Why this must be read:

The main word for this two-part story is "Adult". Yeah, there's boy-hijinks, but I mean how the author presents to us, first and foremost, a story of men - virile men who feel relationship's pang as they struggle with sexual attraction, competition, and selflessness.

And, oh, there's quite a bit of struggling against each other's bodies, so your lurid little desires can just sit back and get ready for a hot, epic love story - one that's set in an adventure worthy of a comic-book series.

Excerpt from the start of Triptych:

Sparks flew as the metal shell was cracked. A hideous metallic scream rose up from the creature along with a plume of black smoke. Lex sat back in his chair, smiling. Superman had done it again. His audio reception caught the sound of a cheering crowd as they watched the film somewhere on the streets below.

The red winking light pulsed once. That was all it took. It struck Superman in the chest and dislodged him, forcing him to the surface of the roof where he lay momentarily stunned. Above him, the scorpion-thing wavered on legs suddenly too weak to hold itself up, and it continued to scream as flames shot up from the hole in its back. Whether it knew what was happening to it on some sort of conscious level, or if there was something in its programming that lent to it, the world would never know, but it made one last strike against its enemy.

High above its body, flashing in the bright noonday sun, its tail rose to its full length. Then, with the speed of a lightning strike, the tail lashed downward, past the dying body toward its adversary. Superman saw it coming and scrambled backwards, but the trajectory changed swiftly to match his movements. Lex stood up, his eyes widening.

"No!"

The spike drove deep, through flesh and bone, down into the concrete and steel of the bank building's roof. Lex caught a glimpse of Superman's shocked expression and heard the scream before the view was obliterated by the creature exploding.

09:03 am HEART OF A MONKEY KING by car-jack [NC17]
Fandom: Saiyuki
Title: Heart of a Monkey King.
Pairing: [Gensoumaden Arc] Sanzo/Goku
Author: Car Jack [livejournal.com profile] car_jack
Website: None
Status: WIP. Incomplete. 7 parts.
Rating: NC 17.

Why this fic must be read:

Lay out the cards on this table: I'm not a Sanzo/Goku shipper, personally, so I felt a little odd and presumptuous delving through archives to find something which I thought was a well-written and quintessential representation of this pairing. It isn't that I have some of the problems with Goku's apparent young age, either. His character is over 500-years-old, easily the oldest of the entire Ikkou even in a fandom where age is measured over eons of lifetimes, since that doesn't take into account how long he was imprisoned under Mt. Gogyo before being presented to Kanzeon Bosatsu. There are many fantastic writers who ship Sanzo/Goku, so it wasn't difficult to find good stories or stories that excite readers about the fandom, and I will direct attention to some of those later. This piece is incomplete, and that's what I had a problem with in terms of presenting it as a representative sample. But ... this story is just that good.

Car Jack has the firmest grip on the characters that I've ever read. Her Sanzo is amazing, perfectly voiced: not sentimental, not noble; egotistical and crabbed as hell, but not cruel; in fact very caring in his cranky, twisted way. Goku is youthful, enthusiastic, straightforward and unabashed. The story is funny as hell, but also touching. It doesn't need to be finished in the sense that, even if it were to end where it ends now, it is still the best read I've enjoyed in this ship. I hope you will, too.

Pairing:Pete/Patrick
Author on lj:[livejournal.com profile] longtime_lurker
Why this story must be read:

It's time for me to rec a Pete/Patrick, so I decided on one of the lovliest, most bittersweet stories this pairing has to offer. Patrick and Pete have grown old together and are still in love, many years down the road. It's about a perfect day and hoping that they never, ever end. Also, the idea of Pete breaking his hip skateboarding at nearly 70 is just too funny not to mention.

Their house does not, in fact, have an actual white picket fence. But it does have a wide front porch that looks out over a soft green expanse of grass, mismatched curtains in the windows, a doormat that reads "COME BACK WITH A WARRANT," and three hideous pink lawn flamingos that Pete adores. And it's always full of music.

This morning it's old-school punk and Motown on the antique record player. (Pete and Patrick prefer that thing to any of the latest microtechnology, and just pray that it doesn't break: it's impossible, even with their money, to find replacement parts anymore.) Pete plays with their Schnauzer, Coltrane, in the living room, while Patrick gardens out back. He's singing along to the record, and it drifts in through the open window as he tends to the flowers and herbs with quiet, methodical care, finally coming in grubby and happy with dirt caked on his hands and elbows and knees.

(Pete's knees are shot - moshpits and crowdsurfing, high-school soccer and Porn Ninja, all took their toll. "But hey," he tells friends, "at least I've still got my hair." At which point Patrick, who's mostly bald under his omnipresent hat, sticks an elbow in his ribs every time.)
