05:08 pm First Hour by Merryish (PG)
Hi, I'm [livejournal.com profile] brynnmck, and I'll be your SPN driver for October! Full disclosure: I signed up for this about a year and a half ago, and in the interim, my brain has sort of been eaten by another fandom and though I'm still watching SPN, I'm not reading much fic these days. However, in looking at some of the fics I have bookmarked, I still enjoy them as much now as I did when I first read them. And given how massively prolific this fandom is, and the short lifespan of posting/reccing on LJ, I thought it might be worthwhile to highlight a few fics from the not-so-distant past--hopefully you'll either get to enjoy something new to you, or rediscover an old favorite.

So. First up, we have...

Fandom: SUPERNATURAL
Pairing: none (gen)
Length: 1000 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] merryish
Author Website: Any Road
Why this must be read:

This was one of the first fics posted to [livejournal.com profile] spnflashfic, and it's possibly the most canonical-feeling Sam-leaves-for-Stanford fic I've ever read. Just absolutely dead-on voices for both boys, especially Dean, and not just their speech patterns, but the way they talk about things and around things and what they do when they can't say and how they sort of meet each other in the middle. And it's sweet and funny and poignant and touching and really amazingly awesome.

08:31 pm Night Eagle by Ysone (PG)
Hi! I'm [livejournal.com profile] captainlaura, and I'll be driving your Sentinel van this month. I've been reading stories in the fandom for years now, and I love a wide range of pairings and story types, so you can expect to see a lot of variety here.

Fandom: THE SENTINEL
Pairing: none
Length: 26,200 words (and the sequel is much longer)
Author on LJ: N/A
Author Website: Ysone's FanFic
Why this must be read:

Ysone was the very first Sentinel author I ever read (and I went through her entire library before moving on, so I definitely recommend all of her works), and this story was a great introduction to the many awesome AUs this fandom has created. This story manages to take many aspects of the show - the unexpected friendship, the mythology, the outsider's perspective - and apply it to America's "Old West". The first story, Night Eagle, focuses almost solely on Jim and Blair, but the sequel, Night Eagle: Homecoming, brings in the rest of the gang in style.

11:22 pm Veil of Shadows by viariskywalker (PG-13)
Fandom: STAR WARS
Pairing: Luke Skywalker/Mara Jade
Length: mid-length; spread over 13 chapters
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] viariskywalker
Author Website: none
Why this must be read:

This is a totally compelling and original AU in which ‘the good guys are bad, the Empire has won, and a Sith adept pursues the girl of his nightmares.’ The cited purpose of the fic was for the author to compose a love story in which the two main characters never touched and never said those three little words. [profile] viariskywalkersucceeds at precisely that, weaving us a gorgeous and haunting mystery that keeps the reader on the edge of their seat until the bitter end.
