12:42 am Too Late The Shaman by Maaaaa (PG)
Fandom: THE SENTINEL
Pairing: none
Length: ~5k
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] maaaaa
Author Website: her slash fic and her gen fic on LJ
Why this must be read:

This was the first fic of [livejournal.com profile] maaaaa's that I read, and it's still one of my favorites; a wonderfully eerie piece that was written for the [livejournal.com profile] spook_me multi-fandom ficathon back in 2006. The use of present tense makes it seem like you're watching an old horror movie unfold, and the twist at the end will send shivers down your spine.

Fandom: DC COMICS
Pairing: Roy/Dick
Length: ~4500

Author Website: --
Why this must be read:

I fell in love with Roy Harper's character the minute I found out he was a young single-dad trying damn hard to do his job and take care of his little girl, Lian, who was born when he was probably 18-20 years old. In Amanda's story, Roy's frustration smokes out of the page when Lian asks for one thing: for her mother to be there on Christmas when she woke up.

Ow, ow, ow.

Someone wiser than I pointed out the difference between the Justice League and the Titans: the League is a group of people working; the Titans are family. This fic epitomizes that.

Fandom: THE X-FILES
Pairing: Mulder/Scully
Length: two-part vignette
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] megwriting
Author Website: Author's page on Gossamer
Why this must be read: Admittedly, Hurricane Ike swirling over east Texas and just a couple of counties away from me made me itch for a little "Agua Mala" fic. For background: "Agua Mala" was a season six episode of The X-Files in which Mulder and Scully end up trapped with a sea monster during a hurricane. As Marguerite points out in this story's disclaimer, there were some gaping holes in the story, and Marguerite set out to fill them.

It's an angsty one-shot that requires a working knowledge of Mulder and Scully's severely screwed-up relationship up through season six. From Mulder's POV, we get some frightening imagery and an echoing of angst-ridden season one 'ship - this is vintage Mulder and Scully, always misunderstanding and misinterpreting, and rarely ever talking it out. Marguerite is a classic XF writer, digging into Mulder's psyche and letting it all play out with just enough exposition and scene-setting.

Plus, post-hurricane, if you're like me and current events have an effect on your reading habits.

Fandom: DOCTOR WHO
Pairing: Harriet Jones/Rose Tyler
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] agapi42
Author Website: profile on Teaspoon

Why this must be read: This is just absolutely gorgeous: a possible snippet of time post-The Stolen Earth, frozen in an afterlife that may or may not be real. Harriet is beautifully drawn, and the story crackles with vivid description while also maintaining a dreamy, gauzy feel. For such a small bite of a story (just ~600 words) it's incredibly satisfying, and the last two lines are just dynamite.
