Why this must be read:

The premise is simple: A drunk Ray shows up at the Consulate very late at night and asks Fraser for a very, very big favor. I still remember my reaction when I first read this fic: it was like getting punched in the gut (but, you know, in a good way) and then it was warm and fuzzy and then I immediately scrolled back up to the top and read the story all over again. Unlike most of my recs, this isn't a realistc, plausible story. Instead it's an intense, visceral thrill ride that frankly pushed every one of my trust issue, first time, and angst buttons. Not a long fic (though not really short, either), but man does it have an impact.

Fandom: Due South

Why this must be read:

I'm kind of shocked that this hasn't already been recced, but I'm also grateful because there aren't many long fics in this fandom that haven't already gotten a ride in the van and I was afraid I was going to spend the entire month reccing short stories.

There are so many stories that blame Ray's difficulty with vocabulary on childhood head injuries that it's almost become fanon. Finding the Words shows what a really traumatic head injury can do, and it's not quite as simple as occasionally stumbling over a word. Ray's recovery is long and rich with h/c and realism and his relationship with Fraser is wonderfully complex and immensely satisfying. A beautiful, touching fic.

Fandom: TORCHWOOD
Pairing: Ianto/Owen
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] paperclipbitch
Author Website: None
Why this must be read:

Owen and Ianto hardly have a great relationship in canon, even if there are a few moments inbetween when it seems as if they care about each other to some extent. This story does a great job of including both, the tension and some kind of...tenderness. As the author writes "This runs from outright violence to hatesex to actual fluff." Strangely enough that works. Plus, the bickering is funny.

02:31 pm Synchronicity by Jericho (R)
Fandom: POPSLASH
Pairing: Howie/Nick
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] jericho1
Author Website: Sweet & Low

Why this must be read: This story is one of my favorites when it comes to this pairing. Nick especially is so wonderful here - there's a vulnerability to him that seems very true to life, especially because he hardly ever lets it show. Throughout the story he tries to get over Howie after their split, even by trying to 'find his angels' so to speak, and it's written in such a soft, reflective manner that my heart just goes out to him. Personally I'm a sucker for stories where you can sense how much the characters want each other, even if it's never said, and this story does that so beautifully. It's a sequel to Schism, and while you don't need to read that to follow this story, I'd definitely recommend you do, because it's every bit as gorgeous.

Fandom: BATTLESTAR GALACTICA 2003
Pairing: Tyrol/OC, Tyrol/Sharon (implied)
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] ethrosdemon
Author Website: the biblioteque
Why this must be read:

At 4,000+ words, this fic is a satisfying look into the backstory of Galen Tyrol. We’ll just have to wait and see how the revelations of season 3 and what’s to come in season 4 may change the meaning of this fic, but in many ways those revelations are irrelevant to this view into the life of the Colonies, particularly Geminon, before the Cylons attacked.
