Fandom: CHRONO CRUSADE
Pairing: Rosette/Chrono
Length: 2,727 words

Why this must be read: One of the most common story-types in this fandom (next to "Rosette and Chrono DON'T DIE DAMMIT!" stories) are "missing scene" stories taking place during, just before, or just after the epilog. Sacred is an "epilog" fic set in the manga-verse, taking place shortly after Rosette and Chrono are reunited. This is mostly a hurt/comfort sort of story, as Chrono and Rosette talk, and Rosette fusses over Chrono's injuries, and Chrono fusses over Rosette. The characterization is excellent, and the hurt to comfort ratio is just about perfect.

Fandom: Hot Fuzz Pairing: gen Length: 2950 words Author on LJ: annlarimerAuthor Website: none Why this must be read: I must confess to having never heard of Ann Larimer, despite her apparent legendary status in all of fandom, before I started reading Hot Fuzz fanfic. I am glad of this because it allowed me the perspective of encountering her amazing stories with fresh eyes and no preconceived notions. In fact, I was a little disappointed to find her so popular already. I wanted to keep her my secret. Why should you read this story? Because it will blow your mind into tiny, tiny pieces with its characterization of Danny Butterman as he struggles with events during and following the movie. Because for all her ability to eke hilarity out of any situation, Ann approaches the events of Danny's life, his relationship with his father, and his friendship with Nicholas with subtlety that gets under your skin and kind of lives there for a while. Because it is superbly written. Because the ending, may make you tear up a little. And because she manages to do all of this without falling into that fandom trap of "bleakness is a virtue" when dealing with serious subject matter. As you may have guessed by now, this month's recs will be heavily Chad/Ryan, both because they're my OTP and because we have some amazing writers in this fandom. The first round of the swingathon Chad/Ryan fic exchange took place this summer, and it generated a month's worth of pretty great fic, including today's rec. Fandom: HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL Pairing: Chad/Ryan Length: 10,288 words Author on LJ: fools_gameAuthor Website: Fic ListWhy this must be read: fools_game has written a grand total of two HSM fics, and both of them are incredible. I'm reccing this one today because it's a wonderfully honest look at high school dynamics, even at a high school as Disneyfied as East High. There are underaged drinking, random hooking up, and shenanigans in this story - just like in high school - but the characters still feel like the ones we know from the films. There's a Ryan who is likable and vulnerable, a Chad who is coming to terms with himself, and a cast of Wildcats who (while not getting that much page-time) feel more fully realized than they have in three whole movies. The ending doesn't tie up with a neat bow, but I was completely satisfied with it. This is a excellent story that stands on its own, without relying on our usual fandom cliches (though the cliches can be great when done well). And because it's been posted only in the swingathon comm, it may have been overlooked by some fans. Whether you're wise in the ways of Chad/Ryan or brand new, I highly recommend this story. Fandom: TOY SOLDIERS Pairing: Billy Tepper/Joey Trotta Length: 2000 words Author on LJ: leliseWhy this must be read: This is one of only two pieces of fiction that lelise ever wrote in TS fandom, but, to this day, I consider it one of the best we have. In a little over two thousand words, she manages to capture a sequence of seemingly random moments that, when taken together, add up to a poignant and stunningly accurate portrayal of the Billy/Joey relationship. For all that the rating is only PG-13, the sex scene is surprisingly vivid. There's something to be said for choosing sensual language over the crudely graphic, which you wouldn't immediately assume to be effective in the case of a couple of teenage guys! (As Things Are)

Fandom: PROS Pairing: Bodie/Doyle Length: 8,200~ Author on LJ: halotolerantAuthor Website: Halotolerant at The Circuit ArchiveWhy this must be read: Because it hits every one of my kinks: 1)Tight Bodie POV. Here we get to see the chink in his armour (Doyle) becoming ‘essential’, whether Bodie knows it or not. 2) Forced flat-sharing ( be still my Curtain Fic heart) thanks to a CI5 cock-up. And 3) Flashbacks to Bodie’s days as a mercenary in Africa. All weaved into an exquisitely observed first-time story. Sometimes, reeling out of some stake-out at three in the morning, or finishing a siege at ten, Bodie just wanted to clout Ray round the ear, because, fuckssake, you bring right and wrong into all of that, you're going to break.
Or maybe, Ray wouldn't?
Before he'd met Ray, he'd always assumed the man -- this policeman, this law-keeper -- would be weaker than him. And initially he'd seen what he thought was evidence of this -- guilt, health-food, cooking, high-maintenance hair and a tendency to ask birds how they felt.
But if Ray thought what he was doing was right -- never mind when he thought he was wrong and what an arse that was -- then he'd kill in a way Bodie couldn't imagine, because then his strength came from something more than self-preservation.
Bodie had swiftly found Ray fascinating. Like Gravity

Hi everyone! This month I'm taking you on a magical mystery tour to the fair castle of Camelot, hot on the trail of the hottest new fandom around, Merlin. Merlin is the newest, gayest incarnation of the Arthurian Cycle (and that's saying something, as the medieval versions are pretty darn gay, with all those "jousting" knights, thrusting swords, and long, long quests with nary a woman to be seen). The first season is just about to finish its run of thirteen episodes on the BBC. It's made for a general audience (think kids adventure show), so it's one of those fandoms you can share with anyone, from non-fans to friendshippers, to full-on slashers and het shippers. Fandom: BEING HUMAN Pairing: George/Mitchell Length: Five part series Author on LJ: entangled_now, fic journal is libraryofsolAuthor Website: libraryofsolWhy this must be read: This is a fun series that starts pre-relationship and builds up to the relationship. Each part alternates between George and Mitchell as the narrator. The focus of each part is on one of the five senses and it's effect on the narrator. It's a fun series with a lot of humor and a bit of angst. ( excerpt from Senses: Smell )Senses: Smell or The Senses series
