10:16 am A Compleat History of Computers, According to Chris Skelton, by fiandyfic (PG-13)
Fandom: LIFE ON MARS
Author: [livejournal.com profile] fiandyfic
Authors' fic list: Fiandyfic's master fic list
Word count: 2,540
Pairing: Gen; Chris-centric (as the title would suggest)
Why this must be read: [livejournal.com profile] fiandyfic is a bit like the LoM fandom's GoBots of specialness. They write insanely disturbing and insanely crack-riddled fics with equal aplomb, and while both Fi and Andy are quite dangerous taken individually, they're even more dangerous when taken as a whole. Some say, if you feed their particular hutch of bunnies, you've only yourself to blame when those bunnies decide that meat is much tastier than boring old veg and they chase after you with such bloodlust that they make the one from the Holy Grail look cute and cuddly. All we know is, they're called [livejournal.com profile] fiandyfic.

Fandom: FIREFLY
Pairing: Mal/Kaylee, Jayne/OFC
Length: 7,209 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] miirica
Author Website: just the LJ
Why this must be read: One thing I love about Firefly is the richly textured background. There's all sorts of interesting people and societies which we get to see in tantalizing snippets in canon. Miirica does a lovely job in this story of creating a world and characters that fit right in with that tradition. She adds to that sharp, witty dialogue and great crew interactions, not to mention a strong streak of fun. And, perhaps most impressive of all, she presents Mal/Kaylee in a way that makes me buy it, which I normally wouldn't.

Length: 11,000 words

Why this must be read: This is another angsty, hurts-so-good classic, and I would say something more eloquent, but I'm once again in transit and brainfried. It's gorgeous. Go read.

Fandom: SUPERNATURAL

Length: ~14K words

Why this must be read:

This is another amazing story that came out of this year's [livejournal.com profile] spn_summergen challenge. It lays bare the hearts and needs and fears of all three Winchesters, and does so with the kind of razor sharpness that cuts deep and true.

When John hits his head and comes up with amnesia, Sam likes this new version of his father, and Dean just wants things to go back to what passes for normal in their family. Dean tries to keep things together the only way he knows how, and John wonders what kind of father he is, and what kind he'd like to be.

an excerpt )

Heartbreaking and evocative, full of palpable detail and emotion, with a really fantastic use of an omniscient narrator, and a clear-eyed understanding of the kinds of desperate cruelties people are willing to commit against the ones they love. Highly recommended. And if you enjoy it, please let the author know.

Why this must be read: GENIUS! Snarkyllama is well named. This is snarky, wonderful and kinda fluffy. It's one of my total comfort reads, and has enough brilliant lines that I find something new to giggle at every couple of paragraphs.

Fandom: STARSKY AND HUTCH

Author on LJ: Rae

Why this must be read:

This is the third long story I've had the privilege of reccing this month.

"All That Glitters" is labor of love. It's a case story and a look into Starsky’s past that makes for an excellent read.

My brain had to a few flexible moves to get a grip on some things in Starsky’s boyhood, but once there, it’s was a fine, fine trip.

Why this must be read:

Hopefully you'll like Gemma as much as I did. It was something that made this story that much more bittersweet.

And while I enjoyed this story for a lot of reasons, this atmospheric little bit stuck out in my mind. "Trees were waving to and fro like crazed stick monsters on a rampage. The sheep had all but disappeared, cowering in a huge sodden cotton ball mass inside a fenced enclosure." It's a bit of poetry, I think.

Yes, I'm a few days early with the vid rec, but I'm leaving town for the rest of the month early tomorrow. This rec also concludes my month here at Crack Van.

Why this vid kicks ass:

It’s a spot on love song for this fandom, and fandom in general. It's nice, so nice.

Why this must be read:Because Lance d'Arc? Oh my! Maggie's created the strangest, weirdest AU possibly ever. But it totally works. The language is so rich and evocative, and I had to read it three times in a row. I adore how remix can make something this different but still (imho) be a tribute to the original. Remixes often don't receive as much feedback as other stories - so change that people!

10:48 pm 3 Days and a Pizza by LA Koehler (PG-13)
Fandom: STAR TREK VOYAGER
Pairing: Janeway/Chakotay UST, Paris/Torres UST
Length: medium
Author on LJ: unknown
Author Website: LA's Voyager Fiction
Why this must be read: Post Threshold, Janeway and Paris are stuck for a couple of days in sickbay recovering. Tom desperately needs a pizza and his attempts are quite amusing, while Janeway gets in touch with a side of the crew she's missed for a while. Great dialogue and characterization, amusing highjinks, frivolous activities and some deep conversations.
