06:56 am White Board by Amal Nahurriyeh (R)
Fandom: THE X-FILES
Pairing: Mulder/Scully
Length: One-shot
Author on LJ: [personal profile] amalnahurriyeh
Author Website: N/A (this is the author's first fic)
Why this must be read:

I've said it before and I'll say it again. I am SO thrilled that the movie and the resurgence of this fandom have brought some exciting new writers to the forefront. This is [personal profile] amalnahurriyeh's first fic, but you'd never know it. It's written with a dry wit and features terrific characterization.

Like the story I previously recced, White Board deals with Mulder and Scully adjusting to their new domesticity in the Unremarkable House, but this story stands on its own. Anyone who has ever lived with another person, whether partner or roommate, will be able to appreciate the struggles our former FBI agents, both fiercely solitary people, go through.

Mulder, I'm not certain I trust you to ferment milk properly. )

02:14 pm The Photograph by daasgrrl (PG)
Fandom: HOUSE
Pairing: Wilson gen
Length: 1,615 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] daasgrrl
Author Website: dot's den, but it's out of date
Why this must be read: Most stories that talk about Wilson's brother (the one mentioned in Histories) portray him as a tragic figure, or a victim of circumstance or something. This story goes in a completely different direction, showing him as a man too angry and proud to have done anything but those actions that led him down that road. In a theme based on the Picture of Dorian Grey, the author contrasts that against Wilson, and the choices he's made throughout his life.

This story is beautifully written, with an original spin on both Wilson and his brother, and it's definitely worth a read.

02:31 pm In Essentials (Much As It Ever Was) by Vangie (G)
Fandom: PRIDE AND PREJUDICE
Pairing: Elizabeth/Darcy
Length: novel-length
Author on LJ: N/A
Author Website: Derbyshire Writer's Guild
Why this must be read:

This ‘what if’ story takes one of Miss Austen’s lines and cleverly twists it to fashion an entirely new scenario. In this parallel tale, when the Netherfield party meets the populace at the Meryton Assembly, not all of its members are strangers to one of the Bennet sisters. The story follows the same progression as the original novel, with slight but profound differences. Elizabeth is still impertinent and vivacious, but she’s also a little less sure of herself. Darcy is as inscrutable and smitten as ever. Prepare yourself for love! misunderstandings! heartache! mad carriage rides to London! events entirely out of order and inside out! and, finally, the happy dénouement.

07:53 pm The Consequences of Sherbert by bistokids (R)
Fandom: LIFE ON MARS
Pairing: Sam Tyler/Gene Hunt
Length: 2500 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] bistokids
Author Website: Ficlist on her journal.

Why this must be read:
What is not to like about this story? Who would have thought that the vision of sherbert smeared over his Guv's mouth would turn Sam Tyler on? A pretty shocking realisation for someone who always thought they were straight. But in the true fashion of slash stories everywhere, his outwardly homophobic Guv ends up wanting him as much as he apparently wants the Guv. It's hot, but it's also beautifully in character. A fun story.

08:13 pm Lewd by Despoena (NC-17)
Fandom: TOUR OF DUTY
Pairing: Lieutenant Myron Goldman/Sergeant Zeke Anderson
Length: 1754 words
Author on LJ: None
Author Website: Notes From the Underground

Why this must be read:

This is an “after the Vietnam War” fic, where it follows that Myron and Zeke stay together back in "the world."  Despoena has a wry wit and brings it to her stories.  She loves tweaking the “obvious” euphemisms often used in very bad romance novels and it makes her stories that much more hilarious because they're about two men who served in the Army in Vietnam, no less.

Fandom: HIKARU NO GO
Pairing: None
Length: one-shot
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] runiclore
Author Website: See the lj, or ff.net
Why this must be read:

I want to rec this short fic because it's one of the rare fics that deal with Sai being a ghost and what it is like, and also because it makes me want to cry for Sai ;____; This is a very touching and melancholic fic, and the interaction between Sai and Hikaru is simply lovely! I love how the fic captures how out of place Sai feels in modern Japan, how some things still haunt him, and how important go is to him.

09:46 pm "Crossed Frequencies" (G) by Millarific
Fandom: BATTLESTAR GALACTICA
Pairing: none (unless you count Gaeta's passionate hatred of Baltar)
Length: short
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] millarific
Author Website: Notes From the Underground

Why this must be read:

It's an epistolatory story (told all in people's letters to each other) like "Daddylonglegs" (except with spaceships) or "Clarissa" (except it doesn't suck and you don't want to bash the main character's head in). Short version: one of Gaeta's duties is to try and stop Baltar's pirate broadcasts, and Gaeta doesn't want to talk to Baltar, so he writes instead. And then Baltar stalks him by letter, and has his groupies stalk him in person, probably because he realises if he went himself, Lt. Butterfingers would find another pen. So Gaeta now has a new thing to write an annoyed letter about. And it's really, REALLY damn funny. Spoilers through "The Road Less Travelled".
