05:04 am The Flower Power Affair by Jean Graham (G)
Fandom: THE MAN FROM UNCLE
Pairing: gen
Author's Website: Jean's UNCLE page
Why it should be read:

It almost goes without saying that I'm a huge fan of Jean's work. She writes plausible, perfectly paced and engaging plots with some really fun OCs. Her Napoleon and Illya are the cool, dryly witty professionals with a quietly thoughtful streak. She evokes the time period so well; you definitely won't find misplaced attempts at "groovy" slang here! The series itself was ambivalent towards the flower power youth that largely made up its fan base; although the extensive rounds of appearances by the actors and flood of print promotion sought to secure their devotion, the portrayal of youth in the episodes is less than flattering - just look at "Cap and Gown." But for all their follies, these idealists are not simple innocents, as Illya learn.

06:27 am The Infinity Affair by Bill Koenig (G)
Fandom: THE MAN FROM UNCLE
Pairing: gen
Author's Website: Bill's Timeshifted Universe
Why it should be read:

We do have male authors in this fandom. Really! The imminently knowledgeable Bill Koenig's works are written as if MFU was being broadcasted today, but he includes plenty of canonical and intertextual references to integrate the series' roots into the present day. "Come With Me to the Casbah Affair" was originally meant to bring back Colonel Hubris, but unfortunately Victor Buono wasn't able to reprise the role. Koenig writes a convincing, entertaining revival epic of this memorable and highly underrated THRUSH villain again, and again, and again...

10:34 am One Week (Is All It Takes), by Taurenova (NC-17)
Fandom: LIFE ON MARS
Pairing: Sam/Gene
Length: 8000 words.
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] taurenova
Author Website: [livejournal.com profile] fandomatemylife
Why this must be read: This is one of my favourite Sam/Gene stories. I love the progression, I love the voices. [livejournal.com profile] taurenova's Gene is totally spot on and her voices all round are fantastic. The thing I love about this story, and in fact, all of [livejournal.com profile] taurenova's Sam/Gene stories, is that she writes about the difficulty the characters have connecting as well as the fantastic connection and dynamic they have.

05:14 pm Way of the Witch by HonorH (PG)
Fandom: HIGHLANDER
Pairing: none
Length: One Shot
Author Website: http://www.geocities.com/Area51/Saturn/5006/

Why this must be read: Most writers portray Cassandra as a rather bitchy villianess or a victim, desperate for revenge. HonorH shows us a ruthless immortal woman, who does what's needed to survive in a world not kind to women. Cassandra's POV shows she can/does somewhat respects Methos... at least, as a rival in the Game.

05:15 pm Welcome to the Neighborhood by Ambler (PG)
Fandom: POPSLASH
Pairing: GSF
Length: 2,578
Author on LJ: not that I know of
Author Website: none
Why this must be read: Joey moves into an overly friendly neighbourhood, and GSF-y wackiness ensues. This story is full of cliches and character stereotypes, but in that fun, over-the-top, self-conscious way. The perfect story for when you need something fun and light to quickly make you smile.

Rating is guestimated, once again as the author doesn't list one.

Fandom: DC COMICS
Pairing: Bruce Wayne
Length: one-shot
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] mjules
Author Website: LJ Community [livejournal.com profile] whiskeycoffee is where fic is stored.
Why this must be read:

I recced a fic earlier in the month that I enjoyed because of the pure brilliance of the "normal" Bruce it gives. I love this story for the exact opposite reason, as it gives a Bruce is obviously falling down into a pretty deep spiral, but trying to stay afloat. It's Batman Begins Bruce (with lots of comics canon squished in if you're familiar with it), which makes that fall all the more bittersweet.

It's also wonderful because it gives an entirely different twist on typical socialite that is associated with the women who surround Bruce Wayne. I could truly read entire stories about the original character here - she's strong, knows "Brucie" is full of crap, and recognizes that he would be far more suited for her friend Selina than any run of the mill socialite, no matter how much he might protest to the contrary.

Bruce nodded, tucking the name away in his mind. He wondered if his stories of hell were what had reminded April of her friend, and whether it was lying or hell itself that Selina Kyle had in common with him. Either way, it would be interesting, he felt sure.

No matter what fandom I'm reading in I always love H/C fics. The Harry Potter fandom has some of the best ideas for H/C around. This one has a curse and a solution that is well written and that fits in with 'the power the dark lord knows not'. Its a very moving story between Harry and Severus, with the added touch of the Wizarding World standing behind its savior for once.
