Why this must be read:

Author's Summary: Sam and Dean follow the ghost of Tim Horton through a variety of Tim Horton's coffee shops along the 401 in Southern Ontario

As a proud Canadian, I couldn't let the month go by without reccing this fic. For those who don't know, Tim Hortons is a coffee franchise that is bigger than Starbucks in Canada, they are literally on almost every corner. Tim Horton was a Canadian Hockey player who started the franchise and was killed in an accident, but now for some reason he's haunting his own restaurants. Good Canadian style humour and a Canadian spin on the show. (Which is fun as the show is filmed up here after all)

So go read!

Fandom: DUE SOUTH
Pairing: Benton Fraser/Ray Kowalski
Length: ~6,000 words

Why this must be read: I love this story. This was my fic from the due South Seekrit Santa fic exchange and I cannot rec this enough. (The following is from my original rec/review of the story back in December)...

"Guns Don't Kill People" illustrates the imperfections of Ray and Fraser as individuals, as well as the rough edges of their imperfect relationship. They are partners, they are more than partners and the love they have for each other shines through. Sometimes love is not enough. By the end of the story, Ray and Fraser are just as broken as before, but are now more aware what needs to be worked on, what needs to be repaired, for their relationship to survive.

Ray's uncertainty and hope ring so true to me that it took my breath away, as did Fraser's emotional detachment and his inability to cope with his issues.

I loved this story because it did not tie everything together with a pretty red bow at the end. I loved Ray's voice - straight forward, smart and scared. I love how well he knows Fraser, and how well Fraser knows him. I loved the fact that sometimes they take their anger to bed. I love how afraid Fraser is of letting Ray know what's going on, when that's the one thing that might save him. I loved that Fraser uses 'honestly' when he's lying, and Ray knows it. I loved Ray taking control away from Fraser to get him to talk, to try to express what he's feeling.

A tiny taste... )

Why this must be read:

Hm-m-m-m... a tryst between the Man of Steel and the billionaire bald Kansas governor?

[Lex] puts his hands in his pockets and breathes out impatiently, shifting on his feet.

Several things seem to happen simultaneously. There's a whoosh, the door closes, and Superman pops into existence in front of Lex, his pose resembling that of the Oscar statuette.

Lex, unfazed, raises his eyebrows. "What was so important I had to leave the office in the middle of the day?"

Superman unfolds his arms and grabs Lex by the shoulders. He bends his head and kisses Lex furiously. Lex's hands fly up to grasp Superman's arms and his head tilts back. The elegant line of his skull is silhouetted against the light from the bedside lamp.

Lex's mouth is shiny and already swelling when Superman releases him.

Tony is really good at fooling himself sometimes. I can see that. I like Kate; sometimes that's hard to say in a Gibbs/DiNozzo story. And hot!

Why this must be read:

Engaging original characters. I like how the others come to appreciate Tony more and realize how much Tony actually does. I'm a Tony girl. Everyone should love him as much as I do. :-) I especially like how Gibbs goes through the realization. I like how the details bring this story to life. And it's very, very hot.

Why this must be read:

This is a lovely, character-driven story about a rainy night, Jack, and Tosh. Tosh's POV is spot on:

"You missed it while you were... away?" Toshiko asked cautiously, abruptly awake. Jack liked to project an image of utter openness, a bright sheen of flirtation and flash, but she had long ago realised that it was all surface, an armoured carapace that covered something deep and dark and as frightening as it was fascinating. She liked Jack, would trust him with her life, but after four years she couldn't honestly say that she knew him. Four years and she didn't even know his real name....

"Yeah," he said quietly. "I missed the rain. Missed the feel of it, the smell of it, the taste of it.... Just not as much as I missed you guys." He smiled sadly, as if at remembered loss. "But, that's done now. I'm back here. Where I belong."

    Why this must be read:

A great Daniel Jackson story. Much like a five things fic, it deals with things that have happened to Daniel, by dealing with things that never happened to Daniel. And our favourite archaeoligist is a great candidate for this kind of fic, because his whole life is about the almost, about searching, the things that slipped out of his grasp. In this story, the author really conveys all of that, in a haunting way. And the whole thing is told through phone calls he probably never recieved, but might have, and phone calls he definitely never recieved, but we all wish he had.

Doctor Jackson. Uh, hi, this is Jonas Quinn. Sam said she sometimes calls your voice mail and I thought since I was using your office, you wouldn't mind. Oh, your fish are okay. I mean, one of them died, but I got a new one and Nyan feeds them when I'm off-world. It's been, it's been weird here but exciting and, you were right – the universe does make my world seem really small.

Teal'c's pretty awesome and Sam's been nice and I don’t think Colonel O'Neill likes me very much but Sam said I shouldn't worry about that.

    Pairing: Sam Carter/Cameron Mitchell

    Why this vid kicks ass:

Well, it's almost Friday. The memories promise me that I have never recced this before, but I feel a bit puzzled by that. Because I love it. Well, mainly I love Sam and Cam, but this vid captures every single moment of *why*, all the little touches and giggles and smirks that don't really happen, to either of them, with anyone else. The editing is great, and the soundtrack is perfect, all angsty and wistful, yet set to pop so catchy you barely notice how sad the lyrics are. In fact, if Cam Mitchell was a song? this is exactly the kind of song that he would be.

maybe you were shot down in pieces
    maybe I slipped in between

    Why this must be read...

I have rec'ed [livejournal.com profile] p0wdermonkey's work before, she's one of my favorite writers, having a firm grasp on the combination of adventure, humor, fantasy, angst, and down-to-earth nautical saltiness that makes up the best PotC fanfic. Once again, she's topped herself with her recent offering, Tall Ship Tales, a series that gives us her take on Jack's backstory. The "prequels" involve Jack's conception and birth, and the five main tales, Jack's life from his pov, are absolute hilarious (and sometimes horrifying) perfection! Don't miss...
