01:30 am Change Partners And Dance by Emrys (G)
Hi, everyone - I'm [livejournal.com profile] theladyrose and I'm back driving [livejournal.com profile] crack_van for Man from UNCLE again. I have to confess that I tend to rec more gen/ambiguously slashy pieces as I have great difficulty finding slash stories that haven't already been rec'd. I'm an omnivorous reader and try to rec a variety of stories - more established authors, new authors, slash, gen and everything in between.

Fandom: THE MAN FROM UNCLE
Pairing: gen
Author: Emrys (sorry, I don't know if she has a LJ)
Author Website: The Original File 40 site
Why this must be read: Girl from UNCLE is one of the shows where the characters come off much better in fanfic than they did onscreen. I know Mark Slate and April Dancer don't receive too much love from many MFU fans, particularly April as the concept behind her character was more promising initially on paper than in actual development. When they do appear, they're usually used at most as canonical backup support or in slash as supportive allies as Napoleon and Illya come out to HQ. It shouldn't come as a surprise, then, that I enjoy stories where we see this up and coming pair working with the established partnership of Napoleon and Illya. Emrys features a lot of great working chemistry between April and Napoleon that doesn't descend into April as Mary Sue; the author writes her as a resourceful agent who might be just as fun to work with as Napoleon. As much as I like our original MFU spy guy pair, it is nice to see how well the CEA works with April, as initially showcased in the GFU episode "The Mother Muffin Affair." She's no slouch in writing Mark, either - looks are definitely deceiving with this laid back Brit. Throw in some cool banter and a genuinely suspenseful rendition of the "Illya's a traitor! No, he can't be!" plotline (and damn, Emrys really puts the chill in the fanonical "Ice Prince") and you've got the best crossover MFU/GFU story that wasn't written by [livejournal.com profile] przed (whose wonderful stories sucked me into this fandom).

Not convinced yet? Here's a snippet of dialogue to whet your appetite.

02:06 pm The Rather Odd Couple by rosa_acicularis (Teen)
Fandom: DOCTOR WHO
Pairing: Duplicate Tenth Doctor/Rose Tyler
Length: 1,316 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] rosa_acicularis
Author Website: [livejournal.com profile] rosa_acicularis on Livejournal;
Account on A Teaspoon and an Open Mind
Why this must be read: The problem I've had with most post-"Journey's End" fics is how schmoopy and romance novel-y they are. *This story*, however, is exactly how I'd expect Ten II and Rose to go: all crack!fic and squeaky teddy bear and the Doctor's newly discovered human sex hormones and me wondering if the Tylers are going to have to stock up on hair gel.

Also, [livejournal.com profile] honorh's comment to this fic is right: Ten (in all forms) is an untrained puppy.

Hello all I am [profile] estel_angel , I will be your driver for Stargate Atlantis. It is an unexpected honor it going to hard to rrestrictmyself to just 12 recs. I will be recing a vast range of fics. My favourite Character is Rodney so the rec are likely to revol around him, there will be Gen, Slash even Het and OT4. The first rec is going to be an Rodney/Ronon fic one of the first i read of this pairing.

Fandom: STARGATE ATLANTIS
Pairing: RODNEY/RONON
Length: 5770 Words
Author on LJ: [personal profile] msgordo
Author Website: Team Spirit
Why this must be read:

A shortish but a lovely fic showing an season 2 Rodney and Ronon. It highlights how isolated Ronon is how unsure Ronon is of his place on Atlantis. Plus an excellent Mckay in fine snarky flow. Nothing explicit so even if slash is not you thing there is nothing to squick. Plus Carson gets a nice cameo.

*waves* I am [livejournal.com profile] sansets and I will be doing your small RPF fandom for this month. So sorry for the late start, but I will have plenty of Canadian Actor RPF for you, never fear!

Fandom: CANADIAN ACTOR RPF
Pairing: Hugh Dillon/Callum Keith Rennie
Length: 17,500 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] spuffyduds
Author Website: Fic Tag
Why this must be read:

In Canadian Actor RPF, Callum/Hugh during the filming of Hard Core Logo has almost become a genre unto itself. This is one of my favorite versions of that story for many reasons, not least of which is the awesome way in which Spuffy manages to respectfully incorporate Midori, but also for the way that the Headstones guys feature as a major part of the fabric.

G'day, I'm [livejournal.com profile] missyjack and I am behind the wheel of the Supernatural crack van this month - so watch out! I read across every genre of fic, so hopefully I'll be reccing something you like this month. And I am starting with possibly my favourite Supernatural story - The Last Outpost of All that Is.

Fandom: SUPERNATURAL
Pairing: Sam/Dean
Length: 61,700 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] eighth_horizon
Author Website: http://gekizetsu.net/
Why this must be read:

The world ends while they’re asleep.

So opens this brilliant story - Sam and Dean wake up one morning to find the world as they know it dramatically changed. They take off on a journey across the country to find answers: to what has happened , but also to who they are, and how they are to live, in this strange, devastated new world.

As an end-of-the-world tale should be, this one is epic in scope and its tale, and there is an unrelenting sense of tension and disquiet throughout. But it is also an incredibly intimate story.

For me its power is in its emotional resonance, how the theme of Sam and Dean's journey, whether to keep moving or settle, ties in with their emotional journey – both individually and together. They indeed both search their own inner landscape for answers, there are challenges and hazards on the way but eventually find their home in each other.

It’s also a story populated with the most wonderful details of day-to-day survival, which makes it all the more real and draws the reader in, on a "what would I do?" level. If the apocalypse does come a print-out of this story would be a useful survival tool!

The boys are canonically in character - and so is the whole tale, so it's filled with great humour and brotherly banter, tension and mystery, and angst. Most of all you will feel this story at your core.
