Fandom: STAR TREK VOYAGER
Pairing: Janeway/Chakotay
Length: short
Author on LJ: unknown

Why this must be read: Raw and intense snippet from the Year of Hell. Janeway goes to sickbay and despite the despair of their situation, finds a reason to smile.

“In that explosion, Chakotay, you were the first person I looked for.”

Fandom: STAR TREK VOYAGER
Pairing: Paris/Torres
Length: long
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] seperis
Author Website: Illuminated Text
Why this must be read: Tom and the Captain are kidnapped and tortured. While Tom lays dying in sickbay, B'Elanna and Seven search for a way to cure him, while the rest of the crew deals with other problems, and if the solutions include disobeying direct orders, Borg nanoprobes, mind links and the Prime Directive, so be it. Raw, gritty and intense, this story is a sequel to a fic already recced here and strongly recommended, In the Space of Seven Days, but can also be read as a stand alone.

01:14 pm Black Flag by inlovewithnight, rated PG
Fandom: BATTLESTAR GALACTICA 2003
Pairing: Helo, with mentions of Racetrack, HotDog, Apollo, and others.
Length: One-shot.
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] inlovewithnight
Author Website: http://inlovewithnight.livejournal.com/tag/fic_bsg
Why this must be read:
Because [livejournal.com profile] inlovewithnight cuts to the heart of The Great Matter of BSG, which is why Admiral Adama allowed Helo to go unpunished for some actions which caused a particularly offended section of fandom to go musth. Night gets these characters, and people. Also she loves Helo, but can still be mean to him.

Word did get out, running down the corridors of Galactica like snakes. Down to the flight deck, the pilots' bunks, the Marine rec, the enlisted crew showers. Bits and pieces of what really happened, turned inside out and cut apart, dyed dark and bleached light and changed with every repetition.

Frustrations built and bottled over too many months started burning slowly, building to a point that nothing inside the lines, or even something on the line like a Dance, was going to put it out.

Sometimes people just go mad, and something has to get hurt.

So two words ran back up the corridors again, crossing back and forth throughout the ship, and the flames crawled up ugly and bright.

Black flag, went the whispers. Black flag.

I am going to double post-today; I know it's not entirely kosher, but I owe more recs than life allowed me to get to. Thanks.

01:37 pm Five Times Sharon was Judged, and the One Time She Wasn't by technophobicgeek. G
Fandom: BATTLESTAR GALACTICA 2003
Pairing:Connor, Kat, Corporal Venner, William Adama, Romo Lampkin
Length: One-shot.
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] kindreds_fanfic
Author Website: http://www.bsgkindreds.com
Why this must be read:This fic is part of the Kindreds Five Times Project, in which different writers fic on a theme. Technophobicgeek hasn't written anything new in a long time, due to hand injuries, but his feel for the minor characters, and the understanding of Sharon as a thing, and as a person, are so elegant and insightful.

Cylon. Lampkin thought as the raptor launched into space, thanking the Gods that his glasses hid the double-take his eyes made. The one Cylon officer in the fleet had been assigned as his pilot. He wondered whose decision it was and why. Lampkin was not fazed by the hatred directed at him by, well, almost everyone in the fleet. He'd lived through years of it on Caprica. Perhaps they thought, they hoped that this Cylon would finish him off for them. Lampkin nearly laughed aloud at the idea. The Cylon was the only soldier he'd met so far who showed no animosity towards him. She didn't care who he was or who he was working for. She'd do her job and do it well, which meant that he was safer with her than any other pilot in the fleet. More likely, he realized, that her life was as expendable as his was. He could come up with a few jokes about the situation, he thought. 'A toaster and a lawyer walked into a bar...'

Fandom: The Magnificent Seven
Pairing: Gen, Buck, Ezra and the rest
Length: 172 k
Author on LJ: N/A
Author's website: M7 Fanfiction http://flah0.tripod.com/hfssite/
Why this must be read:
This is a wonderful OW fic set in the early days of the formation of the Seven. They are still getting a feel for working together and don't have the law enforcement mindset yet. Buck is falsely accused of murder to cover for someone else and Ezra is his only support in a difficult situation and in a different town. This has a more accurate depection of what happens to someone who almost gets hung rather than what was in the series. Very good friendship fic and the ending, where they get revenge on one of the culprits is very funny. This would have made a good episode.

04:42 pm Correspondence by Ankharet (PG)
Fandom: SWORDSPOINT
Pairing: implied only.
Length: circa 9K
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] rose_and_lizard  (fic)
Author Website: on LJ: a wonderful fic listing here.
Why this must be read:

Written for [livejournal.com profile] the_antichris  in Yuletide 2007, Ankharet’s Correspondence is set after The Privilege of the Sword, and is one of the very few stories in the fandom to discuss Katherine of Privilege at some length. It is a fully realised future history – a Riverside with juddering motor cars and fur coats, poised on the edges of modernity - in which Rose and Lizard’s teenage Charis and Samantha Campion read their way through the Duchess Katherine’s epistolary adventures, a history echoed and counter-pointed by their own. Correspondence is a joy to read, not just for the addition to canon, but for the author’s ability to conjure relationships and places both recognisable and seen anew.

It’s a lovely ending to a month of recs that have been a joy to rediscover.

Why this must be read: An original and interesting take about the future of Desmond, Penny and Daniel. The atmosphere is peaceful and mysterious at the same time, and the characterization is spot-on.

Summary: Years after escaping the Island, Desmond is in hiding with Penny when Daniel Faraday shows up at their door.

Here you go, my last rec of the month. I hope you enjoyed the ride as much as I did!

Fandom: RPF - FAKE NEWS

Length: 11,941 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] canis_takahari and [livejournal.com profile] mackem
Author Website: Their respective memories: canis_takahari's and mackem's.
Why this must be read:

When I'm in the mood for some fake news erotica, I look up one of the stories written by this pair. Although their work does not exclusively include kink, Take Me Away To Nowhere Plains is about a first-time D/s experience, and I haven't really been able to find another one-shot that can compare in that category. Enjoy!

Read on.

Pairing: Janeway/Chakotay, Paris/Torres
Length: 7,611 words
Author on LJ: unknown
Author Website: Mizvoy's Star Trek Fanfic
Why this must be read: Really cute story about, like the title says, things that go bump in the night. Paris and Torres' daughter keeps on getting woken up by bumps. They happen to share a wall with Chakotay's cabin...wonder what's going on over there? Paris absolutely has to know!

08:18 pm Voyager Virtual Season Project by various (PG)
I hope you've enjoyed the Voyager recs, I had a lot of fun doing them. Didn't get in as much Doctor/Seven as I wanted, but that'll have to wait until the next time my turn comes up on the small fandom list!

If you're in need of a Voyager fic kick, I recommend trekiverse.org, they have a lot of stuff there, and of course, check out the previous Voyager recs in the memories section! If a link is dead, try archive.org, works like a charm most of the time. I would like to just mention the following few fics, since they were recced before they didn't deserve their own entry, but really, they're too awesome:
Revisionist History by Penny Proctor and
Quid Pro Quo by Jamelia ( alt link) - Paris/Torres/Tuvok and thus obviously Pon farr. Nuff said.

Also, don't forget about the official Voyager novels. They're quite enjoyable! And a special extra that didn't quite qualify for Fanvid rec day: The Frasier and Voyager crossover. MY GOD THIS IS THE FUNNIEST THING EVER. If you haven't seen both shows though, then maybe just funny, not the funniest thing ever.

So this is the last rec for the month. Last, but not least, it's a big one.

Fandom: STAR TREK VOYAGER
Pairing: Janeway/Chakotay, Paris/Torres, Tuvok/T'Pel, Kim/Seven
Length: series
Author on LJ: unknown
Author Website: n/a
Why this must be read: Two full virtual seasons of Voyager. I haven't read everything yet, but from what I have read so far, they're well written and interesting and full of plot. It starts right after Endgame, and what's nice is that this is NOT part of the Voyager-gets-home genre, even though they do get home eventually. There are new enemies, Section 31 even gets to show up, and new missions. There's a good 40+ episodes, so you'll have a lot of reading. I wish I had found this site years ago, darnit. Enjoy!!

09:42 pm Poison and Deliverance by Lieutenant Dan (PG-13)
Sorry - thought this posted yesterday but somehow it didn't go through.

Fandom:
STAR TREK: DEEP SPACE NINE
Pairing: None
Length: 4500 words
Author on LJ: none that I know
Author Website: LieutenantDan on Fanfiction.net
Why this must be read:

Kira Nerys had an amazing story arc. She grew from angry terrorist/resistance fighter (depending on your definition) into someone who could both find the moral high ground and hold it in the face.

"Poison and Deliverance" follows Kira, before and after the Resistance, doing what she has to do and how her definition of that evolves over time. Lieutenant Dan's terse, economical prose really captures the immediacy of Kira's tension between morality and necessary evils.

10:04 pm Bizarre Love Triangle by Twistedlyn (NC-17)
Fandom: SMALLVILLE

Length: series of seven one-shots, about 20k words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] twistedlyn
Author Website: http://two-of-us.svtometropolis.com/viewuser.php?uid=25
Why this must be read: It's crack fic in the very best sense. Sexy, hilarious, and with tongue-firmly in cheek, [livejournal.com profile] twistedlyn aka Firebunny has taken a rarely seen OT3 and turned it not only into a running commentary of the many plotholes and nonsense twists of canonical Smallville but also a rollicking romp between Chloe Sullivan and her boys. Also, it's been a great source of information on all those important holidays like Perihelion or Teddy Bear Picnic Day.

Why this must be read:

Thanks for tuning in to DS9 this month -- I hope you've found something worth reading.

At the risk of making a PSA, there's plenty of great DS9 fic still out there waiting for you. I had a hard time choosing the last story but decided to end the month back at the beginning, with another recent story in a fandom that's still alive and kicking.

"Standardized" consists of five snapshots of Julian Bashir's life. In just a few words and scenes, babel examines the ways in which Bashir's evolution from struggling preschooler to genetically enhanced genius only intensified his sense of failure and alienation. There's not a word wasted in this incisive portrait of a man and his teddy bear.

Everyone looks so disappointed, and they won't tell you why. )

10:10 pm Fandom Overview: American Idolslash (Season 7)
Introduction

Hi, everyone. To the world of fanfiction, I am Aphrodite.  For nearly a decade, I've been writing boyband slash, specifically 'Nsynclash.I write predominantly angst driven slash with a dash of erotica with all the kinks and fetishes.  My muse then was the almighty Justin Timberlake. Then life got in the way of writing and I took an extended sabbatical from fanfiction.  And now I'm back and bringing forth a little fandom to share.

Welcome to the world of American Idolslash. Allow me to be your tour guide as I introduce you all to the fandom that reignited my passion for writing.   A spinoff of the traditional boyband slash, American Idolslash engages the reader in a world of love, angst, and/or kinky sex among two or more Idols. With this current past season, slash has never been so much fun.

Ready, girls? Good. Okay. Be prepared to enter the wonderful world of American Idolslash.

Why this must be read: AUs can be tricky to do. Sometimes they get to the point where the characters are no longer recognizable except by name, but [livejournal.com profile] simplytoopretty avoids this trap by bringing us a Kal El (Clark) who still has the same fears and insecurities and struggles with his alien nature, even if he wasn't raised by the Kents.
