Why this must be read:

Syntax is a still-active writer who has been sadly under-recced here at [livejournal.com profile] crack_van - I'll do my best to fix that!

The relationship between Mulder and Maggie Scully was ambiguous on the show, and it's portrayed in many different ways in fic. This vignette, which takes up Mrs Scully's POV, doesn't go to either extreme - she doesn't hate Mulder, but he's not her long-lost son, either - and I think it is a measured and insightful look at the ambivalent feelings Maggie Scully probably has about Mulder. It's definitely worth your time.

08:27 pm Jeeves Lends a Hand by Jane Davitt (R)
Fandom: JEEVES & WOOSTER
Pairing: Jeeves/Bertie Wooster
Length: 1567 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] janedavitt
Author Website: Jane's Stories
Why this must be read:

Anyone attempting smut in Bertie Wooster's voice has their work cut out for them. The Wodehouseverse is in general so innocent one sometimes doubts sex exists at all past kissing and possibly a little heated knee-fondling, and Bertie is generally seen as the quintessential little lamb lost in the woods. It's one of the great joys of slashing these characters that the energy which in canon seems to be sublimated into cocktails and crisply knotted ties can be re-diverted right back where it really seems to originate. But there is, still, an inevitable challenge with language and point of view.

Which is exactly why this little parody is so deliciously, painfully hilarious.

10:24 pm Our Fair Share Of Abuse by secretlybronte (R)
Fandom: DUE SOUTH
Pairing: Benton Fraser/Ray Kowalski
Length: 10,500 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] secretlybronte
Author Website: none
Why this must be read: Because [livejournal.com profile] secretlybronte has a special touch with Ray Kowalski and this fic showcases her abundant skills. She has the ability to capture the complex personalities of the characters and the universe they inhabit, presenting it in a unique perspective.

At the heart of [livejournal.com profile] secretlybronte's talent is her love of Ray Kowalski and it shows in every careful detail that she uses to bring him to life. She shows him as a man, as a cop, as half of a partnership. She shows us characteristics we don't normally associate with Ray. She shows us a man who is content to make it through another day with his parter at his side. She shows us love.

Our Fair Share Of Abuse is a meaty casefic, long and complex, following Ray on the trail of a rapist that's terrorizing the public parks of Chicago. We watch as Ray does what he does best: interrogate suspects, chase leads, run into dead ends, follow his instincts.

It's also a story about relationships, about romance, tangible and heartwarming. This Ray and Fraser are real—they argue, they snipe, they work through their problems as best they can. Their partnership is tight, solid. And a wonder to see.
