12:53 pm Sangria by Revanche (R)
Fandom: NCIS
Pairing: Abby/Kate
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] whereupon
Author Website: N/A
Why this must be read: I'm having a hard time really deciding what it is I like so much about this story. Maybe it's the artless, almost accidental seduction. Maybe it's the way Revanche captured Abby's inner voice exactly the way I hear it in my own head. Maybe it's the poignant last line. Whatever. It's an intriguing little first time, hurt/comfort story that will leave you dying to know what happens next. Unfortunately, Revanche doesn't write NCIS anymore and I think the fandom is poorer for that loss.

She looks up from the computer and sees that Kate's still there, back to her. The bones of her shoulders are sharp and distinct through the thin weave of her blouse and she shakes once, twice. Something's wrong, but Abby's missed it, and she's glad. She doesn't want to get involved.

Fandon: GUNDAM WING (fandom summary)
Pairing: Duo/Trowa, Heero/Duo
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] trixie_chick and [livejournal.com profile] butterflychase
Author Website: trixie's fanfiction

Why this must be read: Because Trixie's Trowa is brilliantly characterized, displaying all the outward taciturnity of his canon behaviour, but with a fabulously funny internal voice.

After the war, a severely depressed Trowa isn't particularly enthusiastic when his therapist suggests that he switch to group counselling sessions---with Duo Maxwell. However, he finds in Duo and unexpected ally, and even a friend.

Fandon: GUNDAM WING (fandom summary)
Pairing: Heero/Duo
Author on LJ: N/A
Author Website: DreadfullyAwry.com

Why this must be read: Because so many GW stories, fun and often surprisingly excellent as they can be, gloss over the fact that all the protagonists are killers.

A truly disturbing story about being a terrorist and what that does to a person. About what it means for Duo, specifically, to be a fifteen-year-old terrorist who enjoys blowing up bases and then goes back to pretending to be an ordinary boarding-school student.

01:33 pm Twilight by One Person (R)
Fandon: GUNDAM WING (fandom summary)
Pairing: N/A
Author on LJ: N/A
Author Website: DreadfullyAwry.com

Why this must be read: Because it's the best Duo backstory you'll ever read. One Person takes some of the things we know about Duo's early life: that he doesn't seem to have, or ever have had, parents, that his friends all died in a plague on one of the L2 colonies, that he was a thief, and spins them out into an amazing story.

Twilight isn't just Duo backstory, though. It's a thoughtful and engrossing picture of what an epidemic, accompanied by a water shortage, would be like on an isolated colony in space. In that sense, it's not just GW fanfic, it's an intriguing original sci-fi story.

You definitely don't need to know the fandom to enjoy this story.

11:02 pm A Sort of Homecoming by Trisse (PG-13)
Fandom: ER
Pairing: Luka/ensemble (stating the main pairing would give too much away)
Author on LJ: none as far as I know
Author Website: http://www.fanfiction.net/u/429126/
Why this must be read:

A luxurious, thoughtful story about Luka's return from the Congo. Like the show, this fic lets all the other characters wander into Luka's arc, affecting and changing him. Trisse manages to keep a large cast in-character and balance them with Luka's recovery. One of my favorite ER fic conventions is making Susan Lewis the warm supportive friend, and "A Sort of Homecoming" utilizes it well. Also featuring a well-imagined family for Luka and Gillian (the woman Luka met in the Congo). Trisse keeps the story's tone harnessed and this makes Luka's inner drama all the more powerful.
