Why this must be read:   Because Jen (aka Psychgirl) is one of the new breed of TS writers that keeps this fandom alive and kicking.

I don’t like death stories. Correction: I don’t like tragic death stories. So, why am I recommending a story that has one of our guys dying tragically? Because if you envision the guys staying together for a lifetime, the likelihood is that one of them will die first. And, while it’s romantic to think that the other will pine away for lack of love, the reality is that a spouse often survives for years and must learn to continue without his soulmate. Psychgirl's story explores this path.

At a Cascade cemetery a 70-something Blair meets a 16-year-old girl who’s visiting her police officer father’s grave. Blair, being Blair, strikes up a conversation. Over time, through flashbacks, he takes her and us through the decades that he and Jim shared. There’s cases to be solved and love to be discovered. There’s anthropological rituals and career choices.   There’s desperation and resignation and fantastical journeys on the spirit plane. Of course there’s sadness, but mostly it’s a tale of two men who love and are deeply loved in return.

Although I love seeing our guys frozen in amber – young and feisty and cracking jokes – I also love stories that show us what lies years down the road. After time has slowed their steps a bit and given them some grey hair. I like to think that they will be together “for better or for worse”. This story covers that for me.

11:39 am never fight about money (never marry a youngest child) by Minervacat (rated R)
Fandom: BATTLESTAR GALACTICA 2003
Pairing: Kara/Zak; Kara/Helo; Kara/Lee; Kara/Sam
Length: 1,000 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] minervacat
Author website: when the floods roll back
Why this must be read:

This fic was written in 2006 following Lay Down Your Burdens 2 and should more properly be considered a character study. Couched within the four pairings listed, this story is all about Kara Thrace. It’s about her brokenness and about her strength and how both of these aspects of her personality feed on those closest to her. Kara’s relationship with each of these men fills a different need in her, beautifully illustrated in each vignette, yet through them all Kara is Kara.

01:00 pm Return of the Prodigal by Lakhesis (Adult)
 Fandom: HARRY POTTER
Pairing: Harry Potter/Severus Snape
Length: ~30,000 words
Author on LJ: [personal profile] moiraithanatoio
Author Website: MoonShadow Tribe
Why this must be read

Lakhesis is one of my favorite authors in any fandom, and I had trouble deciding which story of hers I should rec.  I love time travel fics, so I chose this one. Lakhesis writes wonderfully about the beginnings of a relationship between Severus and Harry, as well as the troubles Harry has with the Marauders. Like many others it has Harry going back to the time of his parents, but more realistically-- hes stuck there with no way home but to wait out the years, and when he finally returns not everyone is happy about it.

Severus seemed confused. "Why hadn't your Potions professor made sure you were competent before now?"

Harry couldn't help the wide grin on his face… Oh, this was a conversation he was writing down for the future, he thought, even if he never got the chance to taunt Snape with it.

"I don't know. He didn't like me much, slight grudge against my father."

Severus nodded in acknowledgement, even while his face showed dissatisfaction with the truth. "That is no excuse."

Harry's grin widened and he looked over at the young man who was fast becoming his best friend here. This was strange.

"Have you ever thought about teaching, Severus?"

04:36 pm The Eleventh Hour by azdak (G)
Sorry, I've been posting recs at awkward intervals this month as I've been traveling a lot lately and will be gone again tomorrow for the weekend. In case I don't have Internet access, here are my last fic recs for the Man from UNCLE this month.

Fandom: THE MAN FROM UNCLE
Pairing: none

Author's website: She posts her stuff in various places, but all of the major stuff can be found under this tag.
Why this must be read:

Some of the best stories are extraordinary in that they allow you to crawl inside a character's head and see their vision of the world, however warped - and not necessarily in a pathological way - that vision is. I remember reading that Robert Vaughn thought Napoleon was somewhat insane for all of his adrenaline junkie antics, and there a number of times during the series, particularly during season 1, where I have to agree. Like Stonehenge, there's nothing that seems to really be able to get Napoleon down despite the risky tactics and smart alec responses he often employs in the face of danger. To say that [livejournal.com profile] azdak captures this to a T is like saying that Tiger Woods is an extraordinary golf player; her illustration of pride going before a fall is one of the most gripping I've ever read. Not that she ignores Illya, either, or ignores the partnership dynamics; these are very much essential to the heart of the story. Napoleon's take on his relationship with his partner post-Gurnius coincides with a psychological adjustment to mid life, a gradual realization of his personal myth of invincibility that has kept him alive for as long as he has. If her evocative character sketches of our spy guys weren't enough of a draw, we get snippets of her delicious 1st person OC voice, too. This story was central in refining my own understanding of Napoleon; I hope it'll open your eyes, too.

05:04 pm Feed Me by Amethyst Hunter (G)
Fandom: THE MAN FROM UNCLE
Pairing: Napoleon/Illya
Author: [livejournal.com profile] amethyst_hunter
Why this must be read:

This may be one of my favorite slash stories ever. I still marvel at the exquisitely deceptive simplicity of the guys' banter every time I read it; Illya's careful evasions and Napoleon's shameless almost-flirtation with his partner and the humor are perfectly spot-on. I love how the author turns a simple canon quirk - Illya eats a lot - into a telling psychological (OK, shamelessly psychodynamic) fact that the quietly intuitive Napoleon picks up on. Sweet without being sentimental, this is a tour de force that shouldn't be missed.

05:31 pm Red Tape by Lydia Hunter (G)
Fandom: DOCTOR WHO
Pairing: None
Length: 330 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] dynapink
Author Website: Lydia Hunter's fics on Teaspoon
Why this must be read: This is so short that it's hard to say much about it without giving it away. The (Third) Doctor's answers to Benton's questions for his bureaucratic forms are perfectly reasonable, for him, just don't fit into the boxes. The ending, in particular, is the part that made me laugh out loud.

11:24 pm The Feather and the Chicken by derryderrydown (18)
Fandom: DC COMICS
Pairing: Roy Harper/Dick Grayson
Length: one-shot
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] derryderrydown
Author Website: Gildy Clobber
Why this must be read:

Because the Dick Grayson and Roy Harper pairing is made even more wonderful when the two men are portrayed in character. Also, it features kink, something that should always be in any truly excellent Dick Grayson fic. It features the kind of scene that makes you know more about the characters after it's complete than you ever did before.

"There was a kid in Utah," Dick said, cradling his morning coffee, "who found a metal washer in his Twinkie."

"Must have been one hell of a night if he didn't remember that," Roy said absently. Dick choked on his coffee and Roy looked up again. "Oh, you mean an actual Twinkie?"

"What did you think I meant?"

Roy shrugged. "That some kid had got drunk and woken up with a Prince Albert or something. I wondered why you were telling me."
