Fandom: FIREFLY Pairing: Inara/Simon, River Length: c 1800 words Author on LJ: inlovewithnightAuthor Website: Exaggeration and Blank VerseWhy this must be read:Set in the most likely post-movie scenario (the one where an uncaring 'verse brushes aside the temporary irritation), this is Inara, River and Simon, making themselves a place to live. The story is beautifully written, and sparkles with character insights as they make their decisions and settle back into a world governed by civilised rules. Very, very, much worth reading - all clear-eyed and plausibly intriguing. ( an excerpt )A Hundred Shades of Blue

Fandom: PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN Pairing: Will Turner/James Norrington Length: one-shot Author on LJ: penknifeAuthor Website: Penknife to PaperWhy this must be read: Yet another James-on-the- Dutchman fic. Everyone seemed to be composing some variation on this theme, post- At World's End. Again, penknife's prose rises above the rest, as she captures James's voice *perfectly*: James looked up at Will. He looked older than the last time James had seen him, and considerably more imposing. Of course, on that occasion, Will had been in the process of being hit over the head with an oar after repeatedly falling down, which might not have shown off his best qualities. . . . "Beckett?"
"He's dead. Davy Jones is dead, too. I'm the captain of the Dutchman. Elizabeth is the pirate king. Jack is ... Jack."
"And I'm dead," James said. "Wonderful." . . . She had, indeed, been the reason he had gotten himself killed. That and a sense that there wasn't any other option that he would actually enjoy more.Oh, heck, I could just quote the whole thing. Do There Embrace

Hi, this is rositamia and I am behind the wheel for SG-1 this month. I am sorry about the late start, but RL got a little real there for a little bit, but I have some fantastic stories to rec this month, so I hope you'll forgive me. I am a firm believer in OTP, but I hope I have a little something for everyone this month. Fandom: STARGATE SG1 Pairing: due to spoilers, putting this info behind a cut. There is ( het ) and ( slash ) and ( threesome )Length: series; some short, some medium. Author on LJ: ivorygates and synecdochic Author Website: Venus in Furs and two gates of sleepWhy this must be read: A direct quote from one of the authors: ninety-six thousand words' worth of stories about Lt. Col. Cameron Evangeline Mitchell (retired), JD Nielson, and Daniel Jackson. It's a universe about sex, and love, and self-identity, and disabilities both physical and mental; it's about the intersection and disjunction of sexual attraction, physical intimacy, and love; it's about learning what you can accept from and what you can offer to the people you love. (Oh, and it's about porn, too. Did I forget to mention that?) And it is all this and just so much more. This story made me laugh, made me cry, made my mouth go dry. I love the story that inspired this: take these broken wings. They took the original starting point of Cameron and JD meeting and wrote it with Cameron being a girl. And since I couldn't talk about it without spoiling, ( go here for the rest ) This was an emotional roller coaster for me, worth every single minute I spent reading to get to the end. This is definitely a story to remember. mezzanine

Fandom: X-FILES Pairing: Mulder/Scully UST Author on LJ: Unknown Author Website: On GossamerWhy this must be read:MotelFic is like the crack of X-Files fandom. It usually isn't very satisfying, but somehow you always want more. Occasionally, though, there comes a story that you remember. This is one of those. It has great use of detail, great characterization, and a little bit of romance without going over the top. She shouldn't have been surprised that the water was cold.
She was in a shitty shower in a shitty motel in some God-forsaken town someplace in the Midwest. Ohio? No. That wasn't right.
It was one of those long days where the only clue as to her final resting place was the area code on the 1970-circa phone bolted to the nightstand. She strained her memory. 219. Where was 219?The Games We Play

Fandom: DC COMICS Pairing: Babs Gordon (Batgirl/Oracle) Length: short character piece Author on LJ: dragonbat2006Author Website: http://dragonbat2006.livejournal.com/tag/fanfictionWhy this must be read:Because this fic is a well-written character study that shows us what was going on in Barbara Gordon's head at one of the most critical moments of her life. Babs Gordon was the first Batgirl; she eventually quit on her own without being forced out. Not long after, Joker decided to go after her father Jim Gordon the police commissioner; Babs opened the door to the Joker unsuspectingly, got shot (she lived, but was paralyzed from the waist down), and decided to turn herself into cyber-guru Oracle, tech and computer go-to girl for the whole bat-family. But she'd decided to leave the heroing business, and certainly she'd gotten a hard lesson in just what the collateral damage for standing up to Gotham's crazies could be. What made her go back, then of all times? Esther-Channah shows us, in the process giving us a look at a strong woman who makes her own choices and is not going to let any tragedy, even her own, destroy her. On the Cusp
