Fandom: STARGATE ATLANTIS Pairing: Sheppard/McKay Author on LJ: of_evangelineAuthor Website: tea for the wayfaringWhy this must be read: I have a fondness for back-on-Earth stories, and this remains one of my favourites. It's more serious than some - Rodney and John are in Toronto, awaiting the results of an inquiry, and this time it's Rodney who's convinced he won't be allowed to return to Atlantis. In fact, he's so positive that everyone has finally turned on him, finally seen all his faults and weaknesses, that he can't see what's right in front of him: namely John Sheppard, patiently being there and waiting for Rodney to notice. It's a lovely story about friendship (and the beginnings of more), and how we truly can be our own worst enemies. Plus there's a chocolate ferris wheel, which always makes me smile. ( Sheppard took a swig as the Leafs goalie blocked a shot. 'Another round? Shouldn't we try to stay a little sober for the shopping we still need to do?' )Read the Story / Feedback the Author: Letter of Credence

Since I missed Crossover Day... Fandom: THE SENTINEL Pairing: Jim/Blair (preslash) Author on LJ: lit_galAuthor Website: http://litgal.brinkster.net/Why this must be read:Jim and Blair run afoul of a rogue sentinel in New York, and end up hauled into Night Court. Judge Harry T. Stone, presiding. lit_gal, as always, provides a good read. And she's got so much cool stuff going on in this story--well, here's a sample: ( Excerpt )Flopping in Public

Fandom: NCIS Pairing: Leroy Jethro Gibbs/Donald 'Ducky' Mallard Author on LJ: leda_speaksAuthor Website: N/A Why this must be read: This is Leda's first Gibbs/Ducky story (and I do hope it won't be her last). It was written for me and Leda really went to a great amount of trouble to make it 'fit' and 'right' - and she succeeded. It's a first time story and its premise has Gibbs applying his gut, urged to do so by Abby, to other areas of his life besides work. Basically Abby plays 'matchmaker' to get Gibbs to see who is right for him - Ducky. And the story deals with how he finally works this out. Leda writes all the characters extremely well, they are utterly believable, she gets an excellent mix of emotions into it - caring, affection, understanding, love, tenderness, humour, to name but a few, and even manages to make me not hate Hollis Mann, who makes a brief appearance. In many ways Gibbs working his way through his feelings and rationalising his life and his behaviour and what he's done is very much like the way he works his way through a case, and it works extremely well. Leda shows how the deep, lasting and intense friendship between Gibbs and Ducky shines through, even before their relationship moves on to another level. ( Extract ) Gut Instincts

Fandom: DOCTOR WHO Pairing: Not really Author Website: Tara LJC's Fanfiction LibraryWhy this must be read:Because the Doctor keeps moving, keeps outliving or outlasting everyone he meets, everyone he travels with, everyone he leaves behind. And somehow keeps going. He was, truth be told, crap at good-byes. Always had been, since the very beginning. The TARDIS knew it and in her own way, took pity on him. Rooms disappeared, or were barren and transformed when he finally set foot in them again. Clothing found its way to the wardrobe, books to the library, and personal effects seemed only to magically appear when he could easily bear the reminders fondly, and without pain.
By the time Vicki had asked where she was meant to sleep, it was simply another door of many.Doors

Fandom: DOCTOR WHO Pairing: Doctor/Jack Author on LJ: casiraficsWhy this must be read:"I can never remember," Jack said finally, his eyebrows drawn, still looking somewhere over the Doctor's right shoulder. "There's just... vague images. Then I wake up in a cold sweat and there's nothing. But it feels like... whatever they did to my head--" He finally met the Doctor's eyes. "Two goddamn years, Doctor."
He stayed quiet.
"And you still trust me," Jack said. "I wonder why."
"I trust what I know."
"You don't know much."
"Neither do you," the Doctor pointed out. "I'd say we're on equal footing."Forgetting the Nightmare

Fandom: DOCTOR WHO Pairing: Rose/OMCs Nine/Jack/Rose Author on LJ: wendymrAuthor Website: WMR on A Teaspoon and an Open MindWhy this must be read:I have a weakness for hurt/comfort, and this is a great story for it. (Although, be warned, it starts off with a description of an assault.) After Rose is raped, both Jack and the Doctor think they know what she needs. Rose disagrees. The Doctor loves her. She has no doubt at all about that. But, despite his displays of possessiveness when other men show any interest in her - and he's only just stopped growling any time Jack lays a finger on her - he's not interested in her in a sexual way. Their relationship isn’t like that. Even though he'll flirt with her from time to time, and they touch all the time, there's a line he won't cross - a line she's very conscious of.
She tried to tempt him across it once, when she talked him into dancing with her, but he very carefully did it all on his own terms, ignoring the looks of invitation she was giving him. She'd even tried to take advantage of his jealousy over Jack to tip her hand, but that hadn't worked either.
If she asks him to make love to her, to help her get over being almost raped, he will withdraw behind those barriers of his quicker than she can say Time War. Oh, he would be kind, would offer alternatives to help her sleep, but all from a paternalistic 'I know better than you what's good for you' approach.
Besides, he is pretty shaken up by what happened to her. She'd noticed that he hadn't touched her when he and Jack rescued her. He'd wanted to, but she'd seen the wariness in his eyes. Had worked out later that he'd been worried that she might be afraid of him.
Jack had no such worries. He'd come to her, laid his hand on her shoulder in a gentle, comforting gesture, reassuring her that she was safe. Completely confident that she'd know she was safe with him.Therapy

Fandom: X-FILES Pairing: Gen, with MSR undertones Why this must be read: I like humorous episodes, so humorous post-eps are frequently my favorites. This is a very funny look at what might have happened immediately post "First Person Shooter." It's got the Gunmen, eavesdropping Scully, and lots to make you laugh out loud. Even if you don't love (or remember) the episode, this is still a fun and entertaining fic! What C18 H24 O2 Can Do to a Man

Fandom: X-FILES Pairing: Gen, Mulder-centric Author on LJ: fromthesabrary and runpunkrunWhy this must be read: Post "Orison," this fic is bleak and torturous and altogether wonderful, despite its attempt to rip out your heart and stomp on it. It's a really blunt, harsh look at the events of Orison, but it's so enjoyable because of its honesty. ( Have a teeny excerpt )Anyone With a Gun

Fandom: Heroes Pairing: Peter/Nathan, Peter/Adam Author on LJ: sparky77Author Website: Why this must be read:There's a lot of fic that explores the dark side of Peter's psyche, but most of them read like, "I hate you, whiny emo-boy, so here, turn evil!" more than anything else. This doesn't. Rather it chills and saddens by turns, so make sure you have something cuddly to cling to afterwards. Or during if you're like me. Essentially, Peter isn't evil. He's a caretaker. Now he's taking care of Nathan and Adam, in a world that seems to be made up of stones and grey skies. Adam is happy. Nathan isn't sure. Cages In All Shapes And Sizes

Fandom: Heroes Pairing: Peter/Claude Author on LJ: guaninAuthor Website: Why this must be read:I admit it, before I saw the light and went M3, I was a Peter/Claude shipper, and what the hell! I still love them. This fic plays with Peter and Claude's dynamic, the one that keeps straddling the line between teacher and student and sparring partners by pulling Peter's mind-reading powers into the mix, stirring some of Claude's orneriness around letting them bounce off each other.
