09:18 am My Friendliest and Rubicon by GreenWood Elf (PG-13)
Fandom: PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN
Title: My Friendliest and its sequel Rubicon
Length: 50,000 words, combined.
Pairing: Beckett/OFC
Author: GreenWood Elf
Author on lj: [livejournal.com profile] celticbard76
Why this must be read: Beckett's personal life is explored through a series of letters between himself and his wife, Anne. The author has a good grip on the epistolary style of writing, and has clearly researched the genre well. This research has also bled into the prose, which is replete with rich details of eighteenth century life. The suspense of the work is quietly directed and is handled with a delicate, subtle richness.

Length: 607 words

Why this must be read: I love the idea of this and I adore the execution; it’s written in first person, but it sounds so much like Sam that it isn’t at all jarring. This short story deals with time and paradoxes, but is really about Sam’s identity.

Because the vidder community has some unique ownership issues, it’s important that reccers be extra careful when making vid recs. Depending on the vidder’s preferences regarding public access to their work, please link your rec in the appropriate manner:

1. If the video is publicly accessible, direct link to the web page the vid is linked on, or if it’s the vidder’s request, to the HTML splash page of their site. or…

2. Link to the site with instructions on acquiring the password, if the site is protected – do not reveal the password yourselves. or…

3. Provide contact info for the vidder if their vids are only available privately (tapes, dvd-R’s, collections, etc.).

Do not:
  • Hotlink, i.e. link directly to the video file rather than the webpage.
  • Re-upload videos that a vidder has removed from the web.
  • Delay in removing a vid rec if requested to do so by the vidder.

    Thank you!

    Why this must be read
As you can probably tell from my recs this month, most of my favorites came from pre HBP. Thats not to say I don't like recent fic, just that the ones that stick out to me are older. With a few exceptions, this being one of them. I like DragonLight, her Paradox of Existance (which was recced earlier) is amazing, but this story stands on its own to me,not because of that, but because one of her characters, not really an original character so to speak, but one outside of the normal HP fandom.

Harry smiled. The fact that William had not flinched in the slightest as Hedwig swooped down onto his arm while they were having dinner impressed him. "It has to be important, or she wouldn't have interrupted."

"And what are you doing that is so important?"

"Planning to take over the world, of course."

William smirked. "Then I want the Caribbean back. Lovely spots for holiday."

Harry's eyes flew over the words, stopping when they reached the end, but not raising them. Absentmindedly he gave a piece of meat from his plate to Hedwig and took off.

"Well? If it's so important that an owl swooped in, I want to know."

    "It's a summons."

"And whom, besides myself, has the authority to summon my Cross?"

    Why this must be read
Maggie's stories are always fun to read, with stories that draw you in and have lots of humor. The way she writes the relationship between Harry and Severus is great, and their interactions with friends and family really make her stories some of the classics in the snarry fandom

    Fandom: EARTH: FINAL CONFLICT
    Pairing: Liam/Zo'or
    Author on LJ: unknown
    Author Website: http://www.fanfiction.net/u/161199/Adnesle
    Why this must be read:

I always always impressed with the way Adnesle wrote, for a non-native English speaker. Over the course of her writing, she slowly gained familiarity with English, and her comprehension improved accordingly. I will warn you that her lack of English profiency means the writing is a little hard to understand sometimes, some of her older texts replete with spelling and grammatical mistakes, I think that if you look past that and to the story, it's made up for.

The story is almost a cliche theme amongst EFC writers (particularly those with a fondness for Zo'or/Liam fic, of which I shamelessly count myself amongst). In the third series, Zo'or is revealed to be going through the Taelon reproductive time, and is finding it rather painful and slightly maddening. It's never mentioned again, but mostly it seems to have been taken to translate to the Taelon version of ponn farr by fans of the series.

"Liam, what do you think of Zo'or?" asked Da'an, just a few seconds after his young protector had entered his offce.

Liam turned around and finished to take off his coat, looking at Da'an strangly. "Well..." he started hesitantly, "I consider him as I consider any other Taelon that is firmly against the idea of an alliance with humanity. Why do you ask?"

Da'an looked thoughtful at his feet for a moment. Obviously he had not received the answer he had been hoping and waiting for. "Let me change my words then. Has your opinion of Zo'or... changed since the... incident?"

11:42 pm Fata Morgana by Julie Fortune (PG-13)
    Fandom: THE X-FILES
    Pairing: Mulder/Scully
    Length: novella
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] juliefortune
Author Website: Fanfic for the Fearless (way-backed)
    Why this must be read:

This story has so many twists and turns that it is difficult to categorize. I guess it is a relationship study embedded in a crime story that turns out to be (surprise!) an X-file. A very creepy X-file. She has written one of the most erotic scenes I have ever read, yet there is nothing overtly sexual about it. Julie Fortune is a former fan fiction writer turned pro fiction writer, who still dabbles in fan fiction from time to time. None of her work is archived at Gossamer, so if you like it, I'd just save it to your hard-drive.
