Plus, this fic has the same-actor-different-role cliché, which I generally despise. And yet? [livejournal.com profile] monkeycrackmary makes it all work perfectly.

I especially liked the pacing of this fic. For example, cut for story spoilers—but only in the vaguest way possible ) I admire how the author built to that revel with such a sparsity of words.

Oh, and of course Giles and Pearse knew each other.

Title: Can't Trace Time by [livejournal.com profile] legionseagle
Pairing: Owen Harper/Bel Thorne
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] legionseagle
Author website: None I could find
Why this must be read:

Oh god, because the characterization is spot on and...[livejournal.com profile] legionseagle made me like Owen. I dislike Owen, yet in this story I sympathized with him and followed him avidly through 10 chapters. (They're not incredibly long chapters, so don't let that put you off reading.) The grasp of the Miles Vorkosigan universe and the Torchwood universe are fabulous, and this is a truly enjoyable story.

I think it explains Owen a bit without whitewashing the fact that he's a bastard at heart, and I do so love fic that explains something about the characters.

12:22 pm Heroes/Smallville - The Politics of Sacrifice by Scribblinlenore (NC-17)
Fandom: HEROES/SMALLVILLE
Pairing: Peter Petrelli/Lex Luthor, Nathan Petrelli/Peter Petrelli UST
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] scribblinlenore
Author Website: Lenore's Stories
Why this must be read: I suppose for anyone not me Lex wears leather gloves! is really not a good enough reason, so let me try to unscramble my brain enough to tell you about this fic in more concrete terms.

It was written for one of [livejournal.com profile] oxoniensis's Porn Battles, but turned out to be too long to fit in a comment box, so in Lenore's words, "Now it's just porn without the battle!" The conceit's simple enough: Peter will do anything for Nathan. Up to and including seducing Nathan's political rival for blackmail.

The result of such a simple idea is...wow. Dirty and unseemly and mind-bendingly hot. Told from Peter's POV, her Lex is enigmatic and yet wholly familiar. The parallels to *ahem* anyone who might be "Lex's type" are subtly but definitely drawn. And though he never really makes an onscreen presence, Nathan is definitely a third (or is it really fourth?) participant in the sequence.

And did I mention Lex wears leather gloves?? *squeaks* In conclusion: Yay porn!

(Although there is incestuous tension here, there is absolutely no overt incest.)

Pairing: Tim Drake/Sam Winchester (Dean Winchester/OFC)
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] ethrosdemon
Author Website:  Babel: It's not a myth is listed in userinfo, but it 404s
Why this must be read: Tim and Sam have a fair amount in common: both feel like outsiders in their family, both have a carefully cultivated facade of normality, and both know too much about an underworld few normal people will ever understand.

Plus, it's an outsider viewpoint of Gotham, which I'm always interested in.

Pairing: Napoleon Solo/Illya Kuryakin, various m/m non-con
Author on LJ: unknown
Author Website: Anne's Fiction

Why this must be read:

Because Mr. T. gets kneecapped!

Okay, as a descendant of Belfast Irish, I admit it's not exactly a kneecapping. However, for anyone who felt that B.A. Baracus AKA Mr.T.'s fighting style was too WWF to work in the real world (c’mon, I can’t be the only one), prepare to be entertained.

I pity the fool who doesn’t click here. )

Title: Bright Lights Big City by [livejournal.com profile] inlovewithnight
Pairing: Kevin Walker/Dan Rydell
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] inlovewithnight
Author Website: Exaggeration and Blank Verse

Why this must be read:

There has been so much wonderful new Sports Night fiction written in the past few years that choosing just twelve recs in a month is always a weighty – though welcome – task. And crossovers, for some reason, have been coming thick and fast lately. I've come to the conclusion that Sports Night (and specifically Dan Rydell) is one of fandom's little black dresses: suitable for every occasion, and goes with everything.

I have to admit that I know nothing at all about Brothers and Sisters - until I found this fic, which came about via a convoluted process involving Google alerts and, well, stalking, I don't believe I'd ever heard of it at all – and so I can't speak for the accuracy of the Kevin characterisation. The feedback the story's already received does that for me though and, if it's anything near as good as the Danny characterisation, then we can rest assured that it's pitch-perfect. This is an older, slightly harder, post-series Dan, screwed over by the network and potentially facing the end of his career, but still open and giving, kind and warm and sweet - and sexy as hell.

Apparently Rydell had covered enough defeats in sporting events to recognize a total loss when he was in the middle of one. Kevin had to approve of the way he was taking it. Dignity intact, at least.

He also approved of Rydell’s cheekbones, and his eyes, and the way he wore his suit, but that was neither here nor there and Kevin was really supposed to be learning about screwing a guy out of his contract, not thinking about any other form of screwing whatsoever. Not on the company’s time.

But company time ended at six …

Title: Wheels Within by Legion
Pairing: Johnny/Bruce, Jim/Blair
Author Website: Legion's Hidey Hole
Why this must be read:

Johnny Smith's visions show him what he needs to understand in order to save other people. But sometimes, it's his life that needs to change.

Scrambling out of the bed, Bruce picked up a juice glass from the nightstand. "Let me answer the door, then give it a few before coming down, like the knock disturbed you."

Catching him by the wrist, John said, "Hey, what are you worried about?"

That stopped Bruce cold, and for a second his expression was almost agonized. "John...when a preacher's kid rebels, he really rebels. I've done some things that I don't want you get tarred by."

Guessing, but oddly sure of his guess, John said, "You don't have to be in the closet because of me."

Bruce studied him, expression completely neutral for the first time since John had met him. "Not because of you, John. For you."

08:27 pm Dead Tape, by Marguerite (PG) X-Files/West Wing
Fandom: X-Files/West Wing
Pairing: Mulder/Scully
Author Website: Gray Area

Why this must be read:
This story is set post-Three Words, and deals with the bother of coming back from the dead. Marguerite writes both X-Files and West Wing fic, so all of the characters are very well realized and themselves. The story is narrated from President Bartlet's perspective, and it's a great third-person view of Mulder and Scully. The humor is perfect but there's some angst as well. A very satisfying read, even if you're not as familiar with West Wing.

Excerpt:
Bartlet was not in the habit of standing up for guests, but one look at the
heavily pregnant woman was enough to put him on his feet in an instant. She
looked up at him gratefully when he ushered her to the loveseat, but she
insisted on standing until he took the chair opposite her.

He already liked her. From the demure cut of her maternity suit, to the sweep of
her rich, red hair, to the cross she wore at her throat, to the very strength of
her military bearing, he liked her.

It was the guy with her that gave him the crawling willies.

Title: What She Wants by Beatrice Otter
Pairing: Faith/Rodney
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] beatrice_otter

Why this must be read:

Faith post-chosen, and post-Robin, walks into a bar in Denver looking for some quick and easy satisfaction. What she finds is the infamously snarky Atlantean duo out for some enforced leave, and when it comes to taking one home she gets exactly what she wants.

Short, sweet, and sexy. I love the way that Faith exploits and plays into John and Rodney's friendly rivalry.

09:54 pm Farscape/Firefly - Detours: Perdition Redux - R
Category: Crossover
Fandom: FARSCAPE/FIREFLY
Rating: R
Pairing/Major Characters: John Crichton, Malcolm Reynolds
Author on LJ: Unknown

Why this must be read:
This Firefly/Farscape story written by Shan was one of the first crossovers I read after discovering Firefly and it was well worth checking out. Great action adventure, spot on characterization and you'll just smile at all the show specific references that are made throughout. Mal and Crichton collide and there's real chemistry - not the slashy kind here - just a wonderful evolving friend vibe under pressure. Action and explosiveness that are hallmarks of both shows, not to be missed.

Title: Five Reasons Xander Harris Hates Pete Wentz
Pairing: none
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] lovelypoet
Author Website: none / [livejournal.com profile] lovelypoet's fics on LJ
Why this must be read:

Xander Harris would really like if Pete Wentz would stop being "such a whiny emo bastard in public on the world wide web". As if living with fifteen teenage girls isn't hard enough, Xander has to deal with fifteen emotionally topsy-turvy Fall Out Boy-obsessed new slayers, all of whom feel really down whenever Pete posts sad thoughts on his blog.

A very funny look at how Xander, in trying to corral a bunch of charming and persuasive young women, has to deal with one seemingly insurmountable force of pop culture (and winds up getting a personalized autograph in the process).

Pairing: Captain Jack Harkness/Vala Mal Doran
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] minervacat

Why this must be read:

The pairing alone should bring us all screaming in droves. Vala and Jack? Good god how can that be anything but hysterical fun?

The story delivers on the fun, most definitely, but it also brings up the fun of just how maddening time travel can be and how mixed up things can get all the while delivering a fantastically sexy, fun story that's a perfect tribute to both characters.
