04:39 am Floater and Pop-Fly by maaaaa (NC-17)
Fandom: THE SENTINEL
Pairing: Jim/Blair
Length: short and sexy
Author on LJ:  [livejournal.com profile] ma_aaaa
Author Website: at Artifact Storage Room 3
Why this must be read:   Because maaaaa is shy and blushes when her work is recced ::sends smooches to maaaaa::  AND they are excellent stories.

So much writing is happening at LJ communities, such as Sentinel Thursday, Give and Take, Secret Santa and others. It’s easy to overlook them if they aren’t posted elsewhere. Floater was an entry in last year’s TS Ficathon and it’s a beauty. Maaaaa likes to write short stories (this is about 2500 words) so she’s very skilled at getting to the heart of the matter succinctly.   Seen through Jim’s eyes, it covers memories of a magical summer with his cousin Rucker more than twenty years before and weaves them into the present where he and Blair are gloriously happy.

Hot off the press from this year’s Ficathon is the companion piece Pop-Fly. It covers a significant summer for Blair and how the skills he learned then are integrated into his current existence with Jim.  Another joyful slice-of-life story from this talented writer.

04:09 pm The Beginner's Guide to Tightrope Walking by Kel (PG)
Fandom: THE X-FILES
Pairing: Mulder/Scully
Length: Novella?
Author on LJ: No
Author Website: Author's page at Gossamer.
Why this must be read:

Kel is one of my favorite authors in The X-Files fandom. She writes superb dialog, her plots are tight, her characterizations are excellent, and her stories are in turn funny and suspenseful. I would recommend anything by this author; since this latest was just posted in April I get to do the honors here. Making his third appearance in a Kel fic, FBI agent Jerry Luskin may be the best original XF fanfic character I have ever read. In this story he has retired from the FBI, hung out his shingle as a PI, and (gulp) hired Fox Mulder as an investigator. As Jerry will soon find out, you can take Mulder out of the FBI, but you can't take him out of the game. Here is a snippet of dialog from the story's opening:

07:39 pm The Annual UNIT Picnic by Primsong (G)
Fandom: DOCTOR WHO
Pairing: None
Length: 3521 words
Author on LJ: unknown
Author Website: Primsong's fics on Teaspoon
Why this must be read:It's really amusing (by which I mean funny, just not laugh out loud funny). And it's just typical of that era with the way the characters react to each other and the situation. An excerpt is going to show how good this is far better than I can explain it.

07:43 pm let's get these teen hearts beating by imogenedisease and somewhatdeluded (NC-17)
Fandom: BANDOM (Fall Out Boy/Panic! at the Disco)
Pairing: Joe Trohman/Spencer Smith
Length: ~100,000 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] imogenedisease and somewhatdeluded
Author Website: imogenedisease's fic tag
Why this must be read:

This story, pairing Fall Out Boy's guitarist, Joe Trohman, with Spencer Smith, the drummer for Panic(!) at the Disco, begins with a lot of sex between two boys, one twenty years old, the other seventeen. A lot of sex. A lot of really hot sex.

If you actually need more reason than that to read it, here goes: this story starts out as, essentially, a string of PWPs. The PWPs are very nearly Any Two Guys--there's no especial reason from canon to pair Spencer and Joe, though we do know they know each other through their respective bands. But as the story unfolds, we watch Joe and Spencer fall into a relationship rather than just into bed, and watch them grapple with the inequities built into that relationship--between a seventeen-year-old and a twenty-year-old, between a boy whose band has hit it big and a boy whose band is still on the brink. Hot sex continues throughout, however, as does the goofy spectacle of Joe's incredibly oblivious bandmates.

09:34 pm Small Fandom Overview: Ace Lightning
Ace Lightning is an obscure YA television show with a small (but tenacious!) fandom into teh crack it offers. This overview has many spoilers--proceed with caution! Canon Sources is where to get the material.

Screencaps mostly courtesy of [livejournal.com profile] sapphiresilver and [livejournal.com profile] moordryd_rules. Note: rather image-heavy! (Click on the images to see larger versions.)

Plot Overview:

I couldn't limit myself to one summary, so I offer three:

Summary #1: Superheroes land in a small American town. Predictable chaos results.

Summary #2: Questions about humanity and the nature of reality combine with some good old-fashioned debunking of clichés. Canon necrophilia results.

Summary #3: Characters from a popular videogame mysteriously appear in the real world. A young teenager, Mark Hollander, is forced to help them and become a hero himself. Associated relationships are brief, violent and/or probably doomed.

Fanfic Recs:

More recs are to come later! For a nostalgic view, I'll start off with one of the earliest fics written in the fandom.

Dirty Tricks, by Sparx-007.

Fandom: Ace Lightning
Pairing: None
Length: 2150 words

Why this must be read: It's a simple, self-contained short story that has many canon elements. Many kids' fandoms don't get it nearly so good with their first fics; I was delighted when I first saw an Ace Lightning section existing on ff.net, with this fic and a couple of others just waiting to be adored. Short, sweet, and recognizably Acefic.

Mark's cousin is kidnapped by Lord Fear...

And to balance out the old fic, some new fanart by [livejournal.com profile] rodentnetworks.

Why this must be viewed: bright, expressive, and well-drawn, these artistic reproductions of the CGIs are just plain amazing. You can find Lord Fear and Dirty Rat at her website gallery here (no direct linking available); and here's also a very nice sketch with a Fear/Lady Illusion pairing. (All safe for work.)

10:52 pm all you zombies, by Dorcas (PG)
Fandom: LIFE ON MARS
Pairing: Sam/Annie
Length: 1,363 words.
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] dorcas_gustine
Author Website: fic: lom tag at her journal.
Why this must be read:

Spoilers for 2x08.

It has to be said, [livejournal.com profile] dorcas_gustine is one of my very favourite Life on Mars writers and it was actually very difficult trying to decide which story to recommend first, but I eventually went with the one that springs to mind most often when I think of her work. This is an effective and chilling story that comments on the ending to Life on Mars in a fascinating way.
