Fandom: THE HISTORY BOYS Pairing: Dakin/Irwin Author on LJ: justholdstillAuthor Website: fanfic tagsWhy this must be read:The author's summary says: "Dakin tries to teach History a lesson, but History ends up teaching him." That's a pretty damn good summary. Irwin and Dakin do get that drink, as per many fics, but there's no romance here, just two guys who are just as fucked up together as they were in canon, and Dakin's so cocky and sure he can rewrite history somehow, but it bites him in the ass every time. It's not a depressing fic, but it's not happy, either, and it's one of the most true-to-life characterizations of Dakin and where he'd wind up after school that I've ever seen. Fandom: YOUNG WIZARDS Pairing: Gen; Nita-centric, full cast of secondary characters. Author Website: myriadwords category; FFN.net profile. Also, I recommend checking out her YW stuff at deviantart, if that's your bag. Author-on-LJ: semiramis_meiWhy this MUST be read: Because it fulfills some of the grim possibilities for Nita that Dilemma only began to explore; because it deals with pretty much the saddest thing I can imagine happening in the books, but is still hopeful; because it is AMAZING. Fandom: Prince of TennisPairing: [Rikkaidai] Sanada Genichirou + Yukimura Seiichi Author: branchficWebsite: Ink Burns, Fanfiction by Branch. Rating: [PG 13] Adult themes, nothing graphic. Why this fic must be read: Very few of the characters in Konomi's PoT universe actually act their age. Yukimura and Sanada, the Captain and Vice-Captain of the Rikkaidai Competitive Tennis team are perfect examples. Their tastes, interests, speech and, most of all, the depth of their involvement are well beyond what most boys would show. They even speak like adults and yet, in their cultural and schoolaged milieu, sexual attraction between them would be, not only forbidden because middle school children are not permitted to date, but quite possibly dangerous for all the opposition and negative attention that they would attract. Given that they can't or don't know how to express it, sublimation seems the only recourse. Branchfic looks at tennis as a form of sexual sublimation, especially with regards to opponents, but the most interesting aspect of the story is how this practice extends beyond tennis and intermingles with other cultural influences, especially with regards to Sanada's sword work and the historical references from which he draws his inspiration. Fandom: Samurai Champloo Pairing: Jin/Mugen, Jin/Mugen/Fuu Author on LJ: debchanAuthor's new fiction (on IJ): http://debit.insanejournal.com/ Why this must be read: After careful consideration of how often he gets the trio into trouble over women (read: every episode), Mugen decides that he and Jin should have sex. Then he has to convince Jin. It's hilarious (and only gets more so when Fuu finds out). The best way I can describe this is Champloo written by the sprit of Aaron Sorkin. You've got banter, you've got male friendship that's really something more, you've got a sassy woman. And, as a bonus, you have *two* first times (hot ones!). Whee! Vidder: Nicky Musical artist: The Servant Pairing: Narrator/Marla/Tyler Vidder on LJ: obsessive24Vidder's website: obsessive24.netWhy this vid kicks ass: God, this is a gorgeous vid. Its editing is so sharp, it just about left me bleeding all over my keyboard when I first saw it. But then I've come to expect that from Nicky, as her work always leaves me going, "Wow!" This particular songvid is my favourite of hers: it reflects the darkness of the source brilliantly, while still retaining the humour, and it just gets better and better with every re-watching. Do yourself a favour and go watch this right now. Cells

Fandom: Ocean's Eleven Pairing: Linus Caldwell/Rusty Ryan Author on LJ: iphignia939Author Website: Get on Board why this must be read: Because this is a sharp, smart look at Linus -- his intelligence, his ability to fade into the background, his keen sense of observation -- and it provides him with a really cool history -- it's all done here and done well, along with a nice look at Rusty and an understanding of the things that bring them together. Fandom: LIFE ON MARS Pairing: Sam Tyler/Mobile Phone Author on LJ: strangeumbrellaAuthor Website: n/a Why this must be read:As a respite after yesterday's rec, I now would like to take you on a journey to the lighter side of the fandom. I really couldn't mention the strangest OTP in the fandom in the overview without reccing at least one fic that features it, could I? Here, strangeumbrella does a stunning job of distilling all of Sam's 'mad' moments into a fic about one man and his love for modern technology. This fic is hysterically funny and at the same time endearing, an absolute must-read! ( Excerpt ) Absence Makes The Handset Grow Fonder

Fandom: EMERGENCY! Pairing: none Author on LJ: unknown Author Website: http://www.geocities.com/toddfe2002/brice.htmlhttp://kmg365.comWhy this must be read:A lot of authors, in an effort to hurt poor Johnny, write him with child abuse in his past. Or worse yet, with a stereotypical Indian father who drinks too much and regularly beats his half-breed son. Not Todd F., who takes a worn-out premise and breaths new life into it with breathtaking details of life on the reservation, parents who aren't cartoon cut-outs of Native Americans, and real, tear-jerking emotions.
