Why this must be read:The whole thing's so amusing. The set-up is that Harry takes Sarah out to a posh seafood restaurant for dinner and won't tell her why. The reason, once it emerges is amusing (yet strangely logical). Then the way Harry acts over dinner is amusing too. But what really sells it is the prose, an example of which follows.

Why this must be read:

Ending the tour of bandom fuck-or-die/sex pollen stories with an almighty bang, this story takes the sex pollen scenario and extends it over a period of time during which things get more and more fucked up. The use of POV in this story is amazingly well done--what characters know, understand, and believe about each other and what's going on is really perfectly portrayed, in the midst of lots and lots of hot sex. As with any sex pollen story, consent is somewhat dubious, and this story plays that out to the hilt, and then - my personal favorite thing! - it deals with the consequences.

Why this must be read:
"Crate them up."

Gil Takei wasn't a bad man. Sure, Mal Reynolds had crossed him up and cost him a lot of money, but that didn't mean Gil was going to shoot him or torture his crew or even blow up his ship. (Although he had considered that last one.)

Nevertheless, Gil felt it was necessary to in some way demonstrate to Mal that he was unhappy about their situation.

Posting him back to his ship was not only a sufficiently pointed but basically humane solution, it was also damned funny.

Yes it is! In addition to the funny, what's also great is the character interaction between each of the 3 pairs that are cooped up together. River and Jayne are particularly amusing.

Why this must be read:

What is it that makes a person who they are? Is it memory? Is it environment? Is it the choices they make, this versus that? Is it the people around them, who they live with and work with day to day? As the Cylon/person/woman who will one day become Athena reflects on the things that have led her to this certain time and place, the lines between who she is and who she (sort of) was become both blurred and more pronounced. Is Galen the ghost here? Is Helo? Is Boomer? Or is it perhaps Sharon herself?

Ghost

Why this must be read:

They’ve both moved on since that Fourth of July.

A post-series conversation; understated--and encapsulating a possible future. Mellow, bittersweet, lucid. I choose it as a great example of [livejournal.com profile] scarab_dynasty's work; sharply executed, saying a lot in relatively few words.

Fandom: THE SENTINEL
Pairing: Jim/Blair
Length: 108k
Author on LJ:  [info]fluterbev
Author Website: http://fluterbev-fic.dreamwidth.org/

Why this must be read:     Although Bev writes great angsty fic that often put Blair and Jim in peril, she also writes a beautiful and realistic love story.

After the series ends, Blair leaves Cascade and sets up a new life in Ireland.  He and Jim have remained friends, but it’s been five years since they’ve actually seen each other. To Blair’s surprise, Jim accepts his invitation to visit during the Christmas holiday just as Blair has moved into a new home. . .

~*~*~

Once inside, Blair showed Jim to his room and, while the other man took a shower, busied himself getting a blaze going in the huge fireplace. Then, luxuriating in the growing warmth and homely scent of peat smoke, he set a light under the pan of homemade soup he’d cooked earlier. Garlic bread went in the oven as Jim emerged from the bathroom, nothing but a towel wrapped casually around his hips, as he walked unselfconsciously toward his room to get dressed.

Blair grinned. How very like old times that was. And boy, he thought, eyeing his friend’s muscular physique. Jim still had it, the dog.

~*~*~

Bev’s knowledge of all things Irish really gets a chance to shine here. I like the way these men were able to re-connect despite the hard knocks to their friendship, despite personal tragedies, despite distance and the passage of time. There are some regrets, but not the guilt-driven paralyzing ones you find in some stories. There’s hurt too, but not physical – no bullets or kidnappings here.  Just a little sadness and a few hurt feelings as they misstep a little while they learn to dance together again.

Bev has written other stories in her “Irish Saga” series, which you can find at her site. The latest one was posted just last month and answers the question, “Just how far will Jim go for love of Blair?” (the answer: pretty far!). Read ‘em all!
